3 Our Mission The YWCA Metropolitan Chicago is committed to providing women with the support and tools needed to transform their lives, be confident in their choices and make valuable contributions to their communities. We promote racial justice, embrace diversity and inspire personal development both within our organization and throughout all our services. Our Vision Our vision is to eliminate racism and empower women. About YWCA Metropolitan Chicago The YWCA is the oldest and largest multicultural women s organization in the world. Across the globe, we have more than 25 million members in 122 countries, including 2 million members in 300 local associations in the United States. At the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, our mission is to eliminate racism and empower women through a breadth of programs and services. We provide safe places for women and girls, build strong women leaders and advocate for women s rights and civil rights in Congress. Through our three core program areas: sexual violence and support services, economic empowerment services and child care and provider services, the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago has served more than 160,000 women, children and families. With more than 200 employees working at 12 locations throughout metropolitan Chicago, our staff and volunteers are dedicated to promoting racial justice and personal empowerment through everything we do.

4 A Message from the Chief Executive Officer As I write this, my first year at the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago has just come to a close. Like a diligent student, during the past twelve months, I ve asked a lot of questions, listened to the concerns of our staff and constituents and learned about the complex structure of our organization. I met with our primary donors and with our peer agencies, and I observed an everchanging political climate and its impact on the state and federal funding upon which we rely. And my homework isn t done, yet. Through the course of my study, several issues have emerged: ISSUE Changing Communities: Gentrifying communities and the Chicago Housing Authority Transformation project have dispersed the low-income population traditionally served by the YWCA, making it more challenging to reach those who need our help. Action: We are evaluating where and how our services are delivered in the context of gentrifying neighborhoods and the city s plan for new mixed income communities. The outcome of our research will be a concept for the Model YWCA, which will include a plan for adjusting our service delivery model to meet these new standards. ISSUE Program Impact: Most of the women we serve live at or below the federal poverty level. Given our geographic reach and our core competencies, we need to do more to increase the measurable impact we have on improving the lives of the women and families we help. Action: We are planning to expand our economic empowerment programs commencing in Fall 2006 so the women who currently access our child care or sexual violence and support services may also use the YWCA as a resource towards gaining financial self-sufficiency. ISSUE Declining Government Funding: Escalating pressure on our nation s budget caused by the war in Iraq and a stream of natural disasters around the world threaten to further reduce our federal and state funding. Action: We have implemented an aggressive capacity building plan to increase our success in obtaining private funding from corporations, individuals and foundations. ISSUE Legislative Advocacy: Changes in the composition of the Supreme Court and current federal government policy have created an environment in which strong women s organizations must combine forces to protect the rights of women and their families. Action: We are collaborating with all Illinois YWCA s to develop a statewide advocacy agenda and concurrently, working with public strategists to develop a complimentary advocacy agenda for the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago. Plans to aggressively advance these agendas are in place and will be implemented beginning with the Illinois Legislative session in Spring The YWCA Metropolitan Chicago faces many challenges, but fortunately, we have a strong staff who bring expertise and dedication to their work here. Their efforts are augmented by tremendous volunteers who work tirelessly to provide the leadership, funding and visibility so critical to our success. To all of them, and to our many generous donors, thank you for your ongoing devotion to our mission. I have high hopes for the future of our YWCA and I know that, with your continued support, we can empower more women of every race and ethnicity to live happy, healthy and productive lives. 6 Major Corporate Sponsors Blue Cross Blue Shield: Eighty-four percent of Blue Cross Blue Shield s sponsorship supported the diversity of programs and services the YWCA offers to women, children and their families in the Chicago metropolitan community. These programs include sexual violence services, economic empowerment, and childcare and provider services. LaSalle Bank, Marsh USA, Inc, Corn Products International: Event Sponsorships LaSalle Bank, Marsh USA, Inc, and Corn Products are major contributors to the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago s Leader Luncheon. Leader Luncheon is the YWCA s largest fundraiser recognizing outstanding women. In 2005, Leader Luncheon raised more than $780,000 to support YWCA programs. HSBC-North America: HSBC supported the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago with a 2-year grant benefiting the YWCA s Financial Literacy Seminars in conjunction with Money Smart Week. Their donation also provided a public relations campaign to more than 100,000 homes, focusing on the economic empowerment of women and girls. Harris Bank: Harris Bank supported services to the Woodlawn and Englewood communities, where more than 40% of families live below the poverty level. Because of Harris Bank s continued support, the Harriet M. Harris Center has been a trusted resource on Chicago s South Side for services including: child care and provider services, sexual violence and support services and economic and empowerment services. PepsiCo: Quaker PepsiCo supported the YWCA s Violence Prevention Education program in Quaker s adopted inner city schools. In Wells Community Academy High School, the YWCA conducts art therapy programs for boys and girls who are victims of violence. Art therapy serves as a form of expression for the difficult emotions and issues that result from experiencing violence.

7 Our Impact The YWCA Uptown Center continued to expand and now offers specialized sexual violence and support services for the LGBT community, domestic violence services for members of the Korean American Community and sexual violence counseling and prevention programs for children. A team of YWCA employees and volunteers from the West Suburban Center traveled to Nitra, Slovakia in April to participate in a conference on child abuse. Employees spoke on rape crisis and domestic violence. Thirty parents and staff traveled to Springfield, Illinois on May 4, 2005 to urge legislators to maintain the Child Care Assistance Program funding at the current levels. They also urged legislators to increase the Early Childhood Block Grant funding by the additional $30 million in the Governor s budget. When compared to 840,000 preschool children in the U.S.A. on a national test focusing on spoken English comprehension, vocabulary, letter recognition and early mathematics, the children at the Harris, King and Northside Child Development Centers scored above the national average in six skill areas and at the national average in two skill areas. Future Leaders, a YWCA youth program, wrote and performed the play, Ride With Dignity, in February 2005 as a tribute to Ms. Rosa Parks, depicting her defiant act of refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger. Four Young Parent Program teens are part of the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health delegation that is scheduled to travel to Washington, D.C. to lobby for affordable teen housing. As members of the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault, YWCA advocates worked for the passage of legislation that strengthens protections for communities and sexual assault survivors from known sex offenders. The YWCA launched the Clinical Training Institute, which offers skill-strengthening seminars and trainings to professionals encountering survivors of sexual assault.
