2 We are all very lucky to have a place by the lake where we can sit back, relax and not have to deal with a hot time in the city. So while you enjoy the water and nature that surrounds us take time to be thankful for all we have. Enjoy your weekend, avoid the heat and be safe. Some safety tips Loon Survey is Underway. Loons spotted by a join team from MLA and Mississippi Valley Field Naturalists MLA president Rob Bell with Ted Barnicoat and Victoria Miller from MVFN head out to check count the loons on the lake. 3 Get Free Plants and Protect your Waterfront If you interested in free plants and learning how to arrange them on your waterfront to help protect our water check out this new opportunity offered by Watersheds Canada. Learn how to use this new app to design your own waterfront with up to 50 free plants at this special workshop to be held 25 July 2018 from 6:30-8:30 at the Watersheds Canada office in Perth. 5 Subscribe Past Issues Translate Mississippi Lake and the MLA has a rich history that is based on the efforts of many great volunteers of the past and continues today with our dedicated volunteers who all are committed to our collective enjoyment of this jewel we have today. Frank Mills authored a great piece on the history that provides an insight to the past. For more current info history check out this link to the MLA web site. We are thankful to all our volunteers both past and present. Volunteer opportunities- do something new and interesting during your summer at the lake If you would like to get involved just a little bit or a lot, here are some opportunities. Your environment committee is conducting a number of surveys this summer designed to assess the state of our lake and environment. Involvement in any of these undertakings is not time intensive and will give you a chance to get out on the water and enjoy nature while helping the Environment Committee any number of different capacities. If you are interested in any of the following activities, please contact Doreen Donald at environment@mississippilakesassociation.org Tributary water sampling to track the quality of water entering Mississippi Lake. This info will feed the Ecological Modeling project and help track the source of any pollutants into the lake. Invasive species survey monitoring. If you have a boat, canoe or kayak you can help identify, locate invasive aquatic plants and enjoy some quality time on the water. See details in article below. Time commitment half a day. 6 summer. The Boating and Recreation Committee is looking for people interested in helping with mapping the lake hazards. The plan is to more accurately map the lake to better identify potential hazards to navigation. This task will involve working with a sonar system using the MLA boat. If you are interested in helping contact Dave Duncan at boating@mississippilakesassociation.org Administrative Positions. The Board of Directors values the opinions others and welcomes their input. There are currently two positions for which we are actively seeking new involvement. 7 Septic Savvy Workshop Report. On Saturday the 26 th of May I joined some fellow MLA members, and about 50 other folks from lakes around the area, at the Septic Savvy Workshop hosted by the Lake Networking Group. While I thought I understood the principles of effective septic operations this half day event opened my eyes to a number of issues that I had not previously appreciated. Thanks to an informed group of speakers, who covered the issues from all angles, I am much better informed on the importance of maintaining a properly operating septic system and its critical role in the continued provision of safe water for all. Once between surveying July 13-27th and the second Jme between August 18-31s Samples collected will brought back to MVCA and will be put in cold storage (fridge) until analyzed Road Committee Report The new MLA Road Committee last meet on 14 June They have been busy with investigating information sources to guide discussions on issues surrounding liability and insurance as they relate to private roads, and incorporated/non-incorporated road associations. Another issue they have been working on relates to the collection of road dues by non-incorporated road associations, with or without by-laws. This issue can be complicated and a lawyer may be required to navigate the small claims court. For more info follow postings on the MLA web site. The next road association meeting in is scheduled for July 19,2018.
