O C T O B E R the Probus Broadcast PROBUS Club of Port Perry NOTE: we are a GREEN Club please bring a mug President s Note Greetings to our PROBUS members. Our last speaker, Jane Pang, provided us with an interesting commentary on Chinese culture. Our October speaker, Elaine Charal, is a certified graphologist (handwriting analyst), keynote speaker and entertainer. Stay tuned for her presentation! I was not able to attend the Affections of May at the Herongate Theatre due to a planned vacation in New York City, but I heard that our group enjoyed both the lunch and the show, and I certainly enjoyed NYC. Since our last meeting, I have been preparing to join some of our members for the inaugural Travel Interest Group at Colonel Mustard s on October 6 th. And I m looking forward to the PROBUS Oktoberfest trip on October 12 th. After all, you can t have too much fun! At our October 18 th meeting, Port Perry Mayor Tom Rowatt will join us to welcome our club to the area and also to recognize Dennis Bayley for his contributions to the community. Several members of the management team will attend a regional PROBUS meeting in Pickering on October 17 th. Sharing of information by more mature clubs will help us to ensure that you have good opportunities with Port Perry PROBUS. Happy October! Judith Spring, President What s coming! 2 PROBUS BROADCAST OCTOBER, Chinese Culture and the formation of Shen Yun Jane Pang How do you preserve a culture that is under attack? Jane Pang visited the PROBUS Club of Port Perry and spoke to this very question. Ancient Chinese customs and culture are under attack from the Chinese Communist regime. The answer to this was founded in 2006 by practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual discipline, in the performing arts company Shen Yun ("the beauty of divine beings dancing"). It is a non-profit performing arts company dedicated to showcasing Chinese culture to the world. 5,000 years of Chinese culture are captured in a two and a half hour performance. Believing that the language of art is a universal language, Shen Yun combines classical Chinese dance, music, and modern technology to depict myths and stories from Chinese history. Members of the Shen Yun company are dedicated to this cultural revival, living a life of meditation and purification in addition to bringing ancient Chinese culture and stories to the stage. Notice of Next Speaker Next Meeting s (October 18, ) Speaker Elaine Charal, Certified Graphologist Elaine Charal is a Canadian, Toronto-based Certified Graphologist (hand writing analyst), a Keynote Speaker and Media Personality. She received her certification through the International Graphoanalysis Society of Chicago and also the American Handwriting Foundation, a handwriting 2 association in the United States. She has worked with over 150 companies for more than 20 years as a Certified Graphologist, analyzing handwriting and assisting companies in making their hiring decisions.

PROBUS BROADCAST OCTOBER, Interest Groups PROBUS Club of Port Perry We now have 22 interest groups in 18 interest areas that are presently operating or in the process of being formed. And for this we have to thank the 16 Club members who have stepped up to coordinate those many groups. This effort by these very selfless individuals helps to bring a lot of opportunities for socializing, fun and interesting experiences to our membership. Hiking Group Bill Morrison billandmaryare@gmail.com; As we move further into fall, the leaves should be increasingly showing more colour. The locations for the last two hikes, Long Sault Conservation Area on September 26 th and Walker Woods East on October 3rd, were in forested areas that typically show a lot of autumn colour. The next hike is at Uxbridge Countryside Preserve near Uxbridge on October 14 th and will be in the 6-7 km range taking around 2 hours at a moderate pace. This is great hiking weather with decent temperatures and gorgeous colour. The group welcomes additional members Music - Ukulele Group Andy Stevenson andystevenson58@gmail.com; The PROBUS Absolute Beginners Ukulele Group is progressing well. They have healthy numbers and lots of enthusiasm. Special thanks to the great help from some experienced players from the "DUKES", Durham's Ukulele Club, who are also PROBUS members. In addition, appreciation to the Group s hosts, Carol and Fred, whose condo is serving the group well. The beginners course for ukulele started on September 13th from 10 am to Noon and has just completed their 3 rd session. At the present time there are 12 people attending with 2 more joining the recent class. The course will run weekly for eight weeks. 3

