2 Highlights This has been a phenomenal year for Mary s Center, with impressive growth and national and regional recognition for the impact that our entire team, including our Board of Directors, has on our programs. Our staff and Board members are truly visionary leaders. AWARDS New Site in Montgomery County In 2018 we opened a new center in Montgomery County replacing our existing site in Silver Spring, which is beyond capacity. The new site, located at 344 University Blvd. West in Silver Spring, has tripled the space allowing us to serve over 12,000 Maryland residents this coming year. MAT Program Helps More Patients in Opioid Recovery We are saving more lives through our Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program, which combines behavioral health services along with providing Suboxone a medication that suppresses opioid withdrawal symptoms and helps reduce craving. Sadly, the program doubled its enrollment to 353 people in the last year, but we are extremely proud to be able to serve everyone that needs the program and 2018 Health Center Quality Leader Award from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services For being one of the top health centers in the country achieving the best overall clinical quality measures among the nearly 1,400 community health centers across the entire United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Pacific Basin Community Cornerstones Award, from DC s At-Large Councilmember Anita Bonds For making an indelible impact on the District of Columbia. NIH AND URBAN INSTITUTE ASSESS OUR SOCIAL CHANGE MODEL 2018 Henry Schein Cares Gold Medal in the Oral Health Category For demonstrating excellence in expanding access to oral care for the underserved. 75 Most Influential Alumni Honor, from the University of California at Berkeley School of Public Health For the contributions and achievements of our President and CEO, Maria Gomez, that serve as a source of inspiration to the public health community. In commemoration of our 30th anniversary, Mary s Center partnered with the Urban Institute and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct an extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluation of our Social Change Model. The results of this comprehensive study will reveal how collaboration and integration of medical care, education, social services and workforce development, impact the health and well-being of our participants. 3 FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND CEO Dear Friends, Mary s Center has been transformed since we opened our doors 30 years ago. We ve gone from 10 pioneering employees serving 200 participants in a basement in Adams Morgan in Washington DC, to more than 600 employees serving nearly 50,000 participants at eight locations in the District of Columbia and Maryland. Our offerings have also expanded to a wide array of services, from behavioral health and dental care to HIV prevention and treatment, primary care, and workforce development programs in partnership with Briya Public Charter School. But our commitment to serving low-resourced participants and helping them build better, healthier futures and climb the economic ladder remains palpable and one of our primary focus. To that end, we strengthened our outreach and services for the veterans and the LGBTQIA community. We also increased our capacity to help people addicted to heroin and other opioids on their recovery journey and doubled the number of participants in our Medication Assisted Treatment Program to over 350; and our innovative Telemedicine program launched in 2017 marked its 1,000-patient milestone. In addition, in 2019 we plan to open a new center in Montgomery County to gradually replace our existing site in Silver Spring, which is beyond capacity. Presently, we are providing behavioral health services at this new site where the need is urgent. The new center will offer our comprehensive social change model, with the introduction of dental services for the first time in the state of Maryland. We will not rest on our laurels, however. While celebrating the achievements of the past, we recognize that there is still much work to be done. For example, many in our region still lack health insurance and we have to raise funds to defray the $6 million in free care that we gave this past year. In addition, we face the possibility of budget cuts to Medicaid and other health programs. We are also working on some exciting plans for the years ahead. Our 30th anniversary year marks the start of a bright future of further growth and even greater impact. Our gratitude for the dedication and innovative ideas of our Board of Directors, staff, and the commitment of thousands of volunteers, individual, corporate, foundation and government donors and our partners whose unwavering support sustains our work. Together we will make sure that the community we serve in our region has access to affordable, quality care, and educational and economic opportunities to enable them to fulfill their potential. 4 Story of Impact JJ (far left) with his parents and 3 siblings in 2014 It s been four years since JJ was forced to leave his hometown in Honduras when both of his parents and his unborn brother were murdered by one of the insurgent groups that control large parts of the country. Traumatized by the loss of his parents and the threat of having to join the group if he stayed in town, JJ migrated to the United States to live with his aunt, a Mary s Center participant. We had no choice but to use our life savings plus borrow extra money to bring my nephew with the hope that he could provide for his siblings, says Marta, his aunt and guardian. It s been a stormy journey but thanks to the intervention of an interdisciplinary team at Mary s Center, today, JJ s story is different. With the support of our medical and behavioral health team, JJ received intense therapy and the necessary immunizations to start school. Our social services team helped with school and health insurance enrollment and through our advocacy work, we were able to find a probono lawyer who helped him become a permanent resident. Currently, JJ works at a telecommunications company helping to connect people with the world and hoping to reunite again with his siblings when he becomes a U.S. citizen. The fund will help children served by our School-Based Mental Health Program and ensure that Mary s Center is able to meet their needs.
