I cannot believe my time as president is winding down. I have been honored to serve these past 2 and a half years. I want to thank all of you for your support, both as your president and on a personal level, as a sister mom. I truly appreciate all of your love and encouragement. The DEB is working on our convention. We hope many of you plan on coming to Massillon for some idea sharing and fellowship with your sister moms. We will be having a speaker, holding elections, having our Memorial Service, giving chapter reports and hearing from our National President. Saturday evening is Big Dipper Fun Night with bingo and a silent auction. Remember to bring your silent auction items for the Big Dipper. It is such a great educational assistance program; I encourage you all to support it. Please get your registrations in and your room reservations in as those deadlines are fast approaching. Please remember we will be in uniform Saturday morning and Sunday morning. The rest of the time is patriotic/casual dress. As we elect our new board, I want to wish the new President all the best. There are some things I did not get to accomplish, but I had an amazing experience. I know you will show her all the love, respect and support that you showered on me. 2 Convention Information We will be holding the Department of Ohio convention October 21 st, 22 nd, and 23 rd in Massillon at the Massillon Masonic Temple. Hotel rooms are available at the Hampton Inn. Please remember that Chapters will be give their reports, please your reports to Paula Lombardo at The reports are needed electronically for the Convention minutes. All DEB officers will be leaving their current offices this year. Everyone is encouraged to consider running for a position on department executive board. Below are the duties of each board position. Duties of Officers: Section 1. The Duties of the Department President are as follows: a.) Represent the organization with dignity and impartiality; b.) Attend events including Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies, Conventions, etc.; c.) Preside at Department Convention, board and committee meetings, etc.; d.) Be knowledgeable of the Corporation s history and Governing Documents; e.) Appoint non-elected Officers and committee Chairs making sure that the entire state organization is represented in these positions; f.) Respond to Member questions, inquiries from other organizations, media, etc.; g.) Work with the DEB and the Finance Committee to maintain financial income to support the various programs and projects; and h.) Within a month of becoming Department President, must send a letter to all Chapters and Departments with the minutes of the Convention and any Governing Document changes. This letter shall include a list of the current Department Officers and contact information, and a list of all Chapters and contact information for the Chapter. Section 2. The Duties of the Department First VP are as follows: a.) Assist and represent the President as necessary; b.) Assist in the running of the organization by communications; c.) Attend events and ceremonies whenever possible that the Department President invites her to attend; d.) Represent the Department President when she is unable to attend and calls upon the First VP to do so; and e.) Assist in any other activities or projects when called upon by the Department

3 President. For the Department of Ohio, the 1 st VP is the lead person for compliance questions and assistance. Section 3. The Duties of the Department Second VP are as follows: a.) Assist and represent the President when called upon; b.) Assist in the running of the organization by communications when asked for input; c.) Attend events and ceremonies whenever; d.) Represent the Department President when she is unable to attend and calls upon her to do so; and e.) Assist in any other activities, projects when called upon by the Department President. For the Department of Ohio, the 2 nd VP is responsible for the Newsletter. Section 4. The Duties of the Department Recording Secretary are as follows: a.) Record detailed minutes of the proceedings of the Department meetings, Department Convention and DEB meetings; b.) Assist the President in transmitting documents; c.) If the Department President does not appoint a Corresponding Secretary, then assist the DEB with any correspondence and mailings; d.) Submit these minutes to the Department President for review; e.) Send the Department Convention minutes to the Chapters and the NP within forty-five (45) days of the close of the Department Convention; and f.) Assist the Department President as asked. Section 5. The Duties of the Department Financial Secretary are as follows: a.) Receive and deposit all money received by the Chapter; b.) Transmit all bills to be paid with the authorization of the President, Executive Board and Finance Committee; c.) Maintain accurate financial records; and d.) Receive and process Membership applications, Roster Forms and dues received from the Chapters. Section 6. The duties of the Chapter Treasurer are as follows: a.) Pay all bills of the organization upon receipt of disbursement request; b.) Assure all checks are prepared properly and signed by herself and the Chapter Financial Secretary; and c.) Maintain accurate financial records Ohio s Shining Star Has your chapter selected your Shining Star yet? Each chapter should be nominating/selecting a Shining Star and then the Chapter should submit the nomination information to the Department of Ohio prior to the Department Convention. News from Chapters: Chapter 2 We celebrated a retirement of Bryan Bowman after 21 years of service to our country. We requested 5 Quilts of Valor be presented to our Veteran members and associates. Our chapter will also be hosting the first Gold Star Memorial Marker Dedication in Ohio and recognition of Gold Star families and Purple Heart Recipients. This will be on Sunday September 25 th. All BSM are welcome to attend.

