PROBUS Broadcast PROBUS Club of Port Perry NOTE: we are a GREEN Club please bring a mug President s Message Season s greetings to you and yours! Geoff and I are looking forward to hosting our two children, Melanie and Robert, and their spouses, our five grandchildren and Geoff s Mom, Jeannie, on Christmas Eve. Our house looks festive and we re enjoying spending time with friends. I have always been a goal setter, and at Christmas, I annually consider how the past year has unfolded, and what I plan to accomplish and enjoy in the coming year. Our new PROBUS club has certainly met my expectations. We have now grown to 220 members with varied speakers, social events, and interest groups to serve our members. Since we held our Foundation meeting six months ago, Dennis Bayley has arranged for us to learn and be entertained by Bill McKee, Town Crier, Kevin Donovan, Investigative Reporter, Alan Malory, Experiencing Mount Everest, Jane Pang, Chinese Culture, Elaine Charal, Graphologist, and Jonathan van Bilsen, Photojournalist. Linda Schell and her team have organized social outings including a Fun Run & Pot Luck, a theatre trip to Herongate, an Oktoberfest day, a trip to Ocala Winery, St. Jacob Sparkles, a Christmas Cantata, Christmas Lunch at Royal Ashburn, and dinner with the Oshawa PROBUS Club. Most of these events have been our own, and some have been at the invitation of other PROBUS clubs. 2 President s Message (continued) Under Tim Casey s lead, we now have 28 interest groups in 24 different areas ranging from Healthy Eating, Book Club, Hiking, Golf, Ukulele, Dining Groups, Scrapbooking, Travel, and Card Groups to name a few. How fortunate are we to have such broad choices when planning our days! PROBUS Club of Port Perry PROBUS Canada In December, the members of an investment club that I belong to always discuss what we individually spent money on during the past year that has given us pleasure. I will be sharing with my group the modest investment that I have made in my membership in the PROBUS club, with very good returns. Much more fun than trading on the stock market! I wish you all the best for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and for those who do not celebrate Christmas, a happy and healthy holiday season. Judy Spring, President Photo Contest We need your photographs of the membership of Port Perry PROBUS having fun while engaging in one of our activities, social events or membership meetings! The winning photos will be displayed prominently on the first page of our website and in our newsletter - and look at the prize you could win! Grand Prize: Golfing for Two at the Oakridge Golf Course (approximately $200 in value) Second Prize: Up to $50 towards a Port Perry PROBUS social activity of your choice Entry deadline: January 10, 2017 Please send your photo(s) entries to webmaster.portperryprobus@gmail.com by January 10, 2017 Winner Announcement: Membership Meeting - January 17, 2017 See 2 website for more details.

Elaine Charal Certified Graphologist Speaker: October 18th Jonathan van Bilsen Professional Photographer Speaker: November 15th Elaine discussed the lost art of handwriting at our October meeting. Referring to handwriting as the paper mirror that is your handwriting, she emphasized the subtle communication that is inherent in all of our handwriting. That communication can tell us a lot about a person s personality, if we know what to look for! Jonathan took us on a world tour with photographs and commentary. We visited such locations as Egypt, Zimbabwe, India, Morocco, Srilanka and Iguazu, to name a few. Jonathan s World of Paradox was engaging and captivated the imagination of the audience members. Using humour to illustrate his travels adventures, Jonathan made the world that much more accessible to us. Notice of Next Speaker Next Meeting s (January 17, 2017) Speaker Lars Henricksson, Honorary Consul for Sweden Lars Henricksson, Honorary Consul for Sweden has more than 30 years experience in trade promotion between Sweden and Canada. He has also been involved in cultural exchanges between the two countries with particular emphasis on integration of immigrants, health care and urban sustainability. 3

