2016 Committee Members ADFAS Brisbane Inc. Newsletter No 5: April 2016 Chair: Keith Hawken Thursday & Interest Day Co-ordinator: Meg White Vice Chair: Fran Maitland Wednesday Co-ordinator: Keith Hawken & Annie Hall Treasurer: Vicki William Lecturer Co-ordinator & Raffles : Noela Rogers Secretary Ann Graham Minutes Secretary & Young Arts: Susie Craig Membership Sec: Margaret Brannock Newsletter: Fran Maitland & Ann Graham CHAIRMAN'S REPORT Keith Hawken Our Adfas year has got off to a good start with the wonderful Lecture and Interest Day by Paul Harris. Thanks to all of you who have participated and, hopefully will continue to participate in our Raffles, some of our members are contributing prizes so we come out even better in the amount that we can give to our Young Arts Fund. Our first set of raffles (evening and day lectures) made over $400 so we are setting the bar high for the rest of the year. Currently we are down about 10% on member numbers compared to the past two years and this is slightly worrying although we are still getting a small trickle of new members. We do need more if we are to remain viable in the current high cost environment. Please keep it in mind. Our Secretary, Ann Graham and I recently attended the March meeting of the Association of Adfas in Sydney. These meetings provide a great forum for exchanging ideas, working on common problems and getting advice from those who have "been there and done that". I have been to a few of these now and always learn something. At this meeting the Chairman of NADFAS, June Robinson, and the Overseas Area Representative, Gillian Stevens, were both in attendance. ADFAS is actually now not part of NADFAS but will always enjoy a very close relationship and to have both June and Gillian address the meeting was a bonus. Our Society has contributed to the workings of the Association over most of its more than thirty years, with Margaret North being an early member of the executive and then Fred Fraser followed by Peter Schneider (who has just retired) and the ever energetic Sue Drummond who remains as the Chairman of the Lecturers' Committee and an ex officio member of the Executive; a very important role. At these meetings several Chairmen of Societies are asked, in turn, to give a short report of their activities. One's turn comes about every two years. This time it was our turn and I spoke about our membership and fiscal challenges and how we are trying to overcome them, our contributions to the School of Arts Program and how we will be restarting our Young Arts program in the near future. Some of our ideas seemed to meet with approval as there was note taking by some Chairmen. It is always a very informative session with a wonderful exchange of ideas. We have been given the list of lecturers for 2017 and I can see that we will be in for yet another great year, as we will this year as it, all too quickly, rolls by! My very best wishes to you all Keith Hawken Have you brought a friend to our ADFAS lecture yet? NO! But the next lecture will be great fun. Tim Stimson s How Pleasant to know Edward Lear.. Wed 18 th May OR at 7.30 Thursday 26 th May at 1pm

REPORT On ASSOCIATION OF ADFAS Meeting by Ann Graham (Secretary - s) Our Chairman Keith Hawken and I recently attended the Association of ADFAS Societies Council Meeting and AGM in Sydney. This meeting was attended by representatives from the 35 ADFAS Societies throughout Australia and two representatives from NADFAS in the UK. The first day consisted of workshops, the first of which was an overview of the ADFAS webpage and Facebook page. We were encouraged to have a look at the webpage as it contains a wealth of information about how the societies run, lists societies' programs and also has an interesting section on Church Recordings and School of Arts histories and lots more. We also heard of the way the Association supports the arts in the community with the Patricia Robertson Scholarship Fund, Opera Australia's Regional Children's Chorus performing in the Marriage of Figaro in 2016, as well as individual societies' contributions to Young Arts and the Association's magazine ArtLife. The Council Meeting and AGM were held on the second day where various reports were given. Some points of interest were - planning for lectures in 2017 and 2018 is well underway (Sue Drummond, a member of ADFAS Brisbane, leads the Lecturer's Committee); approx 25% of the Association's funds is raised by commission from bookings made through ADFAS Travel; a number of societies are carrying out Church Recordings and School of Arts histories. Reports on various societies were given, including one from Keith Hawken on ADFAS Brisbane Society. I certainly gained a deeper understanding of the way ADFAS works and the overall impression I got from these days was that the many committees running the ADFAS Societies throughout Australia are a committed group of volunteers, working to uphold the aims of the Association ie. the promotion and advancement of aesthetic education, the cultivation and study of the decorative and fine arts and the preservation of our cultural and artistic heritage. Keith Hawken and Sue Drummond giving their presentations at the ADFAS Meetings in Sydney

