Shaping Health, Your Choice, Your Voice Newsletter from NHS Salford CCG Issue 18 Autumn 2018
Introduction Welcome to NHS Salford Clinical Commissioning Group s Autumn/Winter 2018 edition of Shaping Health, our citizens newsletter keeping you up-to-date on what s happening in health and care in Salford. The winter months are challenging for the NHS, especially for urgent care services. Therefore please help ease the pressure on health services in Salford by staying well this winter and protecting you and your family from the flu with the annual flu vaccination. As the flu virus changes, it is important that you get your flu jab every year to make sure that you are protected and prevent it from spreading to others. The flu jab is free from your local GP or pharmacist if you fit certain criteria. You can find out more about whether you are eligible to get your free vaccination and how to get it in the article Can you help us help you this winter on page 5. I hope you enjoy this edition of Shaping Health. As always, you can keep up to date with the latest CCG news by following us on social media (@SalfordCCG) or visiting our website With best wishes Tom Dr Tom Tasker, Chair Have your say on health issues at our next Citizens Panel event Tuesday, November , 10am 2.15pm The Light House Venue, 12 Centenary Park, Coronet Way, Eccles Anyone living in Salford or who has a Salford GP is welcome to attend. 4 start well...live Salford aims to improve young people s oral health Salford is one of four locations in Greater Manchester set to create a local oral health campaign to raise awareness on the importance of having a healthy mouth and teeth. The city s Start Well Partnership which includes Salford City Council, Salford CCG and Salford Community Leisure, has been engaging with the community at parent and toddler groups and are now on track to launch a campaign. The campaign will target parents and those who look after children to encourage better oral and dental health as most vulnerable children are facing very poor oral health and almost a quarter of 5 years olds have tooth decay. Engagement sessions found that the majority of parents and carers were aware of the importance of keeping teeth healthy but didn t know about some of the dental services available such as getting a free toothbrush and toothpaste at your child s first visit and that the dentist should be putting a fluoride coating on their child s teeth. The most common barriers stopping children attending the dentist include parents fear and previous bad experiences of the dentist, parents being unable to register at the same dentist as their child and language for those who don t speak fluent English and understand the importance of good oral health. More engagement is planned over the coming months to help shape the campaign which will tackle these barriers. The creative materials provide simple messages to parents and carers of the importance of ensuring children visit the dentist regularly. Page 3
well...age well Holiday hunger project helped feed children during summer A partnership holiday hunger project was delivered over the summer period in collaboration with Salford Youth Alliance. Holiday Hunger came into action after evidence was highlighted to us that a significant number of children in Salford would not be getting access to a proper meal for over the six week holidays (with no school dinners being available), therefore we agreed to do something positive to address this growing issue. For five weeks, Salford CCG worked in partnership with Salford Community Leisure (SCL), linking in with one of their well established and hugely successful holiday activity programmes (SAYO & SPARKY) at Oasis Academy. The children took part in planned sporting and fun activities during the morning and afternoon (as they have done over the last few years), but - whereas previously they would ve been asked to leave the building for a lunch break, for these five weeks, they were allowed to stay within the venue and were provided with a meal on site (sandwiches and fruit for four days per week and a hot meal for one of the days per week). Whilst being fed, the SCL team and Salford CCG s engagement officers delivered bespoke health and wellbeing engagement sessions on healthy teeth, sugar awareness, healthy body and mind and Think, Why A&E? In total, 125 children took part in the lunch time engagement sessions around health and received a lunch. Evaluation showed that 85% of attendees rated the sessions as good or very good. Page 4
start well...live Can you help us to help you this winter? Salford is supporting Help Us Help You, a national multichannel campaign aimed to ease the pressure on NHS urgent care and emergency services. For the winter months, the campaign will focus on flu immunisation, staying well in the winter, NHS 111, community pharmacy and extended GP hours. As the cold winter nights draw in, it is important that people take steps to prevent winter illnesses such as the flu, coughs and colds, aches and pains and to self-treat them if you do find yourself unwell. The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get your vaccine. The flu jab is free if you are over 65, living with a long term health condition, living in residential care, a carer, pregnant; and aged two to eight years old. It s best to get your flu jab in October and November, but it will still protect you in December and January. Don t put it off, speak to your GP or local pharmacist. Keeping warm in and outside of the home, eating healthily, keeping hydrated and washing hands to prevent germs spread are all ways to prevent colds. If an illness is getting worse, visit a pharmacist or GP. If you are unsure what to do, visit the NHS Choices website ( ) which has really useful tips or call NHS 111 for fast medical advice. Do not go to A&E unless it is a life-threatening emergency. Elderly people may be more vulnerable to the common cold and winter illnesses and have