Interest Groups PROBUS Club of Port Perry Hiking Group Bill Morrison The last December hike was scheduled for December 12 th in the Uxbridge Countryside Preserve and the adjacent Timbers Tract of the Durham Forest. The group did a hike in this location on October 14th. Since the hikes are now getting into more winter conditions, it might be beneficial to go over some of the recommendations for winter hiking: Layering your clothing is always a good idea, so each individual can add or remove a layer as needed. We typically warm up after walking a ways, but then the wind can have a significant cooling effect too. Some of you may prefer to wear higher-topped shoes or boots to keep snow out, provide additional ankle support and for more warmth. Others might like to stick with low-cut shoes, which offer more flexibility for the foot and ankle. If you have gaiters, it may be a very good time to put them into use. With the anticipation of snow on the ground, consider wearing shoes or boots that have lots of tread on the soles; most hiking shoes or boots are pretty good in this regard. For traction, hikers often use 'icers' (also often called crampons) that go onto the soles of your shoes or boots to provide grip on ice and snow. Conditions under which we might cancel winter hikes include (a) if the weather were so bad that it would be risky just to travel to the meeting place; (b) very deep snow (and no snowshoes) so that hikers could easily become exhausted; (c) extreme cold and wind that would elevate the risk of frostbite; or (d) ice storms (would just seem hard to turn this into a positive outing!) Update on Interest Groups We now have 28 interest groups formed or in the process of being formed in 24 different activity areas, but we have a wide variety of other interest areas that need coordinators to get things going. It's not difficult to do and it's quite rewarding! So take a look at the interest group survey results, pick an interest area you would like to coordinate, and contact Tim Casey at interestgroups.portperryprobus@g mail.com ( ) to get started! 4

Healthy Eating Group Suzanne Redford The November, 24 th meeting took place at the Prince Albert Hall. We had a fun, healthy cooking demonstration by the talented Chef Regan who works out of the Hobby Horse Arms in Uxbridge and offers catering services. Chef Regan captivated the 28 members in attendance by demonstrating how to cook five healthy appetizers. The appetizers were mindful of all different dietary desires (i.e. one was gluten-free, one was vegan, etc). Everyone who attended brought home a new healthy cooking tip. The plan for the next meeting is as follows: Date: January 26 th, 2017 Time: 2:00 4:00 p.m. Location: Prince Albert Hall Meeting title: Healthy breakfast ideas to live your best life! Description: Join us to learn clean-eating breakfast smoothies, dishes and protein bars. It s like eating dessert for breakfast the healthy way! Cost: $10.00 per person RSVP to Suzanne Redford at Suzanne.redford@sympatico.ca by Monday, January 16 th, 2017 Breakfast (Mixed) Group Mary-Anne Unwin donkeyduo@outlook.com; Currently 3 Breakfast Clubs (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) are up and running. The Monday Breakfast Club is being suspended for the time being until the group can find a few more members to attend (the clubs like to have a minimum of 5 to 6 attendees for each monthly breakfast). By all accounts, members have enjoyed meeting other PROBUS members over coffee and a nice meal. Each Club will choose different restaurants to try from time to time and generally meet once a month at a time convenient to most (i.e. not too early for those who like to sleep in a bit, LOL!). Each Breakfast Club receives an about 1 to 2 weeks before each meeting with the details and an RSVP request. Members are asked to respond if they will or will not be attending in order to prepare the restaurant for their arrival. The schedules are as follows: TUESDAY BREAKFAST CLUB meets the 4th Tuesday of each Month and will meet again on November 22nd and December 13 (changed from usual date). There are a few openings for more members. WEDNESDAY BREAKFAST CLUB met for the first time on November 2nd and will meet again on December 14th (instead of the 7th due to PROBUS Christmas luncheon). There are a few openings for new members. THURSDAY BREAKFAST CLUB will be meeting again on November 10th and December 8th. This group is currently full, but names will be taken for members interested in joining as soon as there is an opening. If members miss their regular meeting, they have the option of attending a different group s meeting as a guest, but they need to let the coordinator know they wish to do so. Likewise, if members wish to attend more Monthly Breakfast meetings, let the coordinator know. The coordinator is Mary-Anne Unwin at donkeyduo@outlook.com or

