1 The newsletter for the Central California Koi Society P U B L I S H E D M O N T H L Y M A Y It s nearly that time again; the Joint Meeting with our sister club, Bakersfield Koi and Water garden Society. This year the meeting will be held on Saturday, June 15th at 11:00 a.m. at Tony and Nancy Palazzo s home located at Adobe Way, Madera. The club will be providing tri-tip and beverages and we ask the members attending bring a side dish of their choice: i.e. Salad, Rolls, Desert, Pasta, Veggie Please call Nancy Palazzo at and let her know what you will bring and how many in Tray or whatever you can provide. your party will be attending. We will need a headcount sometime in May to place the order and to know how many tables and chairs to set up. There will be a raffle for different koi/pond items and if you are interested in donating anything towards the raffle please contact Rosimeri at or at cencalkoi@gmail.com. I look forward to seeing everyone at our joint meeting this is always a fun time and a social meeting, more of a get together and to catch up with our friends from down south. 2 By Amanda Bulls-Stephens Instead of a club meeting in April, a number of members met in San Jose for the ZNA koi show. The club would be remiss if we didn t present a friendship award for our favorite fish, and Rosimeri Tran presented Khuong Doan with our friendship award for his great looking Tancho Asagi. 3 Sandy Winn April 16, 2013 Board meeting was held at Sang and Rosimeri Tran s home. Treasures report club balance is $5, Tony and Rosimeri. Still working on getting non profit club status for club. Club name is reserved and working on next steps to get this done. Discussed ZNA nor cal trip to San Jose. Then go to Champion Koi and to Tse Koi. Show starts at 9:00 am. Will plan to meet at 1740 N. We have members, prospective members, and the public asking frequently for references, suggestions, or just any information about anyone in this business. Pond maintenance companies allow us to relax a bit with our ponding duties, but we have to find one first. 5 The club has recently purchased some sodium thiosulfate which is a dechlorinator used when changing your pond water, it removes the chlorine from the water. One pound of sodium thiosulfate crystals can dechlorinate 30,720 gallons of pond water. The club is selling it at 2 lbs jar for $10.00 or 4 lbs jar for $ We also have potassium permanganate for sale 7 oz jar for $5.00 each. As we ease into to Spring, we also need to ease into feeding our koi, don t overfeed at first you must start them off with something they can easily digest, there are some cold weather koi food that you can feed or just feed them something light protein to get their digestion system working. Remember to only feed the amount that they can consume in five minutes, if they show signs of not interested in eating or any leftover food should be scooped up from pond and tossed away. Otherwise it will just create waste and foul up your pond s water quality. Speaking of water quality, at our May 18 th meeting we will be doing water quality tests, so if you would be interested in finding out your pond s water parameters, please bring a small water sample to the meeting and we will test it for you. Also at the May meeting we will have a guest speaker, Michael Hernandez of Tomigai Koi food will be talking to us regarding koi, koi care, and nutrition. This will be THE meeting to be at, so come on out to the May 18 th meeting at Dale and Sandy Winn s home and be enlightened by Mike s knowledge, passion and expertise on koi. We had a great time at the ZNA Norcal koi show in San Jose, Seng and I entered some of our koi and it was fun catching up with our friends up north and we ran into some from the south as well. Dale and Sandy Winn and John Kendall caught up with us on Saturday morning of the show and we explored the show with them and then went to visit Champion Koi and TSE Koi to pick up koi supplies. We presented the Friendship award at the banquet to a Tancho Asagi, as we had never seen a koi like that and felt it deserved the award, it was presented to Khuong Doan of the ZNA Norcal club. Our club is in need of volunteers, due to health issues; Lou Weaver has resigned from the Vice President position, so the club now has an open slot for the Vice President and an open slot for a board member. Please let me know if you are interested in either of these slots. Also there are still outstanding member dues for 2013, so if you haven t already done so, take the time to send in your membership dues of $35.00 to CCKS, 5832 E. Erin Ave, Fresno, CA or if you want to pay at the May 18th meeting that will be fine too.
