1 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER 2017 Musings by Heather When I think of May, one of the first thing that comes to mind is graduation. If you are anything like us, the month is packed full with high school and college graduation ceremonies, parties, food and punch. Heather Rozeboom Event Coordinator This year, I have one more graduation ceremony to add to my list. I will be graduating from Leadership Sioux Center on May 10. This program put me out of my comfort zone a bit and taught me much more than I thought possible about Sioux Center and myself. Working at the Chamber I thought I knew quite a bit about our community and the leaders in it, but I quickly discovered I was wrong. At the first session in October, we were introduced to the other 19 peers in our class, all of us from different jobs and backgrounds. Before we even got to know each other, we were thrown into a leadership challenge that required half of us to be blind folded and the other half to direct the blind through a mine field. We soon realized what each other s strengths and weaknesses were and it broke the so-called ice. Now as we near our last session, I m confident to say that there are 20 new friendships and many more professional contacts that have been made because of this program. Along with learning more about ourselves, we learned much more about our community. Everything from Land Development and Joint-Use to Healthcare and Diversity. Many different tours were taken to Dykstra Dairy, Sioux County Jail, Smithfield Foods, Family Crisis Centers and the State Capitol just to name a few. We were reminded again and again that Sioux Center is a wonderful place to live and work. I hope you can attend the Leadership Sioux Center Graduation Ceremony on May 10 at noon to learn more about the program and hear more details of our year from some of my peers. You just might be surprised what you will learn! Do you still have a lot of UnFinished Objects laying around the house? Come finish them without the other home distractions. Work on your PHD (Projects Half Done) while enjoying a beverage and some adult conversation. Join us at 7:00pm and bring your knitting, journaling, coloring, ANYTHING! No registration is required The Sioux Center Library is excited to offer a Family Lego and STEM Activity Night on Tuesday, May 9 from 6:30-8:30pm. Activities will be available for everyone and include: marble mazes, coding, felting, lego challenges, and marshmallow building! We will be using some of the goodies we were awarded through a STEM grant. Everyone is invited to come, play, and learn! No registration is required. The Sioux Center Library is gearing up for summer! Registration for the summer library programs opens on May 15. You can register through our website at or by calling the library at ! Sunday the Therapy Dog will once again be at the Sioux Center Public Library on Wednesday, May 24. You can sign your child up for a 15 minute time slot through our website or by calling the library at This is a great program for your child to participate in if they need extra practice reading or to take off some pressure of reading in front of others! How to Building Center The How to Building Center is hosting Sarah Davelaar, a naturalist from the Sioux County Conservation Board on Saturday morning, May 13. Sarah will be doing seminars that morning on successful bird feeding techniques, and getting birds to attach themselves to a specific area, like back yards, and other special areas. She will be doing two sessions that morning, at 10 am, and 11 am. 13 Roelofs Store After 41 years of working and enjoying being the owner of Roelofs Store, I have decided to retire! This experience has been filled with happy times, much enjoyment, and getting to work with and meet interesting and creative people. If anyone is interested in continuing the store, the business is for sale. For more information call (712) or (712) and ask for Dixie. Mike Popovich, a native of Sioux Center, is one of the co-founders of Trunited and on a visit back to his home town, along with one of the other founders, had the opportunity to see the Vi Bella jewelry collection and to meet with Julie and Kirk Hulstein. Hearing the story behind the beautifully crafted jewelry, and the beautiful lives created for the artisans, made for a great partnership for both Trunited and Vi Bella.
