In Wales we have one Group (Cardiff) that employs paid staff to provide a day service to brain injury survivors five days a week and run social groups in Cardiff, Blackwood, Newport and Pontypridd. 6 Biographies Dr Paul Mullins Director of the Bangor NeuroImaging Unit Bangor University Dr Mullins was educated at James Cook University in Australia, where he received a Bachelor of Science (Honours), majoring in Chemistry and Biochemistry. Paul obtained his PhD from the University of Queensland, Australia, while working for SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals using MR methodologies to study stroke. During this PhD Paul further developed his interest in the brain and how brain cells communicate, and respond, to external stimuli, injury and illness. He followed with post-docs at Georgetown University and then the University of New Mexico, using MRI and MRS to study traumatic brain injury and Schizophrenia among other central nervous system disorders. Paul then started work at The MIND Imaging Centre in Albuquerque NM where he managed the 4T MRI facility. Currently Director of the Bangor NeuroImaging Unit, Senior MRI Physicist, and senior lecturer in the department of Psychology, Paul collaborates with researchers from the College of Health and Behavioural Sciences on neuroimaging study design, data acquisition and processing and resources available to help with their research questions. He is also the Course organiser for the Masters in Neuroimaging. Actively involved in research using magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure neurochemistry in central nervous system function and disorders, Dr Mullins has 52 publications in the area of MRI and MRS. In particular projects are aimed at measuring neurotransmitter (Glutamate, Glutamine and GABA) changes and relationships in response to external and internal stimuli. EU funding for the development of neuroimaging research for dementia studies has recently been secured, involving collaboration with Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. Most recently work has focused on the simultaneous acquisition of MRS with other measures of neural activity (EEG, BOLD) to better elucidate the neurochemical correlates of Brain function. 6
7 Biographies Megan Jones Brain Injury Survivor Megan was born and raised in North Wales in a Welsh speaking family and had a happy childhood with her three sisters. Megan is now 22 years old and is in her second year studying nursing at the University of Southampton. Her experience has consolidated her personal faith as a Christian; she feel she has been given a second chance in life and wants to grab it with both hands.
