2 V I E W P O I N T The President's Corner providing mentoring programs for young men. We have a few new programs to offer in the school year. CBMLA will now be responsible for implementing the CARES Program in four charter schools. CBMLA will pilot a new program called the Emerging Leaders Program. The original Welcome to Manhood Program will be offered as usual. MARK ANDERSON, PRESIDENT HELLO MEMBERS AND MENTORS It s been a fun summer! Our final summer event will be the 2nd Annual Awards Banquet on Friday August 19, 2016 at 6:30 PM at the Double Tree by Hilton in Carson, CA. It is my hope, that everyone receiving the August Newsletter plans to attend this terrific event. As we round out the month of August and head into September, it s back to our core function; DID YOU KNOW? This year's theme for the 2016 Awards Banquet: Empowering Our Youth Today: For a Stronger Tomorrow AUG 2016
3 V I E W P O I N T The CARES Program is part of a comprehensive outreach project designed to improve academic and life outcomes for middle school students. As a part of this program, Facilitators lead weekly workshops with mentees at their schools during school hours. Through this program, mentees develop life skills, stronger school attachment, and improve citizenship. The four charter schools are: KIPP Academy of Opportunity, KIPP Scholar Academy, Animo Western and Animo Phillis Wheatley. The CARES Program starts the first week of September and will include approximately 60 mentees. The Emerging Leaders Program will take place at the Hyde Park Library on Saturdays starting Saturday, September 24th. This program will replace the Welcome to Manhood Program previously offered at this library. The Emerging Leaders Program is a very structured mentoring program focused on mentees starting 9th Grade or higher. The program focuses on four core areas; Personal Identity, College Access, Career Readiness and Financial Literacy. An application is available on our website at and is required for enrollment. The Welcome to Manhood Program will be offered at the Exposition Park Library starting Saturday September 10th. The Welcome to Manhood Program will be offered at the Eastside Academy Transitional Learning Center in Lancaster, CA starting Saturday September 17th. Mentees ages years old can participate in the Welcome to Manhood Program. All three programs are explained in detail on our website under Programs. I am extremely pleased to see CBMLA increase our effectiveness through mentoring young men in schools and offering a structured program to assist high school students with preparing for college. Birdsong was appointed to the Superior Court of Los Angeles on June 18, He received his JD degree in 1994 from Vanderbilt University School of Law. Birdsong is a alumni of Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. From 1995 to his appointment to the Superior Court of Los Angeles, Birdsong practiced with McNeill & Wyatt, the largest owned African American law firm in Los Angeles
