3 Chapter Activities Inter-Continental Advanced Materials For Photonics (I-CAMP) Summer School, United Kingdom (June-July 2013): While in the United Kingdom we disseminated information about the benefits of an SPIE chapter. We believe this encouraged students from Cambridge University and from other Universities worldwide to become more involved in their local SPIE chapter, or with SPIE in general. Informal Meetings Over the last few months, we've held bi-weekly informal meetings to promote chapter relations and encourage new members to get involved. Monthly Chapter Meetings We have hosted formal monthly meetings to hold officer elections, introduce students to SPIE, encourage membership, and promote involvement in the local optics community. At these meetings we also hold informal talks and plan social events with the chapter. End of the Semester/ Holiday Party We got together with current members as well as interested students to relax and enjoy each other s company before the upcoming stress of finals. We also discussed plans for the next semester and worked on designs for an optics demonstration for the physics building lobby. Group Events Our president at the time, Derek Gann, arranged a Laser Tag joint-event with the university s OSA chapter at a local entertainment business. This proved to have a very successful turn out and resulted in the addition of new members. Workshops Our webmaster Dennis Gardner presented a brief tutorial to members about using the useful document preparation program LaTex. Laboratory and Industry Tours A group of members coordinated with CU s Sigma Pi Sigma chapter (the physics honors society) to tour Lockheed Martin Space Center in June A small group of members, again collaborating with Sigma Pi Sigma, toured CU s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) A group of members toured a local optics company named Meadowlark. The event was coordinated by Jamie Shaw the Vice President. 2
4 CU Physics Building Demonstration We have been and are currently working with Sigma Pi Sigma on designing, building, and installing an optical microscopy demonstration for the physics building on campus. 3
5 Future Activities Our chapter has seen many members graduate in recent years. During this period of transition we have not had as many events as usual. However, our new leadership is dedicated and working hard to keep the chapter active and productive. We are planning the following events for the upcoming semesters: Maintain regular group meetings throughout the school year. Host an invited lecturer or series of lecturers. Organize student social events between our chapter, the CU OSA chapter, Sigma Pi Sigma, and other engineering organizations; e.g. a networking mixer with students, professors, and industry representatives. Tour one or more lab facilities, including our neighbors NREL, NIST, and/ or Biofrontiers. Host a LabVIEW and/ or Matlab workshop Design/ Build/ Install Microscopy Demo for Physics Building 4
6 Financial Information In the chart below we show our chapter s activity grant spending. Note, we did not receive an activity grant in The money spent indicated here is from leftover funds and university grants. Starting Funds from Arpil, 2013 $ Food for Election Party -$95.29 $ Refreshments for Meetings -$ $ Food for holiday party -$53.52 $ Awarded Funds +$ $ Further Refreshments for Meetings -$ $ Laser Tag Event -$ $ List of Additional Funding Sources ICAMP $6000 to send 3 SPIE members to the summer school in United Kingdom Student Government - $400 for general student group operations 5
