3 Detailed Chapter Activities Since Last Report 1. June 29, 2006 Student chapter meeting at Liquid Crystal Institute. We discussed our plan to attend SPIE annual meeting at San Diego of st International Liquid Crystal Conference was held from July 2-7, 2006 in the Rocky Mountain resort village of Keystone, Colorado located about 90 miles west of Denver. The conference was held under the auspices of of the International Liquid Crystal Society and organized by the Liquid Crystal Materials Research Center at the University of Colorado. Members of our chapter actively participated in this conference, including oral presentations and posters.

4 3. The SPIE annual meeting with also Optics & Photonics was held from August 13-17, 2006 in San Diego, CA. Our chapter president Fenghua Li and members attended this

5 conference. They also participated in the traditional Student Leadership Day, Meeting with distinguish scientists, SPIE educational scholarship award ceremony etc, as shown in pictures.

8 4. Boy Kent State! August, 2006 At Kent State Chapter, we continue our efforts to educate primarily and high school students in the field of optics, as a part of SPIE's K-12 outreach program. On August 22, a boy scouts team was given an interesting and instructing tour about optics and liquid crystals by our chapter members, Thomas Palermo, Bohdan Senyuk, Ebru Buyuktanir and Fenghua Li. Different vivid and life-real demonstrations were utilized in order for the boys to easily understand, as shown in the following pictures. Hand-on experiences also enhanced their understanding the subjects. The boy scouts were also shown scientific instruments in the research, for example, polarized microscope to observe the textures of the liquid crystals and function generator to switching the liquid crystals etc. The teachers believe that the kids enjoyed this tour and learned a lot from it; they are also very interested in having similar tours in the near future.

September 21, 2006 LCI first-ever university site for International Display Research Conference On September 18, Kent State University s Liquid Crystal Institute hosted the first laboratory-based workshops for the 26th International Display Research Conference (IDRC) sponsored by the Society for Information Display (SID). The workshops, featuring hands-on presentations of display technology, kicked-off an outstanding week of presentations focused on developing and emerging technologies. This marks the first time that the IDRC took place in a university setting. One success was the Open House held Wednesday night at the Liquid Crystal Materials Sciences Building. Attendees were treated to a tour of the LCI labs, student posters, a Kent Displays, Inc. exhibit, wine, appetizers and a string quartet. Members of our chapter actively participated in this conference, including volunteering to organize the oral presentations and posters. In addition, our members also volunteered to prepare and setup the open house tour in Liquid Crystal Institute..

17 Details of Activities Planned for Future We will actively maintain our chapter s good standing, advertising members academic research strength, attract more new students into members and broaden the network of collaborations and communications. The following is a brief list of planed activities: 1. Apply for SPIE grants and scholarships available to chapter and individual chapter members to support travel and research activities. The institutes fund is our major goal this year. 2. Actively participate in conferences in the fields of Optics, Chemistry, Engineering, Physics and Applications of Liquid Crystals. 3. Continue to have outreach for local high school in collaboration with the Great Lake SPIE Chapter. 4. Attracting undergraduate students from Physics and Chemistry by giving seminars, tours and interactive communications. 5.
