NEWS April 1, 2017 Issue 10 NPO Our VALUE for the month is FAITH. When we chose this value in our yearly planning, we did not realise how prophetic it would be. We believe that FAMSA BLOEMFONTEIN is going from strength to strength, despite the many challenges we face. Thank you for your support to our organization, and the lovely feedback we have received about our newsletter. Quote of the month:

Word from our Director! Someone recently told me that he looks up to people like me. People who stay positive and keep on smiling, no matter what happens. He also said that it worries him if people like me reach a point of despair, because if strong people give up the fight and lose faith, what hope is there for him? According to Dr. Brené Brown, we associate vulnerability with emotions we want to avoid such as fear, shame, and uncertainty. Yet we too often lose sight of the fact that vulnerability is also the birthplace of joy, belonging, creativity, authenticity, and love. I would like to encourage you that it is OK to admit that you are at your lowest, and struggling. Surrender control. See a therapist, a counsellor, a mentor if you need to. Ingrid Bell Dare to drop that armour that protects you from feeling vulnerable. Have the courage to be imperfect. Have compassion and be kind to yourself and others! Have faith and don t give up! Vulnerability means you are human, not weak. For inspiration, have a look at The Power of Vulnerability Teachings on Authenticity, Connection and Courage by Dr. Brené Brown FAMSA Builds Relationships Non Profit Organisation Registration No.: NPO

OUR Services FAMSA Bloemfontein highlights JAN- MARCH 2017: FAMSA Bloemfontein started off the New Year with enthusiasm and effort, and we are still going strong. Some of the highlights at the end of our first quarter include: The Life skills prevention & counselling programme for children and families at ATANG school is running smoothly, despite challenges (like rain damage) at the Container. We started a counselling service at Brandwag Primary School Various networking opportunities to market our services to other service providers The following number of families, children or individuals received counselling services: Victims of Crime/Violence Perpetrators Programme Trauma Counselling Child assessments & therapy Parenting Guidance Mediation Family counselling Marriage Counselling Individual Counselling Therapeutic services FAMSA Builds Relationships Non Profit Organisation Registration No.: NPO

OUR FeatureChildren and Grief Children who experience loss Grief is a normal and expected reaction to loss. The absence of it is the abnormal. Adults and children grieve differently. The intense emotional and behavioural expressions of bereavement are not continuous in children. Childhood grief follows a developmental process that continues over time. Children will revisit the loss repeatedly; especially during significant life events e.g. birthdays. Childhood grief apply to the different stages of development although each child s grief is unique. Several factors can influence the child s grief e.g. age, personality, previous experience with loss or death, relationships, stability of the family after the loss, etc. Age Death Perception <3 Cannot feel loss, rather absence no understanding 3-5 Temporary & reversible 6-8 Clearer understand permanency, Concrete thinking Happens to Others not me 9-11 Death is final. May not like to talk about dead person. masking effect I cry alone in my room I am expected to be strong Adult-like grief Emotions less volatile, greater self-awareness Issues Absorb carer s emotions Separation anxiety, Nightmares, Regression Demanding, Stubborn, Clingy, Conflict with peers, Regression, Parent mourned as Hero Avoid emotional expression. Anxiety over death, Fear rejection, being different from peers Anger, Withdrawal, Avoid feelings, Impulsive, Fear public emotional display & replacement Sadness, Despair, Longing, Worry, Contemplate future losses Needs of the Child Routine, Hugs, Love, Consistency Constant caring, Routine, Basic needs met, Love Mastery through constant information and care. Preparation for separation. Information, Compassionate understanding Understand developmental dilemma, Limit setting, Information about grief, Ideas & Rituals Recognise intensity of grief, Education around grieving process, Validation, Space, compassion and support How can you help a grieving child? Not all children need counselling, they need love, care and compassion. If you listen, observe and respond with words or a gentle smile, you will be doing exactly what is needed.

OUR Fundraising Curious as to how FAMSA gets funds to render its services? NPO s or charity organisations are not corporate businesses. Their aim is to do good, not to make a profit. However, unless they operate in a business-like manner, they will be letting down the huge numbers of people they serve and they will not be able to sustain their service rendering. When it comes to funds, FAMSA BLOEMFONTEIN believes in transparency, accountability, sound financial management, and diversifying our income base through various means. We are however still dependent on subsidies from Department of Social Development (DSD) and funds from NLC (National Lottery Commission), like many other NGO s. Although we value our partnership with DSD, we have not had any feedback regarding financial support for April March We are still awaiting the outcome of our 2015 NLC application. According to NLC their budget for the 2016/2017 year has been depleted. Our application is however still under consideration and will be adjudicated in the new financial year. NON- MISSION FUNDING PROJECT FUNDING NLC / LOTTO Small/Medium Grants PHILAN- THROPIC INCOME MISSION RELATED INCOME DSD SUBSIDIES Fees for services CPD Trainings THANK YOU!! to AM Marketing who started to raise funds for us through telemarketing, from middle March Please HAVE FAITH and where possible SUPPORT OUR CAUSE!