a higher chance of developing complications so it s important to check on them, making sure their home is at least 18 C (65F) and they have regular hot meals and drinks. Checking they ve got enough medication at home and whether they ve been to see their pharmacist to stop any minor conditions getting worse is also very important. You may also want to help your elderly relatives and neighbours if they have mobility issues by getting their shopping, so that they do not run out of the everyday essentials over the festive period. During the festive period, it is useful to be aware that GP and pharmacies will have shorter opening hours and may be closed on bank holidays such as Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year s Day. The campaign will also highlight the importance of keeping antibiotics working by encouraging people to not take them if they don t need to. Antibiotics encourage harmful bacteria that live inside you to become resistant, therefore putting you and your family at risk of more severe and longer illness. Take your GP s advice. Page 5
well...age well CAN-Move programme aids cancer recovery Hundreds of people in Salford fighting or recovering from cancer are being helped back to full fitness through an NHS exercise programme hailed brilliant by participants. More than 750 people in Salford have already been referred to CAN- Move, A12-week tailored exercise programme to help reduce long-term side effects of cancer treatment such as fatigue, weight loss and mental wellbeing through physical activity. Participant Janice Cheshire said: We re so lucky to have the CAN-Move programme here in Salford, it s such a great scheme. The class makes you feel energised and less fatigued. The instructors are fantastic and create such a welcoming atmosphere. I was the least likely person to join the gym but now I have joined, I really enjoy it. CAN-Move hosts fitness classes such as low intensity circuit training, supervised gym sessions, dancing and cycling where patients can work alone or in a group. Personal trainers at Salford Community Leisure play a vital role in the CAN-Move scheme, implementing the physical activity into patients daily routines. Dr Steven Elliot, Salford CCG s clinical lead for cancer said: We are working closely with partners to support local people who have experienced cancer and CAN-Move is one of our great successes. We want people recovering from cancer to get the support they need. That s where CAN-Move comes in with the support of their amazing trainers and their physical activity classes. There are so many opportunities for anyone recovering from cancer to attend a class near them and I would really encourage anyone who has completed cancer treatment to join. CAN-Move is available to anyone living in Salford who has had a diagnosis of any cancer. Referrals to the programme can be made by cancer nurse specialists at Salford Royal Foundation Trust, GPs and practice nurses at any one of the 45 Salford practices and self-referrals. Page 6
start well...live Funding boost for mental health care in the community Salford is to become one of only four locations in the UK to receive funding from the National Lottery to improve the support available in the community for people living with mental health problems. The National Lottery has awarded 3.4 million to Living Well UK, a three-year programme which involves voluntary and public sector organisations working in partnership to support people living with mental health problems to get the help they need quickly and live well in the community. The programme is inspired by an approach developed in Lambeth, south London, which has made a significant impact over the last seven years helping people with mental health issues get support within the community earlier and also involving them in the design of the support they need for the future. This new integrated way of working in Lambeth has reduced the number of people going into residential care by 43% and saved almost 2.5m by offering support that focuses on recovery in the community rather than residential or inpatient provision. Through Living Well UK, it is hoped Salford, along with Edinburgh, Luton and Tameside & Glossop, will become internationally recognised as leading the way for providing good mental health in community and primary care settings. Dr Tom Tasker, chair of Salford CCG, said: Mental health is often referred to as the Cinderella of the NHS, but that is not the case for Salford and providing the best possible mental health support is a huge priority for us. Having this funding from the Big Lottery Fund and support from the Innovation Unit through Living Well UK is going to help us transform the way people live with mental health in Salford and I m looking forward to seeing just what we are going to achieve over the next three years. Salford CCG has led Salford s involvement with the programme along with partners Start in Salford, VOCAL Health and Wellbeing, Six Degrees Social Enterprise, Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, Salford City Council and Salford Primary Care Together. Broughton Hub Page 7
