1 Issue 9 Newsletter December 2014 Welcome to the Mid Sussex Wellbeing Newsletter. First we start with... New back to exercise classes available Now! The exercise classes are aimed at people who are inactive, to encourage them back into exercise or to try exercise for the first time. The Back to Exercise programme will create opportunities for people to take part in a wide range of different activities and will respond to people s interests where possible. Sessions currently running include Beginners Zumba, Beginners Pilates, and a Beginners Stretch and tone class. Starting soon, walking football. Look out for a beginners / returners taster cricket day in Mid February. The courses will run for 12 weeks and cost only 1 per session. They will run in a variety of community venues across Mid Sussex and take place in both daytimes and evenings. The sessions will be taught at a pace suitable for the individual and support will be offered throughout the course. 2 As the cold Weather sets in we want to remind you how to keep our elderly and vulnerable residents As the colder winter weather sets in, we wanted to remind everyone about help available now to keep elderly and vulnerable residents warm and healthy in their own homes. West Sussex Emergency Heater Scheme this is available to elderly and vulnerable residents struggling to heat their homes due to broken or failing heating systems. For a one-off 1 payment, qualifying households can get one oil-filled radiator to provide emergency warmth. This scheme is intended as a stop-gap measure until a long-term reliable heating solution can be found. If you have a client who you believe could qualify, please complete obtain and complete the application form in full and it to the Wellbeing Team at Arun District Council (info@arunwellbeing.org.uk) who are managing referrals until the 12th January The new Fuel Poverty Co-ordinator (contact details TBC) will manage the scheme after this date. Referrals will only be accepted from frontline practitioners. HHCRO Boiler and Insulation Scheme run by Your Energy Sussex, the local authority partnership promoting energy saving, this scheme can provide qualifying households with a replacement boiler and improved insulation for their home. Funding is provided through the Energy Companies Obligation (a central Government scheme) with a top up from Your Energy Sussex for the households in most need. Full scheme details and eligibility criteria are available on the WSCC website. When making a referral for an emergency heater please consider whether the client could qualify for longer-term help through the HHCRO Boiler and Insulation Scheme. Because of the high level of grant funding required to install a boiler or insulation, please be aware that the HHCRO eligibility criteria is more demanding than the emergency heater scheme. 4 Time to Talk Self referral available in Mid Sussex Support for anxiety and depression now more accessible for people in Mid Sussex People living in Mid Sussex who experience anxiety and depression can now self-refer to access support from Sussex Community NHS Trust s Time to Talk service. Time to Talk is a friendly and approachable service offering talking therapies for people who are struggling with psychological issues such as stress, worry and depression. It is part of a national initiative to bring psychological therapies closer to where people live. Until now access to the service has been via a GP referral but people living in East Grinstead, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill can now self-refer to the service by simply making a phone call to the local Mid Sussex team. Ed Brennan, general manager, Time to Talk, said: We are passionate about offering treatments for people who may be reluctant to visit their GP and seek advice and we want to make it as easy as possible for people to selfrefer to Time to Talk. If you are struggling and need our support, we d urge you to get in touch with our team of therapists so that we can help you move forward with your life as soon as possible. Our plan is to introduce the self-referral option to all our services across West Sussex from February Dr Ali Parish, West Sussex-based GP, said: I m delighted that Time to Talk is making its service more accessible. I ve seen people really turn their lives around after years of struggling thanks to this fantastic service. The sad thing is some people never pluck up the courage to visit their GP, so this new option, in addition to the GP referral route, is a very positive move. Time to Talk offers a range support including guided self-help via the phone or face to face. They also offer group courses, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and counselling. To make a self-referral, people living in East Grinstead, Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill can call: to speak to the Time to Talk team. Can you stay off the booze for 31 days? Dry January We want you to join us for 31 days of booze free bliss (or sheer struggle depending on how you see things!) We want you to go to that party, to turn up for that pub quiz, to go for that long weekend away, but ditch the wine and beer and choose a soft drink for company instead. People are bound to ask you what you re up to and hey presto you re talking about what you drink, why you drink, the last time you went for a month without a drink... Last year people told us they enjoyed the challenge; some people lost weight, some slept better, almost everyone saved cash and said they d try and reduce their drinking for the rest of the year. Last year more than 17,300 people signed up to Alcohol Concern s Dry January Campaign.More than 25,000 took part in our online community, sharing experiences and cheering each other on.last year people told us that taking part in Dry January was a life changing experience for them.
5 Get the right care from your NHS, right now Emergency consultants in Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex urge local people to ensure they get the Right Care, Right Now through the fourth in a series of online films Download our NEW Mobile App or visit the website Specialist consultants working in emergency departments at our two biggest hospitals in Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex have launched a brand new film to help local people get the Right Care, Right Now this winter. They join a raft of healthcare professionals - including nurses, doctors and pharmacists - who have come together to promote our NHS Mobile web App an interactive directory of local NHS services at your fingertips, to guide you to the right place for health care where and when you need it. Jason Gray, Paediatric Consultant Nurse from Princess Royal Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Children s Hospital in Brighton, wwstars in the film. He said: For children who are medically unwell, they can access their GP, or call 111 out of hours and take advice from them. If they need to then they would be referred to the children's emergency department here in Brighton, alternatively there is a minor injuries facility for children at Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, who will deal with minor cuts and bruises minor broken bones and minor head injuries. Julian Webb, Emergency Department Lead Clinician at Redhill Hospital, part of Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust, also features in the clip. The emergency department at the hospital will see about 87,000 patients a year, with up to 100 ambulances arriving every day. He said: We aim to see all our patients and treat them appropriately within four hours. It's probably worth noting though that if you have something minor then you can be seen in Crawley Urgent Treatment Centre for example, or by your local pharmacist, and probably be seen much more quickly. NHS Crawley CCG and NHS Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG developed the Right Care, Right Now campaign in partnership with other local NHS organisations. Dr Minesh Patel, lead GP for Horsham and Mid Sussex CCG, said: Right Care, Right Now is also about supporting our NHS this winter. Everyone knows that demand on care is at its highest when it is coldest. Together, we can look after patients and look after our NHS - we all have a part to play. The Right Care, Right Now campaign and app is one step in the right direction. Film clips starring our two lead GPs as well as local community pharmacists and urgent care nurses from across Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex have already been launched.
