1 CONSTITUTION & BEST PRACTICES 1 The mission of M.A.C.R.O. Network is to provide students with an opportunity to gain knowledge through a professional network that focuses on the role of leaders, administrators, and advocates in the social work community. Officer Position Descriptions: Director: The objective of the director position is to oversee the organization s progress, to preside over meetings, to maintain faculty liaison/student communication, responsible for registering organization with Center for Student Involvement Assistant Director: Assists Director in duties, also responsible for registering organization with Center for Student Involvement, registering events with Center for Student Involvement, and securing funding for events as needed Secretary: Record meeting minutes, set meeting dates/times, reserve locations for events/meetings, communicate with other student organizations Professional Development Coordinator: Focuses on post graduate opportunities, events, and defining MACRO, serves as primary contact for events, such as Day in the Life of a Macro SW, Witness to Innocence, etc, manages events and delegates responsibilities to other officers. Financial Advisor: Collects dues, takes care of reimbursements and paperwork for the University. Manages University bank account procedures. Public Relations Coordinator: The Public Relations Coordinator is responsible for marketing the organization to the public. Creating flyers, posting events on the MACRO Facebook page, coordinating with Connease Warren (UH GCSW Communications Director) about posting events/happenings on the UH GCSW Facebook page, and maintaining the MACRO Network Bulletin Board in the Student Lounge are the major duties. Recruiter/Social Liaison: The objective of this position is twofold: To recruit new members into the MACRO Network Organization as well as attempt to build coalitions with other organizations in the GCSW. Primary goals: To get word out about MACRO Network at GCSW functions which include GCSW orientation as well as other organization s meetings (if allowed). Coordinate with leaders of other organizations to build overall camaraderie for the college. I envision some kind of social event/mixer where two or more of the GCSW organizations come together to brainstorm about ways to make things more inclusive of every one each long semester and possibly in the summer. We are all social workers looking to promote best practices in the profession; our specializations should not limit our networking capabilities. Once we educate those unfamiliar with MACRO social work and let them know how clinical practice works in sync with our own goals I feel we can get more members.

2 MACRO Events and Activities 2 NEW STUDENT WELCOME RECEPTION (August): We set up a booth with tri-fold board, registration information, and flyers for our first MACRO Network meeting of the semester to recruit incoming students. FOUNDATION DAY BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER (August): On the first 2 days of foundation, MACRO held a breakfast bake sale for incoming students. Bring Tri-fold board and be prepared to speak with Foundation students about MACRO Student Network. DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MACRO SOCIAL WORKER (Fall): Location: University of Houston Social Work Building Time 9:00 AM 2:00 PM Program Goals: To educate students on the various roles of Macro Social Workers. To develop awareness of different settings Macro Social Workers work in. To connect Macro social work students & peers with practicing MACRO Social Workers. Description: The Day in the Life of a Macro Social Worker event is a day dedicated to building student awareness of different career options as a MACRO Social Worker. The day will consist of three panel sessions focusing on the different areas of Macro Social Work practice: Community, Administration, and Policy. Each panel will have 3-4 Professional Macro Social Workers presenting a brief discussion of a day in his/her life to educate and inspire students to the exciting opportunities in Macro Social Work. A NASW presentation, followed by a networking lunch with the speakers, will be included. Sponsorship: Lunch 50 Subway Box Lunches /$5.50 per box provided by NASW TX. Materials (flyers/letters/ s) for the conference are located in the Dropbox. Potential presenters were ed with a Speaker Invitation and Agenda. o Replied with a 'thank you' to all responses in a prompt manner advising of information to be forthcoming. MACRO Student members marketed the event and made presentations to: UH- Downtown, UH-Clear Lake, UH-Central, TSU & PVAMU Informational Letter (follow-up): Policy, Administrative and Community Requested bio and pic once all presenters were confirmed Finally, ed all participating speakers a Digital thank you from Punchbowl: Also ed student participants resource list provided by one of the speakers. STUDENT DAY AT THE LEGISLATURE (spring): This trip is held every other year during the Interim of the legislative session. Social Work students across the state of Texas come together and embrace and promote

