2 Page 2 Commodore s Report James F. Kalec We had our annual spring meeting on Tuesday, May 23rd and I am delighted that 74 members were in attendance. This is your club and your input and the feedback was appreciated. I thank all the BLC Board of Directors who contributed with a presentation about their committee s efforts on behalf of the BLC. The Commodore s Ball was held on Saturday, May 13th and 162 people were in attendance. I personally thank PC Bob De Glopper and his wife Karen, Mike and Judy Noon, Doug and Janet Saltzman, Ed and Janet Wirth, Ken Pelletier and Janine Little and the host couple of Greg and PC Rhonda Ried. A special shout out goes to my son, James Kalec Junior, whose standing in our last will and testament will be adjusted ever so slightly. The Buffalo Launch Club has a rich history and the future looks very promising. The renovated portico, new charbroiler and the back-bar cooler have been significant upgrades for the Buffalo Launch Club. The tennis court will be operational again in late May and pickleball will be introduced to the club at that time. We have a great summer planned with price performer parties, Castaway Saturdays, and cruises. I thank PC Rhonda Ried and Director Ken Pelletier for bringing in 22 new members to the BLC. Their tireless efforts are helping us to achieve our goal of 25 new members in Our work is not done. We need to retain new members. As VC John Tommasulo stated at the Spring Meeting, please reach out to new members who have a flag on their table. We were all once new members and reaching out to them is an important first step in retaining and embracing our new members. Flag raising was held on Sunday, May 21st. Even though we were inside the turnout was spectacular. The highlight of the day was granting Life Membership to two individuals who exemplify what a Life Member is. Remember, Life Membership is granted to those whose actions have been beyond those expected of a typical member. Their continuous, active participation in the affairs of the Buffalo Launch Club, including personal time/resources to the betterment of the BLC, including recruitment of new members is second to no one. These men have consistently demonstrated their commitment by serving on an average of four committees each year over the past 15 years. I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the tireless efforts of the Entertainment Committee. We had a great Valentine s Day Party, with 110 people in attendance and that was followed by the Ice Breaker/Nerds Party on Saturday, April 29th where we had 250 people in attendance. My thanks go out to Laura Mason, Janine Little, VC John Tommasulo and Rear Commodore Carl Leinweber and his wife Sandy for their efforts in coordinating this high-octane event. We have the PC Hot Dog Roast on Saturday, May 27th, the Spring Cruise June 2nd June 4th in Point Abino, Ontario and the Rockin on the River Party on Friday, June 9th. We have seven Castaway Saturday events in the summer of 2017 featuring some of the best acts in Buffalo, including Mike Nugent who performed so brilliantly at the Commodore s Ball. 4 Page 4 General Manager s Report Timothy Pike, CCM I am sad to report the passing of member Maria Jankiewicz s Mom. Mr. and Mrs. Jankiewicz asked that I share with the membership of her passing arrangements that will be at the convenience of the family. What a crazy spring season we have had. All excitement about the lake not freezing, no ice on the river had us all feeling great things about the season. Then the rain and the cold hit and really hasn t let up yet. While we have had some patches of nice days, they have been hard to plan around. We know April was the rainiest on record and May was close to our record. This has impacted everything, from our business volume, to our events, delaying the pickleball / tennis rehab, swimming pool operations, mowing services, spraying services, availability of marinas putting boats in the water, service work on boats, everything and I can go on. Let s hope that June is nowhere near this. Thank you to those that attended the Spring Meeting to hear the affairs of the Club. Please remember my words of getting to know your fellow member and positivity. Thank you to the committees for our Memorial Day weekend events. We couldn t have done it without your help. Our PC Hot Dog roast chaired by the past commodores of the Club was a great success. Everyone enjoyed the comradery of hot dogs and draft beer. Family Day was a blast. We started off the week with a 100% chance of rain and thunderstorms to see that drop to 60% and then surprise, no rain. The morning began with the fishing derby and I can t believe how many fish were caught. They caught over 150 fish and it has to be a record. Yes, they were all small, but still a lot of fish. The buffet lunch was enjoyed by all with the Nickel City reptile show and then the great tug of war at the end. Great Job again. Upcoming events include Rockin on the River, the first great summer party of the BLC Season. Please remember to sign-up today! Our July event is Christmas in July stay tuned for details. I hear that Santa may be making an appearance at the BLC early this year. I end my article discussing the departure of Catherine Trzaska. Catherine started at the BLC in November of 2014 as the Banquet Manager. She has been a great employee to the membership of the Buffalo Launch Club and will be missed by the staff. We wish her the best of luck in her new position at Ingram Micro in event management.

22 Page 22 "Euchre at The Club" Some of our membership may be unaware that a Euchre group meets every third Thursday at the club from 7:00 PM to approximately 9:30 PM. The group is primarily for members and mates as couples, though not playing as partners. We also have some former members and singles can be accommodated. Partners are determined by number draw prior to play each month. This allows random matching of varying partner skill levels. Members of the group are polled early the third week of the month to insure sufficient attendance to allow at least two tables for rotation. Polling and response is done by . Confirmation or cancellation is also by , usually by early Wednesday PM prior to Thursday play. We can always accommodate new members to the group at any time. It would be wise to check ahead in the winter months since we do have considerable "snowbird" migration, often requiring cancellation.
