5 Recipes for Success (Goals for Residence Hall Association) Recipe: Restructure Committees Ingredients for Success: Ben lead efforts to examine and restructure our RHA committees to make sure they were best serving our residents. Ben has also worked to make sure every committee has a clear vision and purpose and are aligned with the RHA motto of Voice. Community. Change. Recipe: Increase General Assembly Meeting Participation Ingredients for Success: Ben has made our weekly General Assembly meetings a place for new and returning leaders to grow and learn new skills. Ben often seeks new members to make motions to adjourn our meetings and speak on behalf of their halls. He has also taken time to explain Parliamentary Procedure throughout our meeting to make sure everyone is on the same page. Recipe: Develop & Implement Assessment of RHA Programs/Initiatives Ingredients for Success: One initiative that Ben has pushed for and developed has been assessing RHA programs and initiatives. One way that he has made sure this is done has been by creating exit surveys for programs. These exit surveys have allowed us to improve our efforts and keep track of what residents are looking for. Recipe: Get Feedback from Residents about What They Need on Campus Ingredients for Success: Ben has lead town hall discussion in General Assembly meetings to hear what residents are concerned about and would like changed in their communities. RHA has continued and improve the way it searches for resident feedback. Ben also emphasized that Community Councils seek feedback from their residents. 5

6 Comfort Food (Goals for RHA Executive Board) Recipe: Improve Accountability of RHA Board Ingredients for Success: Accountability is often a challenge for teams working together. The NIU RHA Board has had its fair share of challenges. Ben has worked to keep the executive board accountable by leading by example and finding how each board member needs reminders. Ben has implemented skills that he has learned in his teaching courses to hold the board to deadlines that have been set. He makes sure to get feedback before setting deadlines. When board members do not meet deadlines, he makes sure to find a solution. When hard conversations need to take place, he handles them professionally. Recipe: Strengthen Relationship Between RHA Board Members Ingredients for Success: When Ben became president, he noticed that the RHA Board primarily just had a working relationship. Je recognized that in order for the team to be successful, they needed to have more positive personal relationships as well as their work relationship. He has worked to make the board much more team oriented in its work as well as finding time in everyone's schedules to bond as a group. Ben loves to cook and has prepared multiple meals for his board as a way for them to come together. 6