3 3 the importance of advocacy. Students from each school are given the platform to discuss achievements, projects and efforts that they have made to create change. Students are also able to march to the capitol and listen or give a speech asking onlookers to support a cause, educate others on a policy that is potentially harmful to social services, social justice or the overall wellbeing of human self-determination. After the March, rally and speeches, students will have the opportunity to meet with a Representative or Senator and discuss issues, policies or projects that they deem important. Most likely it will be the assistant to the legislator. These meeting should be planned out prior to the event. In order to do this student will identify their reps. (which can be found here: Once this is determined a MACRO Network organizer or a student volunteer will contact the legislators office to schedule the appointments in advance. Coordinating Event 1. Determine and confirm the date, times and student fee for event. This is usually defined by a state organization and the information is provided to the Dean. 2. Identify interested students by posting flyers, sending s to professors and to Jamie Parker so that she may send out a mass to the GCSW student body. 3. Create a Google excel spreadsheet in which students interested in trip can be recorded. This is a great way to manage information. (example: wnf9stzh2bzr6ugridgc) 4. Send confirmation s to students interested in trip. Sample to send to prospective attendees: Hello All, Thank you again for signing up and being apart of a wonderful day at the Legislature DATE. Attached to this you will find a participation information sheet and the agenda for the day. There is a $12 fee for students, which are due by March 1st (checks or money order only). Please make checks/money order payable to UH GCSW and in the optional memo line write: Student Day at the Legislature. You must turn-in your $12.00 registration fee to Dean Colby's Executive Assistant, Sonia Ewing (Dean's office 2nd Floor) or to Jamie Parker (Advising office 2nd floor) by March 1st. Transportation The Dean's office will be providing transportation. Departure from University of Houston campus (Lot 16B) at 5:30am, Tuesday morning, and returning approximately by 6pm. Food A continental breakfast is scheduled in Austin for 8:30 a.m., however, we might not arrive in time. Please feel free to bring snacks for the trip. Lunch is on our own. However, there is a designated cafe where students can purchase food. Legislative Visit

4 4 Legislative visits will be coordinated for 1:00-3:00 p.m. Those visits are being coordinated by M.A.C.R.O. Student Organization. If you would like to visit your own representative, please feel free to let us know. Make sure that Jamie Parker or a Student Affairs advisor has access to this information. This is critical to know how vans or buses will be needed for transportation. *All transportation needs and reservations will be handled through the Deans and Student affairs office. 6. Provide time to find a faculty member (2 would be ideal) who can attend the trip and also prep the students on effective policy and advocacy at the state level. Faculty member can also help debrief after the event to get an idea the overall experiences of the students and their feelings on meeting with a legislator or staff member. ** Main focus is to promote the trip, recruit attendees, and work with student affairs and faculty to get transportation and a faculty attendee. It is important to talk with prospective students on what issues they are interested and making sure that they are able to speak at the rally and the legislative office sessions. The Event Day 1. It is important that on the day of the event all students are ready and accounted for as early as possible (5:30am) to be in Austin by 8 or 9am. However, please contact Student Day at the Legislature coordinator beforehand to inform them that GCSW will be in attendance along with the name of the faculty member present. This is important because at the start of the event the speakers will do a roll call and shout-out all attending schools. 2. Dean Colby has stated that the day of the event the GCSW should exemplify professionalism and business casual attire is preferred. (Some schools make T- shirts to show school pride. A creative way to also engage in school pride is with buttons, banners, flags etc.) *Please inform attendees to wear comfortable shoes. 3. Breakfast is usually provided at the event however providing snacks to students on the ride to Austin would be beneficial. 4. All students should be provided with a map and an outline of the day and the times and locations of the legislative office meetings. 5. Lunch is available in the Capitol in the cafeteria and students can eat their or break to go to local restaurants in the area. **Designated meeting times and areas should be clearly defined.

5 5 6. It is encouraged that students document their experience with videos and pictures so that it can be promoted on the GCSW website as well as the YouTube channel. Send all media, clips, photos and video to the Communications Manager Connease Warren 7. After the event students will talk to other students and faculty to discuss their experiences. This information is very beneficial to improving the trip for the following year. SOCIAL EVENTS: HOLIDAY PARTY: Celebrate the end of the Fall semester and to invite new prospective MACRO Network members. HAPPY HOURS: MACRO Network hosts a series of happy hours intended to allow members to socialize with each other and with members of the macro community. SERVICE PROJECT: MACRO Network participates in a service project each November or December. The project is developed by the current officers. ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION Registration with Center for Student Involvement Must attend one registration session in the spring of each school year CSI must have at least three officers/members listed with (PeopleSoft number, phone number, address, and .) Suggested officers to register with CSI are Director, Financial Advisor & Assistant Director. Organization must be registered in order to receive back account through Woodforest bank Organization receives mail box through the CSI Organization is eligible for funding for on campus events & for conference traveling expenses. (Campus Events up to $400.00/Conference up to $ ) Only officers listed with CSI are allowed to submit paperwork for room reservations and funding. Facebook- This FB page is dedicated to showcasing MACRO network events and connecting with student that are interested in the objectives of MACRO social work. All officers and members should like/subscribe to FB account and officers will be added as Admins. There should be more of an effort to post local and national issues impacting individuals, community, organizations and societies. Hopefully creating awareness and an increase in audience participation.

6 6 FB could create a potential to post blog-style posts that discuss our journeys as macro students. Allowing page followers to share their experiences as well. Only officers listed on the memorandum may be listed on the bank account to write checks and get bank account information.