Guess Who s Coming to Dinner Carole Matthews dandcm43@yahoo.ca; Although the GWCTD coordinators, Carole and Dave Matthews, are away for the winter, Thelma and Murray Wilson have graciously offered to take on the role until Carole and Dave return. Information about the next dinner will be provided to the group s members by and at the next membership meeting in January and on the website. Grey Cells Matter Mary-Anne Unwin donkeyduo@outlook.com; A Grey Cells Matter Interest Group is in its planning stages. The purpose of this interest group is to have light-hearted fun at solving riddles, word games and puzzles of various difficulty levels while stimulating our minds and improving our memory, logic and observational skills. You ll laugh at yourself at times for not solving the seemingly simple puzzles!! It is not intended to be competitive and no scores will be kept. Sometimes we ll work alone, sometimes in groups, but none of the games will be long in duration. Whether you succeed at solving the puzzles or not is not important - it s the trying that matters. The Whitby/Brooklin PROBUS Chapter has declared their similar Interest Group to be very popular (over 40 members) with lots of laughs during their sessions. There will be a small fee per member per month to cover the costs of the extensive photocopying, coffee and snacks and the puzzle books if necessary. We re pleased that Judy Bodner has offered her home to host our first session on January 9th, 2017 between 2-4 p.m. Contact Mary-Anne for more information. Jazz Barbara Wooding bwooding22@gmail.com; We met at Col.Mustard's as part of Lynn McDonald's Group on Sunday, December 4 th at 7:30p.m.We heard an eclectic singer called 'Pilar" from Rome, Italy. It was a taste of specifically Sicilian music called the Sicilian Project. It was directed by Michael Occhipinti who played and arranged the music along with his brother Roberto. They led the tour from Salt Spring Island on the West Coast, to Alberta and back to Toronto. Port Perry was their final evening before going back to Toronto and eventually back to Sicily. The Occhipinti's home is in Toronto. Their extended family live in many parts of Sicily. Very enjoyable and a night of Sicilian passion and fun! Til after the Christmas season of merriment and cheer! Watch for more jazz events in January 2017! Travel Group Judy Spring president.portperryprobus@gmail.com; The second meeting of the Travel Interest Group was held on November 8th and the subject was Cruise Tips and Best Experiences that included a presentation by PROBUS members and by Expedia Cruiseship Centres in Port Perry. Group members were encouraged to attend the Scugog Memorial Library immediately following the interest group meeting for a Travelogue on Anne Scott s travels in Southern Peru. Following this was the December 8th meeting of the group where good snowbird locations to visit was discussed, there won't be a meeting until March 9th because the Travel Group coordinator will be travelling! The March meeting topic will be on Central and South America. 6

Euchre Group Ann Berube & Margaret Adamson (Afternoon group) (Evening group) The Afternoon Group would welcome 2 to 3 more players. If interested in the evening group, please contact Marg Adamson. Beginners Bridge Group Judy Anderson judykins999@yahoo.ca; The Beginners Bridge group continues to meet weekly with group members enjoying the challenges of bidding and playing some interesting hands. They are a very relaxed group with lots of lively discussions at the table as they navigate the bidding process prior to playing each hand. They will continue to meet weekly with a bit of a break over Christmas and the New Year. The group is small which makes it ideal for learning this game, so they will not be adding any new members at this time. The Coordinator is Judy Anderson (judykins999@yahoo.ca or ). Cards Hand & Foot Group Louise Bardswich lbardswich@gmail.com; For those interested in this game (which is much like Canasta), please contact the coordinator, Louise Bardswich, at lbardswich@gmail.com or Music - Ukulele Group Andy Stevenson andystevenson58@gmail.com; The Probus Ukulele ABC's (Absolute Beginner Class) have finished their fall 10-week training program and enjoyed a performance of their skills at the November Probus meeting. Some members are now jamming with the DUKES, the Port Perry based Durham Ukulele Klub, also led by Probus member Andy Stevenson. Congratulations to everyone for your great achievements. We will review Probus members interest again in the spring. Lawn Bowling Dennis Bayley dennis.bayley@icloud.com; The Lawn Bowling Interest Group will be starting up next spring, so as we approach that time, please contact the Coordinator, Dennis Bayley (dennis.bayley@icloud.com or ), for more information or watch the newsletter and website. Golf Group Dave Matthews dandcm43@yahoo.ca; The Golf interest group has suspended operations for the winter. As we approach spring, contact the Coordinator, Dave Matthews (dandcm43@yahoo.ca or ), for more information about the group s spring golf schedule. 7