5 Chapter 7 We are participating in the Medina County Veterans program in June presentation of the Moving Vietnam Wall, we are providing food and beverages for the volunteers and having an information booth. In July Middleburg Hts. is having the Moving Vietnam Wall also and we will have an information booth. Chapter 9 Buckeye Military Moms, Chapter 9 were chosen as the local beneficiary for Shootout for Soldiers in Worthington, Ohio. Twenty-four hours of lacrosse and over $57,000 raised for our Wounded Warriors, Veterans and Active Duty Military. Buckeye Military Moms, Chapter 9 working a Quaker Steak and Lube Bike Night raising over $ by selling new T-shirts,

6 cookbooks, jewelry, tote bags, and handmade items. The evening was packed full of fundraising, friendship and Blue Star Mom awareness. Chapter 10 Chapter 10 walked in the Lancaster/Fairfield County July 4th Parade. We enjoy the walk because we can talk, wave and hand out candy to people! We held our 5th Annual Golf Outing on July 30th at Pumpkinvine Golf Course in Lancaster, Oh. We had 19 teams and sold 32-hole sponsor signs this year! Our goal is to always serve good food and door prizes for everyone! We always have someone sing the National Anthem to kick off our outing instead of a shotgun start! This year we honored three individuals. Syd Smith, our prior "golf assistant". Syd did our scoring for us for several years. He passed away a week after the outing last year. We also honored Cpl. "Skip" Wells who was killed last year at the Recruiting Station in TN and his father is from our area. We also honored Pat Bowes, a veteran and a faithful support of our organization who had played the past four years. Our group at the Lancaster/Fairfield County July 4th Parade

7 Chapter 11 This year we have been very busy. We are a small chapter made up of 8 moms, 1 associate and 4 dads. We sent out over 300 boxes total this year. A local American Legion paid for all postage for our Christmas packing party boxes. We participated in 2 parades in our community and had our annual booth at the Preble County Pork Festival. This year at the festival we came up with an idea and we called it "Stars for Soldiers" we sold paper stars $1- $5 - Red Star $6-$10 - Blue Star over $10 White Stars People wrote supportive messages on the stars. I t was a huge hit, we sold over 100 stars this year and each star went into a Christmas Soldier boxes. We also where asked to decorate the Memory Cabin in our local winter festival. We decorated the cabin as a tribute to Soldiers all over the world. We decorated 6 trees, 1 each for Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines/ Coast Guard, 1 yellow for KIA and a Red, White and Blue tree with hundreds of little flags all over it. There was also an Angel dressed all in patriotic watching guard over our troops and Santa was there in his sleigh stacked full of care packages for our troops. Our decorations where such a big success we have already been asked to do it again this year. This year was our 10 anniversary as a chapter, there are only 2 founding members still with us, Linda Samuels and Brenda Muhammed. We are hoping to work on our membership this year and get more Moms involved but most of all we are just excited for what this year has in store for us. Chapter 21 We had 4 members attend the National Convention in Dayton this year. At the end of the convention, Barb Cook was asked to be the National Historian, she did accept the job and was very honored. The chapter also worked at our first golf outing and did very well. Some members will also be attending the Patriot Day Salute on 9-11 in Tiffin Ohio.

8 Chapter 26 Our chapter has visited and attend other chapters meetings so we can see what other chapters are doing, and meeting new BSM sisters. The chapter helped in welcoming home veterans from an honor flight. We helped with the Michael J Holtz foundation golf outing fundraiser. Please mark your calendars for the outing next year as it will be the tenth year for the event. August 19, 2017 at the Emerald Woods Golf course in Columbia Station (about 1- minutes from the Strongsville Mall) not able to golf come for the dinner. Tickets for the steak dinner where only $25.00 this year. Golfers where $80 which included dinner. Lots of wonderful raffle prizes. This year funds went to the Fisher House. Levin's sponsored the supplies for a hot dog stand to raise donations for our chapter over Labor Day weekend. Members of the chapter are looking forward to attending 9/11 area events and the upcoming Gold Star marker dedication. Chapter 57 This photo is of some Blue Mothers hard at work packing troop boxes our chapter has sent over 100 boxes this year. The chapter is growing in number every day and are welcoming new mothers whose sons or daughters are currently on deployment. We gather to support one another and also to send some love inside every troop box.