PROBUS BROADCAST OCTOBER, Golf Group Dave Matthews The Golf Interest Group had its latest golf outing on Thursday, Oct 6 th at Sunnybrae. They have been having golfing outings every 2 weeks for the last couple of months, and they may have 1 or 2 more depending on the weather. Next year they hope to try different courses and start in the spring. They had a good start for the group and hope to expand the number of participants next year. Guess Who s Coming to Dinner Carole Matthews dandcm43@yahoo.ca; This is a new group that recently formed. The group will meet for dinner on a monthly basis with the schedule and future locations to be determined by the group at its first event. So far 27 members have signed up for the first dinner on Saturday, October 8 th, at Colonel Mustards at 7:00 PM. If you re interested in joining many of your fellow Club members at an evening of dinner and talk at interesting restaurants, give Carole a call or . This looks like a real winner of an interest group. Lawn Bowling Dennis Bayley dennis.bayley@icloud.com; It s the end of the lawn bowling season. All who expressed an interest were invited to meet at the Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club to learn more about the game. Before next season starts next May, there will be further opportunities to visit the club. So stayed tuned. Healthy Eating Group Suzanne Redford suzanne.redford@sympatico.ca; The first meeting held recently at the Prince Albert Hall was very informative. The Group discussed a lot of options that the group would like to do such as having speakers, visiting organic farms, exploring bee keeping, and learning more about herbs and how to cook with them just to name a few. They may be visiting an Apple Orchard for the next meeting on Oct 28th. Suzanne Redford, the Coordinator, would love to see this group grow. Tim Casey, Interest Groups Chair interestgroups.portperryprobus@gmail.com 4

PROBUS BROADCAST OCTOBER, Euchre Group Ann Berube & Margaret Adamson (Afternoon group) (Evening group) The afternoon Euchre group had their first game on September 23 rd, and all eight participants seem to enjoy the experience. Two of the group members were unable to attend. The next game is scheduled for Friday, October 7th. The Group can still welcome a few more members. They expect the last game of the calendar year will be December 16 th, but that has to be confirmed. An evening Euchre group has been formed for games once a month on the third Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM. The first rotation hosts are Phil and Becky West on October 18 th, and the next hosts will be Dave and Carole Matthews on November 15th. Beginners Bridge Group Judy Anderson judykins999@yahoo.ca; Group The beginners bridge group has been going very well. They have been meeting now for the last three weeks. As they learn the basics of this great game, they re also having fun playing out some of the hands. The group meets on a weekly basis on Tuesday afternoons starting at 1:30 and going until 3:30 or so. The plan is to continue meeting weekly. At this point the group is full with the hopes for a second group to form. Cards Hand & Foot Group Louise Bardswich lbardswich@gmail.com; The Hand and Foot Card Group has weekly meetings so group members can choose their own frequency of attendance weekly, bi-weekly or monthly or as their schedule permits. The beauty of Hand and Foot is that even if only two people show up, you can still have a game! The group will be meeting Wednesday afternoons at 1:30 PM, and it welcomes new players. For those not familiar with the game, Hand and Foot is similar to Canasta, but it s easy to learn. 5

PROBUS BROADCAST OCTOBER, Breakfast (Mixed) Group Mary-Anne Unwin We now have 4 Breakfast Clubs meeting as follows: - Group A /Thursday Breakfast Club meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month - Group B/Tuesday Breakfast Club meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month - Group C/Wednesday Breakfast Club meets on the 1st Wednesday of each month - Group D/Monday Breakfast Club meets on the 3rd Monday of each month The entire purpose of the Breakfast Clubs is to have a nice breakfast and general discussion among the participants on any subjects of interest to the group members. Each group can accommodate a maximum of around 12 to 13 members, and there will be a waiting list formed for any group for which there are more than that number of members interested in joining it. Group A/Thursday Breakfast Club is currently full, but there are vacancies in the other 3 Breakfast Clubs. Waiting lists will be used to fill vacancies in the group when a group member has left the group and to fill in when a particular group meeting in any month has a vacancy. If members are unable to make their regular Breakfast meeting or would like to transfer to another group, they can contact their Breakfast Club Coordinator. A RSVP will be sent out to the members of each group about one week before the respective meeting date. We ask that the members of each group take the 10 seconds that it will require to reply in order to advise us as to whether or not you will be attending. To be fair to the restaurant and to ensure there will be sufficient seating for the group, we need to advise the restaurant in advance with regard to the number of expected attendees for breakfast. Remember, there is no obligation on any group member to attend any of their monthly group breakfasts, but we do ask you to advise if you will not be able to do so. And please note that we will not be doing any follow-up s or phone calls, beyond the monthly RSVP , to determine that. A sign-up sheet will be available at the October Membership meeting on the 18th for those interested in joining one of the groups. Many PROBUS clubs put together at best one Breakfast club meeting a month. In our case we have one for each of 4 days of the week and 4 weeks in the month. This way we can accommodate almost any Club member's schedule while offering a great opportunity to periodically meet your fellow Club members in a relaxed environment of food and conversation. 6

