1 Barren Heights Newsletter Winter 2013 Volume 7 Issue 1 I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys so that people may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the LORD has done this. Isaiah 41:18 The construction team for the New Barn has made such amazing headway over the winter months. This project is a BIG TASK for a small grass roots, allvolunteer, organization. We need your help to PAVE THE WAY. Please join us in this great adventure! Each brick paver represents a $250 donation to the project. Entire sections can be purchased for $5000. Brick and Section donors will be acknowledged on the building with a permanent plaque. We have raised $105,000 of our $150,000 capital campaign goal. Please help us get-r-done

2 Page Family Enrichment Retreats Spring is just around the corner. The calendar is now posted on our website, and on February 20th we will begin accepting reservations online. Help spread the word to the qualified families you know, who could use a break. Showered with Love and Gifts Thank you lovely ladies of Parkway WMU for your wonderful gifts. The games, crafts and bubbles will bring such delight to Barren Heights visitors. We are especially excited about the new curtains, quilts, tetherball set and carpetball game! WOW.

3 Page 3 Important Calendar Dates!!!! February 28 (Thursday) Join us at the Middletown location of Mark s Feed Store for Barren Heights Fund-Dining and Fellowship. This is a great way to help fund the New Barn, enjoy great food and reconnect with ministry friends. Present the voucher below when you order and 15% of the cost of your meal will be donated to Barren Heights. Hope to see you there! Bring one voucher and give another to a friend. Offer is valid all day, for dine in or carry out. May 11 (Saturday) The First Ever Barren Heights Family Fun Festival. This new event, scheduled in Louisville for 2013, combines all the fun and excitement of our Reunion Open House and the Family Fun Run-Walk-Roll. This special day will be hosted by Barren Heights volunteers in cooperation with Amazing Grace Bible Church and Calvin Presbyterian Church. Save the date and watch for details! November 2 (Saturday) This is our tentative date for the 8 th annual Barren Height Benefit Dinner & Auction. If you are interested in serving on the event team please call Kathy Lesmeister at

4 Page 4 Volunteer Award Winners The Barren Heights Volunteer Service Award Program was established to recognize and reward our outstanding Adult and Youth volunteers. At the 2012 Benefit Dinner, Mike and Denise Amos announced the Inaugural and Namesake award recipients. Daniel s Dream Award The Adult Volunteer Award is named in honor of Danny Raisor. Like Daniel of the Bible, Mr. Raiser is characterized by faith, prayer, courage, consistency, and clearly both men were selected for special service to the King. Abigail s Impact Award The Youth Volunteer Award is named in honor of Abbi Rose. Like Abigail of the Bible, Abbi is sensible, capable and brings her best in times of challenge. She demonstrates that you do not need a prestigious title to play an important role. Coincidently the name Abigail means Father s Joy.

5 Page 5 Barren Heights Spring Work Days We are changing things up a bit this year. Instead of scheduling one full weekend to prepare the camp for the retreat season, we are hosting several single work days. This decision was made by our Board of Directors in an effort to better steward our financial resources as well as our volunteer resources. If you are interested in helping with one of our Spring or Fall Work Days and we hope you are please send an to info@barrenheights.org with Work Days in the subject line and we will add you to the Work Day Communication List. Work Day #1 March 16 (8:00 AM 4:00 PM Central) Work Day #2 April 27 (8:00 AM 4:00 PM Central) WE LOVE OUR VOLUNTEERS! Winter Retreats Many people have conveyed to us that they are certain God spends His weekends at Barren Heights. Of course we know that the Lord is omniscient. But for the record, the Winter Retreats at Barren Heights have affirmed that God does hang out at the camp on weekends regardless of the season. The Mission of Barren Heights is simply to love and encourage families. We do this by providing free mini-vacation style weekend retreats for families with physically or developmentally disabled children. This year we have expanded our programming to include two Marriage Retreats and a Dads Retreat. Feedback has suggested that these winter offerings are timely, pertinent and in some cases life-changing. To God be the glory!

This Christian charity is operated solely by volunteers. The campus, located in Allen County, Kentucky near Barren River Lake was completed in 2005 for the primary purpose of hosting mini-vacation style retreats for families who have one or more children with a physical or developmental disability. The family enrichment retreats run Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, and they are free.
