Our Trunk-or-Treat is a month away, Thanksgiving is 2 months away, and Christmas music will be playing in stores very shortly. This year has flown by! Speaking of Christmas, I hope you will make plans to attend this year's Christmas program and bring a friend. It is a much larger production than Westside has done in quite some time with plenty of music and drama. As of now, it is scheduled for December 16 with 2 showings. Finally, we have finished with our trek through Esther on Sunday mornings. This coming Sunday, we will begin a fun journey through the New Testament book of James. It's a wonderful book with plenty of easy application regarding how to live the Christian life. I hope you will join us each Sunday as we learn from God's Word. 3 When most people think about teen addiction a few things probably come to mind: Drugs, Alcohol, Sex and maybe perhaps, Adrenaline. Do we ever consider that a teenager can be addicted to cell phones and video games? Unfortunately, it s time that we start tossing those two things in the conversation alongside the other addictions because they are rapidly becoming a regular part of many students struggles. Fox News Health reports that, according to research, we check our phones as many as 190 times per day-and this is regarding adults not teens. Teens are believed to check them much more than that-about 7 hours each day! This compulsive need to be connected, to the phone and to what it gives us, is similar to compulsion associated with substance abuse and other addictions. People who have fallen victim to addiction to drugs or alcohol find themselves seeking use of the substances at any cost. They will lose sleep, miss important activities, avoid responsibility, even engage in risky behavior, to fulfill their craving for the substance. More and more, people are behaving in similar ways to ensure continued use of cell phones...and video games. Teens are having symptoms of withdrawal, are losing sleep and are becoming more disconnected from real life relationships. Over the last several years multiple reports have been discovered of teens committing suicide because they lost at their favorite video games. Who knew that technology would bring us to such a morbid and grave conversation?? Who knew that certain medicines would be prescribed to students because they cannot handle being away from their phones and video games long enough to function on a daily basis? Cell Phone and Video Game Addiction has now been labeled an official behavioral disorder! Brian Capshaw Youth, College & Career Pastor Studentministry@wbcmurray.org Treating these addictions is not easy. Some of the following ideas may help: 1-Apply data limits. Cell phone providers offer inexpensive, passwordactivated programs. These programs shut off cell phones at night. 2-Tech timeouts for the family in the evening and on the weekends can help. 3-Try using a Be Present Box at the dinner table. Turned-off cell phones stay in the box during family time (thanks to Chick fila for this great idea).4- Create a cell phone suspension one day a week, or even one afternoon or evening per week. 5- No cell phones in the bedroom past bedtime. Ultimately, technology isn t the real enemy. Our mistake is in thinking that the danger of addiction is the behavior itself, when the behavior is just a symptom of a deeper issue. In the end we know that it s a SIN issue. The heart of addiction is loving anything more than we love God. With a biblical perspective, proper boundaries set in place and many times the right kind of medication (depending on the situation) addictions can become a thing of the past.
