4 MAKER FUN FACTORY FOLLOW UP! Our week of VBS was AMAZING! Many thanks to the 180 youth and adults who gave their time to volunteer. By using their gifts and talents, 326 children learned that no matter what, they are loved by the ultimate Maker and He has a purpose for their lives! WOW, God! Our VBS MISSION FOCUS was to help children in Peru have clean water. Each day the kids heard stories about children in Peru who have to go to the river and collect water each day. This water is the same water used for the public bath, boat highway, fishing spots and recreational swimming pool. Kids brought in donations and raised $1,136.86! That s enough money for 227 Peruvian children to have clean water for an entire year! WOW, God! As in the past, we will share our wonderful VBS DECORATIONS with other churches. We know they will be used at Calvary Baptist in Foley and Barnwell Baptist. They may even travel to Jasper First UMC! It s like a gift that keeps on giving! WOW, God! Here are some of the mission projects our 6TH GRADERS did during VBS: served at Prodisee Pantry, cleaned up Mobile Bay with Mobile Baykeepers, prepared box lunches for Fairhope city workers and delivered them, sorted school uniforms for our August uniform drive, organized cleaning buckets in the basement and worked on projects for our Tough Dogs Cancer Support Ministry. WOW, God! Rising 5th & 6th Graders (SWIFT Ministry) Last month, 34 elementary children and 3 adult volunteers from Fairhope UMC gathered with other churches from the Alabama-West Florida Conference at Blue Lake Camp for a week of outdoor fun and spiritual growth. Our camp theme was Branching Out: Connecting through Christ. Thank you Jaime Rux and Greg Tapscott for serving as adult volunteers! We re hosting an evening Community VBS at the Rotary Youth Club on August 7-9. We ll do a condensed version of Maker Fun Factory! We need volunteers! 9 Tough Dogs Chemo Care Bag As part of their missions for VBS, 6th Graders help Tough Dogs by stuffing pillows & filling Chemo Care Bags. In 2006 several women in the Fairhope community were being treated for different types of cancer. The ladies approached Dr. Ann Pearson, Director of Caring Ministries with their idea of starting a cancer support group. With her support, the Tough Dogs Cancer support group, opened to the community in the fall of The group, which is open to all members of the community and targets not only cancer sufferers but caregivers also, meets the second Tuesday of each month. In 2010 the Tough Dogs Cancer support group decided to put together bags filled with comfort items for patients receiving chemotherapy. Each bag contains: A HOPE blanket to help keep the patient warm during treatments, Chap Stick and hand cream as their skin gets dry during treatments, snacks, water, puzzle books, mints, tissues, magazines, hand sanitizer, a pen, cancer healing information, an invitation to join the Tough Dogs cancer support group, a journal with a hand written message by a cancer survivor, tea, donated silver plate teaspoon engraved Stir, Hope and Believe, gently used books donated from the Friends of the Fairhope Library, and a hand knitted hat to keep their head warm. The cost to put together each bag is $ The bags are totally funded through donations. Donations come from caring people who hear about the effort and want to lend their support. Some are cancer survivors, family members of a cancer patient or people who have a heart to help those who are suffering. Between the Mitchell Cancer Center in Fairhope and the Southern Cancer Center in Daphne, twenty five bags are distributed each month. Chemo Care Bags are given to patients fighting all types of cancers and from all walks of life. In 2016 they expanded the Chemo Bag outreach to include gas cards for patients. Many patients travel long distances to get to their treatments which creates a hardship for some who must come each day for treatment for six or more weeks. Gas cards are given to Southern and Mitchell cancers centers and they distribute the cards to the people who need the help. The response from those who have received a bag has been unbelievable. They can t believe that total strangers care enough for them to provide such a caring gift. If you would like to help and support this caring project, please contact Dr. Ann Pearson at
