Lunch begins promptly at 11:30 am, and the meeting will begin at 12 pm V o l u m e # 3 0, N o. 1 J a n u a r y, A New Year Brings Changes! As most of you have heard by now, we are bringing a few changes to the Norfolk Sports Club in In January, our meetings will be held at Dave & Busters inside Lynnhaven Mall. Dave & Busters is located on the backside of Dick s Sporting Goods with an outside entrance, making it possible to enter without going inside the mall itself! Another slight change is our luncheon time! Lunch will now be served at 11:30 am, with meetings beginning promptly at noon. The board made the decision to push up the luncheon time to hopefully afford more members to attend. Shorter luncheons equals less time to take off from work! We hope you will support both of these changes! On Monday, January 5th, 2015 the NSC will have Sam Allen as our luncheon speaker. Mr. Allen played baseball in the legendary Negro League. He played first with the Kansas City Monarchs in In 1958, he played with the Raleigh Tigers, and in 1959 he joined the Memphis Red Sox roster. In 1960, Mr. Allen was assigned to the 82nd Airborne U.S. Army 2nd 504th Division. He played ball for the Fort Bragg Baseball team and trained hard to play for the football team as well. Mr. Allen is one of 59 players acknowledged and recognized in the NLB Living Legend Program. Please RSVP to the NSC office if you plan to attend! On Monday, January 19th, 2015 the NSC will have Earnest Byner as our speaker. Mr. Byner began is football career as a fullback at East Carolina University. He was drafted in the tenth round by the Cleveland Browns in 1984, where he remained until In 1989 he was traded to the Redskins, where he caught a second quarter touchdown pass in Super Bowl XXVI. His many accomplishments with the Redskins earned him a position as one of the top 70 Redskins. Mr. Byner then returned to the Cleveland Browns, and later played for the Baltimore Ravens. Mr. Byner has enjoyed a career in front office operations, as well as coaching. This will be an evening meeting! Dinner cost is $20 for members and $25 for guests. The NSC would like to invite all to participate in a social hour beginning at 5 pm, held outside of the Dave & Busters meeting room. The buffet dinner will begin at 6 pm, and our meeting will begin at 6:45 p.m. If you plan to attend, please RSVP through the NSC office! Come out and support the NSC!

Come see your Board at work! Special get well wishes to: Jack Everton Paula Hoffower Roger Kilb Letter from your President... Letter from the President I hope everyone has a joyful, blessed holiday season. As a new year begins, thoughts of renewal, hope, resolutions and change come to mind. Our club has undergone a lot of changes over the past year. Alton Forbes has done an outstanding job leading the Norfolk Sports Club over the last year. Alton and the board made some tough decisions to get our club back on track to financial stability and to expand the reach of the club to new areas. As your incoming president, I hope to continue the evolution of the Norfolk Sports Club into a modern organization reaching new audiences, while honoring the long standing traditions of our club. I believe it is imperative for any organization, business or civic, to continue to evolve and adapt to not only survive but to see real growth. Meetings with the board and the long range planning committee over the past few months have echoed that sentiment. One of the most noticeable changes coming next year will be our meeting location. The board issued a mandate in November that the club find a new venue to meet. The board felt that a new venue was necessary to reach new members and help the club grow. As you probably know by now, the first two meetings in January will be held at Dave and Busters in Virginia Beach. The board will evaluate the success of the location change and decide on future meeting locations. I know this is a major change and it was not a decision reached without long discussion. This was a board decision to try and bring a fresh new feel to the club and hopefully new members. This will be an ongoing process that will be evaluated as the year progresses. Through some changes and enhancements to our club, I hope to see a noticeable growth in membership and participation this year. I would like to share a few items that I hope to implement with the help of the board and club members over the next year. First, I want to make sure that every member of the Norfolk Sports Club knows how important they are to the life of our organization. I would like to have more members involved in the various opportunities to serve. Anyone who wants to help in meetings, activities, sponsorships, leadership, outings, the Jamboree or has a completely new idea contact me and I will make sure we find a place for you. Second, board members will be given specific duties and assignments. I believe it is imperative for the leadership of the club to have direction in order to see success. Third, I would like for the Norfolk Sports Club to be more involved in our community as a whole. Showing who we are and what we stand for is important. I hope we can find events to rally behind to build club comradery as well as serve our community. I would like to form a new committee to explore possible events and fundraisers we can run or participate in. Fourth, I would like to have a new committee dedicated to reaching out to the business community and sharing our cause with them. Our hope is to have yearly corporate sponsors. Fifth, if people don t know who we are or what we do, then how do we expect the club to grow or survive into the future? I have formed an advertising/pr committee to look into getting the word out about our club and events. The committee will look into advertising our club as well as updating our website capabilities. These are just a few items that I would like to see implemented over the next year. I know that with change come some growing pains. Please continue to support the Norfolk Sports Club as it evolves. I d like to challenge anyone who is a member of this club to step forward and get involved with the inner workings of our organization. Help us to grow your club and reach out to do the most we can for our community. If you have an idea, please share it. I m always willing to listen. If you want to share your talents let me know. We will find a place for you to serve. I m excited to see where the Norfolk Sports Club can grow this year and on into the future. Respectfully, Bryce Burton
3 V o l u m e # 3 0, N o. 1 January s Member Spotlight. James Doty P a g e 3 Each month in 2015 the Sportsline will spotlight a member so you may get to know them better! James R. Doty Jr. is a veteran of the hospitality industry with over 20 years experience in customer service. Growing up locally in Norfolk, James has cemented his roots in the Hampton Roads Community with strong ties to family and friends in the area. As a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and Old Dominion University, customer service is something that he has always known. Whether it s working in the fast food industry or as an intern for a financial advisor, working with customers and the public has always been his passion. After graduating from ODU, James true calling came in 2000 taking an entry level position in the hotel industry. Ever since that first hotel job, he seems to have found niche. Over the next 14 years he has held numerous positions in the hotel industry; with each position growing more challenging and rewarding than the last. He currently holds the title of Corporate & Sports Sales Manager for the Marriott Chesapeake Hotel. James current focus includes working on the 2015 AAU Junior Olympics, coming to the region in July, and more importantly spending time with his wife and newborn son. James has been elected to the 2015 NSC Board of Directors, and is also serving on the Strategic Planning Committee. If you would like to contact James, he can be reached at james.doty@crestlinehotels.com.