well...age well The Big Health Day focuses on physical health Big Health Day returned for the ninth year running to give adults with learning disabilities, carers and their staff advice on the importance of looking after their own health. This year the theme was around physical health with workshops and stalls focusing on the issues that are known to be of high importance for people with learning disabilities. The event, organised by Salford CCG, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and Salford City Council took place at Salford City Football Club. It included a workshop from Unique Improvements on bowel and bladder health; Mind in Salford looked at health rights and how to speak up; and the community learning disability team also led workshops on epilepsy, safe swallowing, healthy eating and health checks. Have your say on the Garden Needs and Prince s Park Garden Centre service s Salford CCG and Salford City Council are seeking to improve their understanding of the Garden Needs service and the Prince s Park Garden Centre service. Both offer horticulture opportunities to vulnerable people, predominantly people with learning disabilities, autistic people and people with mental health problems. The services provide training and volunteering opportunities whilst looking to optimise people s wellbeing by participation in the natural world. We would very much like to hear from people who use or have used the services and from their carers or support workers to help us understand the services. Complete the survey at We would also like to hear from other people who know about the service but are not service user or their carers or supporters. Complete the survey at Both surveys close at noon on Friday, November 2. Page 8
start well...live Reducing the risk of vascular dementia With approximately 2,000 people diagnosed with vascular dementia in Salford, Salford CCG is working with partners to develop a campaign to raise awareness of the risk factors and reduce the number of people being diagnosed. Although ageing is the biggest risk factor for dementia, evidence shows there are things you can do to help reduce your own risk. These include keeping active, eating healthily and exercising your mind. The most common cognitive symptoms in the early stages of vascular dementia are sudden confusion, problems concentrating including planning or organising, making decisions or solving problems which can include difficulties following a series of steps (e.g. cooking a meal) and maybe problems recalling recent events. We asked the people of Salford to help shape the campaign and survey results concluded that people felt raising awareness of what vascular dementia is, what the risk factors are and where to find support to combat those risks, were the most important aspects of the campaign. The survey also showed that key messages should be displayed in different formats to suit the audience it is aimed at and for the information to be available in various places so that no one is missing out. This information will all be considered ensuring that the public s views have been paramount in shaping the campaign over the next few months ready to be launched in February Salford celebrates being age-friendly On October 1, more than 70 people celebrated International Day for Older People at an event held at Eccles Town Hall. The event was an opportunity to feedback on work that older people have been involved in since over the past twelve months and to develop a baseline plan for an Age Friendly Salford. The plan will be monitored over the next year by the Age Friendly Action Alliance which consists of older people and key partners from across services in Salford. The alliance will help deliver priorities identified by older people and make Salford an Age Friendly city. The event was funded by Ambition for Ageing and The Big Lottery Fund. Page 9 The Lowry, Ordsall
well...age well Join the Dementia Champions Group The Dementia Champions Group, which consists of 15 members with mild to moderate dementia, carers and ex carers, is welcoming new members. The group, formed in 2013, helps Salford CCG and Salford City Council to improve their delivery of dementia services and provide support for those with dementia and their carers. From April 2017 to March 2018 the group have given feedback to CCG partners Salford Royal, Greater Manchester Mental Health and other providers in the community on what was good and what needs improving about the services. If you would like to join the Dementia Champions Group, please call Caroline Allport on or Page 10
You said... We did... Voluntary sector support How will you engage with voluntary organisations to support new initiatives and will there be money available to assist with the prevention initiative? The CCG has a strong relationship with the voluntary sector and has invested 3million over three years to support local voluntary and community sector organisations. The 3rd Sector fund is managed via Salford CVS and further information and details on how to apply can be found on the CVS website. Children and young people Where are the healthy eating & lifestyles initiatives for children? We are proud to have delivered a number of initiatives with children and young people over the past 12 months. This includes delivering workshops with primary children on subjects such as the dangers of consuming excessive sugar which can lead to tooth decay, obesity and long term conditions. We ve also just completed an emotional health and wellbeing reassurance project, coproduced with children, which explores the transition from primary to secondary education. We are in the process of developing a local tooth decay campaign and we re currently engaging with Salford parents to identify the barriers which prevents children under the age of five accessing dental care. Urgent care What is the new urgent care service and is it available 24/7 or does it fall down at weekends? As part of Salford Together New Care model development, Rapid Response and the new Salford Urgent Care Team are merging to create a streamlined response for patients who are at risk of admission to hospital and who need help at home to remain at home. This service is available 7 days a week (8am 10pm) and referrals are taken by GPs or the ambulance service. For more information please visit Governance Structure Who makes up the CCG governing body and how are they elected? The Governing Body consists of: The chair; Five Neighbourhood Clinical Leads/Neighbourhood Leads; Two other GPs namely the Clinical Director for Transformation and Medical Director; One registered nurse; One secondary care specialist doctor; The accountable officer; The chief finance officer For further information please follow the link: nhs.uk/the-governing-body Page 11