PROBUS BROADCAST OCTOBER, Travel Group Judy Spring The new Travel Interest Group had its first meeting at Colonel Mustards on October 6 th. The meeting was wellattended, and Judy Spring and Bob Ashdown presented a lot of information from their experiences traveling in Portugal and Spain. The primary purpose of the Travel Interest Group will be to help the group members become more informed about travel through speakers and sharing information and to assist with facilitating travel for those who are interested. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 8th from 11:30 to 1:30 at Colonel Mustard s Pub & Grill, 15 Water Street, Port Perry. The topic will be Cruising. Note that the Scugog Memorial Library has a Travelogue at 2:00 PM that same day on Southern Peru with Anne Scott. Those who wish to attend the Library presentation must pre-register at Anyone interested in joining the PROBUS Travel Group should contact the coordinator, Judy Spring, at president.portperryprobus@gmail.com or , and there will be a sign-up sheet at the next Membership meeting on October 18th. Theatre Interest Group We have a lot of interest in a Theatre Interest Group from Club members, and we ve already done the initial survey of the theatre interests of those who previously expressed an interest in such a group. But what we need at this point is a coordinator (or coordinators) to take on the operation of this group. For those considering the coordinator role, we ll provide assistance, and there s a lot of advice available in how to make such a group successful, but most importantly you definitely won t be alone in making this Theatre group work. So give an or call to Tim Casey at interestgroups.portperryprobus@gmail.com or if you d like to give the coordinator role a try. It ll be a lot of fun. Tim Casey, Interest Groups Chair interestgroups.portperryprobus@gmail.com 7

PROBUS BROADCAST OCTOBER, We re presently soliciting volunteers for coordinators of certain interest groups from among members who expressed a particular interest in one or more of such groups. These potential Interest Groups include: - Bowling - Scrabble - Museum Tours - Cribbage - Billiards/Pool - Movies - Poker - Wine Making - Opera - Dominoes - Wine Tasting So you might be getting an (or more than one if you expressed an interest in more than one of the above areas) asking you to consider being a coordinator. And if you don t get one of those s but you re interested in one or more of those interest areas, let Tim Casey (interestgroups.portperryprobus@gmail.com) know and also let him know if you re willing to coordinate such a group. PROBUS is an all-volunteer organization, and its success at serving its membership is dependent upon its members volunteering for tasks like organizing an interest group. The coordination activity is not difficult at all, and we provide a lot of help. So please think about it. Three new interest groups just in their formative stage that you should be hearing about over the next month include an Open Studio Art group, Motorcycling group and a Computer group. So stay tuned for information about these start-ups. And keep in mind that there are almost 70 additional interest areas not represented above where club members indicated an interest, so any of those could be started up at any time by someone like yourself who has a passion for an area of interest that other club members would share. Port Perry PROBUS Club members Another reminder please. One thing all the members can help us with is that of responding to s from PROBUS volunteers. For instance when an interest group is being formed, we typically send out an to all of those members who previously expressed an interest in that interest area in order to gauge if each such individual remains interested in joining the group and perhaps soliciting the members opinions as to how the group might operate. In addition, an is usually sent out to the potential group to schedule the first meeting. And finally, the coordinator often will send out an to the group before each regular meeting to determine the probable attendance. If you get any such s, we ask that you take a minute to reply right away. When coordinators have followed up with people who did not respond to a RSVP , the most common reason given by far for not responding is that with the high volume of s they receive daily from family, friends, etc., they simply forgot to respond to the interest group one. So it s best to respond as soon as you read the PROBUS RSVP because otherwise you may miss out on some great activities. If you re not interested in the group, just reply with a not interested - we don t need to know why and won t take any offense at the shortness of the reply. And if interested, just say interested. If the is related to scheduling a meeting, just let us know yes or no as to whether you can attend again, no explanations either way are necessary. We want to keep this as simple as possible. When a coordinator doesn t receive a reply to an , the coordinator doesn t know if it s because the recipient didn t get the or if there were perhaps difficulties responding. The coordinator is then left with the possibility of potential group members missing key information, meeting rooms perhaps being overcrowded or the need for the coordinator to do a follow-up call to the people who have not responded to the . And this gets particularly troubling when trying to reserve tables at restaurants and seats at other events. Our coordinators are all volunteers who already give of themselves to assist the membership of our Club. We need to support them by ensuring that their s to members do at least get a timely response. And if you re not comfortable with replying by , please feel free to phone the coordinator. Thank you for your understanding. OTHER INTEREST GROUPS NEWS PROBUS Members - We Need Your Help! 8

PROBUS BROADCAST OCTOBER, Theatre Trip: The Affections of May, Herongate Theatre Sept 25 th, We had a wonderful afternoon experience at Herongate Theatre. If you haven t been, it s a must see. The area around the barn itself is a nice place to spend a sunny afternoon. The home cooked hot buffet luncheon was a delicious affair with all of the trimmings and excellent service. The show was a great laugh, good actors and fun story line. At intermission a wonderful plate of fresh made cookies was passed row to row what a nice surprise and added touch. Afterwards you could meet with the cast at the bar one on one. The committee is definitely interested in a repeat to this venue for those of you that are interested. More information on upcoming events is available at the Social Table each meeting. Note, if an event you would like to attend is currently listed you must reserve your space with a cheque to guarantee a seat/space. 9
