1 LOS CERRITOS DISTRICT BULLETIN Member of General Federation of Women s Clubs California Federation of Women s Clubs Barbee Heiny, President You ll Never Walk Alone with Federation LIX Volume 3 November 2016 Paulina Selene Jones, Editor LosCerritosEditor@gmail.com Gerda Trutzl, Paper Mailing Barbee Heiny, ing, Webmaster A Message from the President: The October Council was well attended and the speakers were all excellent, giving a lot of information to take to our clubs for Membership and Leadership. Thanks to Woman s Club of Bellflower for hosting the delicious lunch. And thanks to the Woman s Club of Artesia-Cerritos for decorating the tables. Several of us were guests of the South Gate Women s Club Reciprocity luncheon on October 12 and enjoyed the costumes some wore for Halloween. We were served a great lunch and the musical entertainment was absolutely hilarious and enjoyed by all. President Robbie Hicklin and 1 st Vice President Bobbie Thompson made their guests feel very welcome and gave each a cute Halloween jack-o-lantern. The Lakewood Reciprocity was very entertaining with a lot of things to buy or win. The food was outstanding as always and the entertainment was wonderful. Thank you Lakewood. The November 14 th District Meeting will be followed by a Report Writing Workshop. Encourage your club chairmen to attend; and, of course, all District chairmen should attend. It will make your life so much easier when it comes to writing those Club Reports and judging and writing reports for State. Please plan to also stay and enjoy lunch and attend Dean Jane Hendrick s Report Writing Workshop. See you there. Don t forget to support the Norwalk Woman s Club with your help for the Gifts for Giving. Betty Lou Larsen will give us lots of dates to pick from to help. Pick one or more days and come join many of our clubs that help. Need more information? Call Betty Lou. All Club Members, please remember, you are all welcome to attend the Los Cerritos District Meetings. Sign up through your club for events where lunch is served. 4 Norwalk Woman s Club DEAN S MESSAGE The Norwalk Woman s Club (NWC) is actively engaged in a wide array of projects as are all other GFWC/CFWC Women s Clubs. This list includes scholarships, art, education, community, and international projects. This year we were able to establish a Cerritos College scholarship for a returning veteran in addition to our previously established scholarships. We continue to support our libraries and local schools with book donations. Our members actively participate in the library book sales which are held in April and November. Our Literature group continues to donate books and magazines to the Long Beach Veterans Hospital. This year our club supported the Norwalk Food Bank with food donations. We also provided snacks for the patients in the Forensic Unit at Metropolitan State Hospital. As the Christmas Holiday Season is approaching, our attention is focused on our Gifts for Giving project at Metropolitan State Hospital. We started work on this program in We work with personnel at Metropolitan State Hospital and provide gifts for the patients to send to their families and friends at Christmas time. Other Women s Clubs and local community organizations join us in buying, making, donating, and wrapping gifts. The dates for this year are November 28 & 29th and December 5th & 6th. This is how Gifts for Giving works: Volunteers go to the Units. Patients are presented with an array of gifts and make their selections. The gifts are wrapped in Christmas paper, then boxed for shipping, wrapped in brown paper, and addressed. The hospital does the mailing. Last year approximately 390 gifts were wrapped and shipped. Both patients and staff really appreciate this event. Many patients have been hospitalized for months and are somewhat isolated from people outside of the hospital. The gifts allow the patients to experience a positive connection with their families and friends. Being able to send a gift for the Christmas Holiday is a way of the patients to reach out to families and friends and participate in the Season. Those of us who participate in these activities have a great time. We work very hard but we laugh a lot and get a very big job done. One of the added benefits is to meet and get acquainted with women in other clubs and our community. We now see familiar faces when we participate in district or state events. We also have an opportunity to renew and enhance friendships made at Gifts for Giving. Kathy Cook, Dean Editor s Note There are few things as joyful as spending time with family and friends for the holidays. Thanksgiving is the beginning of the season, not just of the festivities, but of actively thinking about how we can make our loved ones lives better. As a part of the GFWC, though, we have a unique opportunity to extend our loving intentions to those we do not know personally. We as a district are so active in giving to lives of those who need help in our communities. This is only one reason why I am so grateful to be a representative of the GFWC, CFWC, LCD and the Woman s Club of Bellflower. Sincerely, Paulina Selene Jones Try coloring or shading the drawing on the next page.