Theatre Group Our theatre survey is done, we have our contact list prepared and we now have a list of all the theatres within 3 hours of Port Perry. So we re ready to go with the Theatre Interest Group. The person who was looking at coordinating the group unfortunately cannot now do so. Consequently all we need to get this going is a coordinator or co-coordinators. It ll be a lot of fun, so contact Tim Casey at interestgroups.portperryprobus@gmail.com or to volunteer. Other Interest Group News BOARD GAMES - A Board Games Interest Group is in the process of being formed under the Coordinator, Tina Allen (cortinaallen3@gmail.com or ). Stay tuned on the Club website for more information about this group or contact Tina directly. BOOK CLUB - For current information about the Book Club, please contact Suzanne Redford at suzanne.redford@sympatico.ca or LUNCH MEET - The Lunch Meet interest group meets for lunch immediately following the general PROBUS members meeting each month. The location of the lunch that day will be announced at the meeting. For any questions please contact Tim Casey at interestgroups.portperryprobus@gmail.com or MOVIES - A Movies Interest Group is now being formed under coordinator Georgia Brock (georgia.brock@sympatico.ca or ). The initial organizing meeting was held on November 7th. A sign-up sheet and information on the group will be at the Interest Groups table at the next PROBUS Club members' meeting on November 15th for those interested in learning about the group or joining it. MUSIC JAM - The Music Jam Interest Group is still looking for a few more individuals who play instruments and would like to jam with some of their fellow PROBUS members. Please contact the coordinator, Bill Walker, at bwalker@powergate.ca or OPEN STUDIO ART - The first organizing meeting was on November 9th. If you would like more information about the group, please contact Margaret Adamson (madamson905@gmail.com or ). POKER - A poker group is also now being formed. Please contact Norm Sanford at nsanford@xplornet.com or for more information. 8

PROBUS Members - We Need Your Help! Port Perry PROBUS Club members Another reminder please. One thing all the members can help us with is that of responding to s from PROBUS volunteers. For instance when an interest group is being formed, we typically send out an to all of those members who previously expressed an interest in that interest area in order to gauge if each such individual remains interested in joining the group and perhaps soliciting the members opinions as to how the group might operate. In addition, an is usually sent out to the potential group to schedule the first meeting. And finally, the coordinator often will send out an to the group before each regular meeting to determine the probable attendance. If you get any such s, we ask that you take a minute to reply right away. When coordinators have followed up with people who did not respond to a RSVP , the most common reason given by far for not responding is that with the high volume of s they receive daily from family, friends, etc., they simply forgot to respond to the interest group one. So it s best to respond as soon as you read the PROBUS RSVP because otherwise you may miss out on some great activities. If you re not interested in the group, just reply with a not interested - we don t need to know why and won t take any offense at the shortness of the reply. And if interested, just say interested. If the is related to scheduling a meeting, just let us know yes or no as to whether you can attend again, no explanations either way are necessary. We want to keep this as simple as possible. When a coordinator doesn t receive a reply to an , the coordinator doesn t know if it s because the recipient didn t get the or if there were perhaps difficulties responding. The coordinator is then left with the possibility of potential group members missing key information, meeting rooms perhaps being overcrowded or the need for the coordinator to do a follow-up call to the people who have not responded to the . And this gets particularly troubling when trying to reserve tables at restaurants and seats at other events. Our coordinators are all volunteers who already give of themselves to assist the membership of our Club. We need to support them by ensuring that their s to members do at least get a timely response. And if you re not comfortable with replying by , please feel free to phone the coordinator. Thank you for your understanding. 9

Christmas Lunch: Royal Ashburn Golf Club December 7 th, 2016 A wonderful event was hosted by the staff at Royal Ashburn Golf Club. They served a tasty meal of traditional homemade fare in high style, with lots of great smiles. Background music by Rob Barge set the joyful mood and magic by the hands of Andy Blau entertained us for the duration. Royal Ashburn also donated a round of golf for two as our main door prize. This was awarded to Jim Wakeford, who was arbitrarily picked by our committee from the list of attendees. We had a huge donation of food to take to the food bank. In addition, members gave $65 in cash and cheques to the Food Bank. For future donation collections, we may wish to have some of our gentlemen drop off the goodies. There were only ladies "older than me" as they pointed out, who would be able to carry the heavy boxes in. We didn't think ahead, but resources were pooled and got it done in an assembly line fashion... with some chuckles & "murmurs" along the way. What a wonderful crew over there!! Thanks to all the PROBUS members for their generous donations. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Chinese New Year Celebration January 25th. 10

Dennis Bayley Mayor s Honour Roll Recipient October 18, 2016 How wonderful to see the efforts of an individual recognized! The PROBUS Club of Port Perry had that privilege at the October 18 th Member Meeting, when His Honour, Mayor Thomas Rowett attended our meeting to make a presentation to Dennis Bayley, our Speaker Coordinator. Dennis s name has been added to the Scugog Council s annual Mayor s Honour Roll plaque hanging inside the Scugog Township Municipal Office at 181 Perry Street. In his presentation speech, Mayor Rowett listed Dennis s many community volunteer efforts a very impressive list, indeed! We are very proud of Dennis s volunteer efforts and pleased that the community has recognized them. 11
