Great way to start a new year! The September meeting was a full house. You certainly made a good first impression on new members and guests that are considering TWC as a club they want to belong to. Never lose sight of the big picture ladies, our hearts are always open to new ideas, new ways to do something and new members. New members bring new concepts and objectives that can be incorporated into old ways and ideas. Older members bring the values, the standards, the integrity, the technique and methods tried and true. Both are needed and it's why the Mentor Program will be reinstated this year. Sign up to be a Mentor and allow yourself to teach others about your love of TWC. Other ways to help this year will be setting up tables on Tuesday or serving on Wednesday, laundering napkins and tablecloths and decorating the tables for the luncheons. The lunch from our Caterer Sue Damsky was a delicious event. The dessert was made by Barbara Freeman and the perfect ending. Thanks to Kathleen our friends from Torrance Transit visited us and I got the feeling they enjoyed our July bus trip as much as we did. I hope we can get another trip planned in the next month or so. OCTOBER 2017 NEWSLETTER 1 The clubhouse management committee has made some changes and we are pleased with our new manager/event planner/caterer Richard Brice and his R Catering Affairs team. One last thing I want to mention, if you vote Aye at the meetings to an event or program, it means, YES, I supported this motion I should attend or donate to the cause. If you don't like the idea or event, remember it was voted on by the majority and it means you are agreeing to be there or send a contribution. All our fundraising is important to maintain our ideals as a tax-free organization, make money and give to worthy causes. Anxious to see you in October, wear a mask or costume, a crazy hat or crazy something. Make it festive and fun! October is also Earthquake Preparedness Month be sure you have a kit at home in case of an earthquake or disaster. Keep it current and know where you put it. Practice drills with family members. Here s the schedule for the different ART Chairman: Creative Writing will be due at the District Meeting on January 19th and our Chairman is Marilyn Keller. She will have all the information soon. The Crafts Contest will be February 23rd and our Chairman is Bette Herbst. The Art and Photography Contests are both on March 16th and the Art Chairman is Lou Schumacher and the Photography Chairman is Joan Earhart. The Music Chairman is Char Kyes and I don t have the date for this event. We have lots of talented ladies in our club so get busy creating something for one or more of these contests! A SAVE THE DATE for Tuesday, January 23, Marina District is holding a fundraiser BUS TRIP to Historic Main Street in Ventura. Lots of fun shops and restaurants will be open for your enjoyment and I m sure we can find some ice cream. So, save the date and ask your friends to join in on this fun bus trip!! Marina District President, Gina, reported that over 100 million trees have been lost this year. So, let s not forget to contribute our pennies to Pennies for Pines. Don t forget to continue saving your hours and dollars for our reports which will be due in January. I will have forms ready at the meeting. If you aren t sure where to report something just put it down anywhere and I ll make sure it gets counted. 3 HELPING HANDS Marilyn Keller Helping Hands is the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 10:00-12:00 AM. We would like everyone to come. New Club Members are invited to come & see what we do and join in. It is such a rewarding way to spend 2 hours a Month. There will be many Cuddle Blankets (Quilts) to tie, Teddy Bears to stuff & put eyes on and Christmas Balls to make for the Bazaar in November & and December anything else you may want to work on. Most of all we will share our friendships. Calling all Readers Join Our Newest Program ESO (Epsilon Sigma Omicron) Information on how to join and earn awards for your Club and yourself while doing what you like, reading books. There will be information packets at the September meeting. The list of books and report forms will be available at that time. Read at your own pace and receive awards. Also this month is our fundraiser October 28th "Beach Party", adopt a dog month, national bake and decorate month and breast cancer awareness month. Three new members were presented at our general meeting in September: Lemor Warzman, Carolyn Pohlner and Brenda Holcomb. Welcome! Mary Alessandra-Cook will be presented at the October meeting. Remember to bring potential new members each month as our club continues to grow. When you were a new member, wouldn't it be nice to be assigned a mentor to help you with questions about the club through the year. With the Mentor program you could have made a new friend with years of experience with the club. We will have a sign-up sheet again at the October meeting and look forward to launching this program. Our Mentor training session has been changed to Monday, October 23rd 10;30 at the clubhouse. Happy Halloween- hope you get more treats than tricks! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!! 4 FALL FUNDRAISER Beach Party Fundraiser for the Fisher House! If you haven t signed up for the Beach Party Fundraiser there is still time. We are gathering raffle prizes and game prizes so you don t want to miss out on all the fun! The Fisher House really needs your help. They make housing available for family members of the military who are in the VA hospital. It helps them to stay close by and give support to their family member! Please sign up and enjoy the afternoon with your TWC friends while we make money to help the military. The lunch will be fried chicken, potato salad, baked beans and make your own sundaes! If you can t attend but want to contribute to this worthy cause please give your donation to our Treasurer, Mary Linn. Holiday Bazaar Ladies, it's that time again! At the November and December meetings we will be selling homemade and commercial items at our annual Holiday Bazaar. If you sew or knit: quilts, comforters, tablecloths, aprons and potholders all sell well. If you cook or bake: cookies, candies, preserves, soups and applesauce are popular. Are you a crafter? Scarves, pins and greeting cards might be your contribution. Other favorites include: kitchen scrubbers and items such as wreaths, ornaments or table top decorations. You are only limited by your imagination. Just a couple reminders: items should be new. Used items and those suitable for regifting should be saved for the Rummage Sale in January. The TWC Scholarship Fund benefits from the money raised. KITCHEN DUTY CHANGES Sharon Broadbent Set-up on Tuesday, October 3 at 9:30 am: We will begin collecting items on the Tuesday before the November 1 meeting, 9:30-11:00. 5 Lost and Found Keys with what appears to be a gold pill box found at curb after September meeting WOMEN S HISTORY LEE LARGE AMAZING AMERICAN WOMEN FRANCIS PERKINS, Women have been actively involved in American politics from the onset of our country but seldom got the credit for their efforts. As a graduate of Mt. Holyoke College Francis Perkins had taken a course that surveyed working conditions in local factories and she decided it would be her life s work to improve them. After teaching school in Chicago where she saw poor conditions there also she moved to New York and earned a master s degree in Sociology at Columbia University. In Albany, she lobbied for the 54-hour work week for women and it passed. When she witnessed the tragic fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York that killed 146 people she managed to become secretary of the Committee on Safety for the City of New York. After that, at a time when women did not have the right to vote, she was appointed to the New York State Industrial Commission, the best paid most influential post held by a woman in the nation. Under Franklin D. Roosevelt she was appointed Secretary of Labor, the first female cabinet member in American history. The press underplayed her achievements and stressed her failures. She packaged together unemployment insurance, old age pensions and aid to children in the Social Security Act of She held her cabinet post for all four terms of FDR s presidency and had many more triumphs. She knew how to get things done. 5