Introducing Susie Craig our new Committee Member for 2016 My mother introduced me to ADFAS a few years ago and I have embraced the role of the Young Arts Coordinator with enthusiasm. I am also the Minutes secretary for the Committee. Training as a midwife.i learnt about the efficiency and functionality of design, then whilst working in PR, about industrial and commercial design. Travel, plus working abroad in Los Angeles, London and Australia has strengthened my belief that good design should be integrated into all aspects of our society including town planning, art and architecture, homewares and food. Through ADFAS I have been able to add to my knowledge in these areas. I am intrigued with the Japanese philosophy of Shibumi, that values simplicity and functionality with a harmonious balance between craft and fine arts. I sell vintage and brocante home wares online and contribute to a number of blogs. Membership report : Margaret Brannock We currently have 173 Afternoon members and 85 Evening members, but in order to maintain the current financial situation we could do with another 40 members at least. Some members have chosen not to rejoin this year but this has been mainly to do with health and travel. Our free Guest pass offer (if membership was paid before Christmas) was very popular with over 40% of our members taking advantage of this option. We are still receiving regular queries about membership, which is good. If you have a friend who is interested in finding out about ADFAS please send us their and we can include them on our mailing list A request from your Membership Secretary for next year, if you remember: Please ensure that any changes in your personal details are highlighted so I do not miss recording them. Thanks. RAFFLES: Besides listening to great presenters, ADFAS Brisbane aspires to introduce the next generation to the world of the arts. This will be achieved through the Young Arts grant which is made possible through your donations and our raffles. Thank you to all those who bought tickets at the Wednesday night of Thursday lecture. Congratulations to all the winners. These raffles raised $460 for our Young Arts program and this puts us well on the way to achieving our 2016 goal. Please continue to support the raffles.

Promoting ADFAS by Richard Thomason We are always seeking ways to further the awareness of the Society and the enjoyment it provides. I have recently endeavoured to do so through several radio stations and news publications. I wonder whether members may also be able to help through societies to which they belong, eg View Clubs, Probus etc (providing it causes no embarrassment). Perhaps advertising forthcoming lectures. We can provide Flyers promoting each lecture. If you have any bright ideas which might provide an avenue for promoting ADFAS, I would be delighted to have your suggestions. Please contact me: richardthomason42@gmail.com Have you brought a guest to ADFAS yet? We really hope you have. Word of mouth is the best way to advertise what a brillant organisation ADFAS is. When you do bring a guest to help speed things up at the door could we ask you to have the $30 in an envelope and on the front include - your name, your guest s name and address as we would like to follow up on their visit. Fran Maitland Guest: Pip Smith psmith@gmail.com $30 Our April lecture was presented by Robert Ketton. It was an express journey through the past, present and the future of railways. Robert told us about the train recently restored and painted at the DownSteam Tourist Railway Museum. Robert invited us to visit the Museum so later in the year we plan an ADfAS Brisbane day trip to Toowoomba. We will keep you posted on dates for this trip. Possibly to be held in September. Our next Interest Day Interest Day Cancellations: Money paid for an Interest Day can only be refunded if an is received by the Committee 1 week prior to the Interest Day. It must be in writing ed to adfasbrisbane@yahoo.com.au If you do not have please send a letter to PO Box 441 Red Hill 4059 Thurs 14th July (10.15am pm) Kevin KARNEY: The Life and Times of the Sundial: A perspective on Civilization s most enduring Timekeeper. 5 COFFEE MORNINGS Your 2016 Committee is dedicated to making your experience of ADFAS a great one. We welcome new members and invite all to join members for coffee before the afternoon lecture on Thursdays at the State Library Café. Please feel free to meet at the café at around

Gallery Tour APT8 Fran Maitland On Friday 8 th April, our AdfAS Brisbane member Sue Drummond led a very informative, enjoyable tour of the APT8 exhibition. Fourteen members joined us for the tour and made donations towards Young Arts. We raised $86. Thank you to those who attended the tour. Many of those attending finished with lunch at the Gallery Café. We plan to organize another tour later in the year and perhaps include a lunch at very well reviewed GOMA restaurant with 2016 Citi Chef of the Year, Josue Lopez. I recently attended a dinner in the Water Gallery at QAG and enjoyed a memorable dinner with chef Josue Lopez. Next Lecture: Wednesday 18 th May & Thursday 26 th May Tim Stimson: How Pleasant to Know Edward Lear. Please consider bringing a friend and introducing them to ADFAS Watch out for our organised visits to other Galleries and exhibitions: This year we hope to have a trip to Toowoomba to the Railway Museum, another trip to Melbourne and perhaps a visit to the Tweed Gallery to the Margaret Olley rooms for those who missed out or those who just loved it and want to go again. Use of PHOTOS As you can see we sometimes use photos in our newsletter and we hope to use our Facebook page to promote our society. When I take photos I always ask if you are happy to have your photo in the newsletter. If you are not happy to have your photo (no names) used for promotion, please let me know when the photo is about to be taken. Or me at adfasbrisbane@yahoo.com.au I hope you enjoy reading this newsletter Fran Maitland Vice Chair ADFAS Brisbane
