4 GOODBYES AND HELLOES Our wonderful Emergency Card Co-ordinator; Linda McIndoe left in March this year to spend more time with her family after 9 and half years working for Carers Services. Many of you will have spoken with her over the years when completing the Emergency Card, and she was always a welcoming, smiling face at drop ins. She is very much missed by all the team. CARERS EMERGENCY CARD If you are looking after someone regularly you may worry about what will happen if you are taken ill, or are in an accident or similar emergency. How will you be able to ensure that the person you care for will not be left without support? The Carers Emergency Card is designed to give carers peace of mind in such circumstances. The card provides you, the carer, and the person you care for with access to a rapid message handling service, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The scheme was previously provided by Carecall. The scheme is now provided by Wired Adult and Young Carers Services, Warrington Borough Council and the Primary Care Trust. Over the coming months carers who have previously been issued an Emergency Card will be contacted in order to update our records and ensure your emergency plan has been reviewed. You will then be issued with a NEW Emergency Card in the meantime you can continue to use the Carecall Emergency Card with the same guaranteed service until notified to do otherwise. STAFF PROFILES Hello, my name is...the Editor? I have been with Carers Services for 3 years and have edited the Carers Newsletter for two years and thoroughly enjoyed getting as much information out to you all as possible. My previous experience includes over 30 years in IT and administration (giving my age away a bit there!). I found my way to Warrington Carers after administration temping for six months and was then offered a full time post, which eventually included editing the newsletter. I enjoy every day at work meeting wonderful people in sometimes difficult and challenging situations, and work with an amazing team. I am carer to my Mum and try and spend any free time with my family and much valued friends. CARERS U-KNITTED FUNDRAISING QUILT Our wonderful Fundraising Craft Group; Carers U-knitted (gedditt!!), put their amazing skills to good use when they took a trip to Noddfa, Penmaenmawr, North Wales in April and produced the land/sea/sky-scape quilt pictured. Susan, Sue, Catia, Diane, Audrey, Irene and Jane worked tirelessly for 3 days to produce the quilt, which will be auctioned to raise money for Noddfa. Warrington Carers take regular day trips to Noddfa, a beautiful, tranquil retreat in North Wales see events for the next organised trip. If you would like to join the Craft Group, they meet every Wednesday between 10.00am-2.00pm at 86 Sankey Street, please come along. 4

5 FREE LEARNING FOR CARERS Warrington Borough Council has successfully secured funding from Skills for Care to assist with the training of unpaid carers. Workshops will take place at 86 Sankey Street and Outreach venues; Lymm and Fearnhead to enable as many carers as possible to attend. DEMENTIA AWARENESS WORKSHOP Including Dementia Awareness, Communication and interaction with individuals who have dementia PLUS SONAS session this workshop was first held in March and we have booked four more sessions at 86 Sankey Street due to it s success. Monday 10th June 11.00am 3.00pm Monday 17th June 11.00am 3.00pm Friday 21st June 11.00am 3.00pm Friday 28th June 11.00am 3.00pm Please contact the Centre to book your place on or FREEphone For more detailed information please contact Pauline Blyth, Workforce Development Officer on POSITIVE THOUGHTS WORKSHOP 7 week programme please come along on the Taster Day on Tuesday 11 June when the next dates will be announced and you can sign up to attend. The above courses are FREE to carers, but as with most things in life, someone has to pay. If you book a place but due to unforeseen circumstances are unable to attend, PLEASE contact The Centre, we may have a waiting list of carers who can attend in your place, if you can t make a course you are booked on and don t notify us, lack of attendance may jeopardise the funding for future courses. Thank you. Some people are abusive to others just because they are different. A hate crime is harassment on the grounds of race, religion, disability (including learning disability) or being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Hate crime abuse can be verbal name calling or more physical and can happen anywhere whether on the bus, in school, at the shops or at home. Harassment can be a one off or persistent and repeated, but any hate crime should never be ignored. The Warrington Hate Crime Partnership brings together the police, council, schools, community groups and other organisations and aims to reduce hate crime and incidents, so everyone feels safe. If the person you care for suffers any abuse, we would like to ask you, as a carer, to encourage him or her to report it, or you can report it on their behalf. The police take all incidents seriously. Only if we know about it can we do something about it. HATE CRIME AND ABUSE To report an incident: ring 999 in an emergency ring the non-emergency police number on 101 report it at the Warrington Disability Partnership or other group that is a community reporting centre, or report it online at Find out more about hate crime and how Warrington Hate Crime Partnership plans to stamp it out at 5
