3 Alateen is part of Al-Anon Family Groups. a fellowship of young people whose lives have been affected by alcoholism in a family member or close friend. (from the Alateen Suggested Preamble) Alateen is not A program for young people seeking sobriety. 3

4 Alateen Includes Alateen members Area-certified Al-Anon Members Involved in Alateen Service (AMIAS) Alateen Group Meetings Resources to Alateen: Supportive Al-Anon groups & members Supportive local service arms (district/ais) 4

5 Alateen Members Are members of Al-Anon Family Groups who are seeking recovery from the effects of someone else s drinking. Share their experience, strength, and hope with each other. May include younger members 5

6 Alateen Motion Requires Areas to set safety and behavioral requirements for all Alateens and all Al-Anon Members Involved in Alateen Service. These requirements apply to all use of the Al-Anon or Alateen name in conjunction with any meetings, groups, conventions, or any other gatherings in the Area where Alateen participation is offered. 6

7 Al-Anon Member Involved in Alateen Service Is an Al-Anon member who is directly responsible for Alateens while being of service to Alateen. Each Area clearly defines what roles that involves. Instant or backup Alateen Group Sponsors must have completed certification through the Area process. 7

8 Alateen Safety and Behavioral Requirements Minimum Requirements were set by the 2003 Alateen Motion. Alateen meetings, groups, events, and Al- Anon Members Involved in Alateen Service must comply with the Area Requirements. 8

9 Minimum Safety and Behavioral Requirements (from WSO) 1. Every Al-Anon member involved in Alateen Service must: - be an Al-Anon member regularly attending Al-Anon meetings - be at least 21 years old. - have at least 2 years in Al-Anon in addition to any time spent in Alateen. 9

10 Minimum Safety and Behavioral Requirements (from WSO) - not have been convicted of a felony, and not have been charged with child abuse or any other inappropriate sexual behavior, and not have demonstrated emotional problems which could result in harm to Alateen members. 10

11 Minimum Safety and Behavioral Requirements (from WSO) 2. There must be at least one Alateen Group Sponsor at every Alateen meeting. WSO Says the Area Requirements: 3. must prohibit overt or covert sexual interaction between any adult and Alateen member. 11

18 Training for AMIAS (Passed at October, 2013 Assembly) NEW: Agree to participate in training offered by AFG Florida South and / or District which will give the AMIAS the tools to be an AMIAS and take steps to ensure the safety of Alateens and the AMIAS. Note: training data is kept at the District / AIS level. NEW: Per the October, 2013 Assembly vote: Complete Alateen Training every 3 years. Newly certified AMIAS must complete training no later than 30 days after being certified by WSO. 18

19 Training for AMIAS (Passed at October, 2013 Assembly) Failure to complete training will result in deactivation of the AMIAS. (No longer allowed to sponsor or work with Alateens) 19

New Legal Requirements in Florida 2012 Florida Statutes require any person who learns of alleged abuse, neglect or abandonment of a child to report it.

Al-Anon Guideline G-34 suggests you should announce at every Alateen meeting or make it part of your opening that the sponsor is legally required to report alleged abuse/ neglect. 21

22 Don t Put Yourself at Risk Abuse / sexual harassment is often a matter of perception. Don t put yourself in a situation where your actions could be misinterpreted. Be careful with hugging, touching, language, and your appearance. Don t be alone with an Alateen. Always have another sponsor / adult present. 22

23 What is Abuse? In Florida, Child Abuse is defined as: Any willful or threatened act that results in any physical, mental, or sexual injury or harm that causes or is likely to cause the child s physical, mental or emotional health to be significantly impaired Source: 23

26 Reporting Abuse To report a complaint or allegation of abuse, call the Florida hotline at ABUSE ( ) You should make the report as an individual, not as a member of Alateen. You can report anonymously, but to find out any action taken, you would have to give your name. 26

30 Starting an Alateen Group Follow the Area Process for certification of Alateen Group Sponsors and meeting registration. Work with Area / District/ the Area Alateen Coordinator, or your local Alateen Chairperson and the AAPP. Set meeting place/time. Al-Anon group support is helpful. Alateen meetings are closed, attended by Alateens and the Area-certified Alateen Group Sponsors (AMIAS) only. 30

31 The New Alateen Meeting The first meeting will be exciting for all concerned. Ask the group to set its own behavioral guidelines. Remind them they are responsible for their group. Remember it s the Alateens meeting! 31
