3 Detailed Chapter Activities Since Last Report 1. On Apr. 12, 2007, former president of our chapter, Fenghua Li, has held a meeting for re-elect the officers. In the fruitful meeting, there were 17 members attending this meeting and we had a very intense competition for each position because at least two candidates enter the nominations. We voted the officers for each position. The big news is that we have a first ever new female president! Our new officers: President: Shin-Ying Lu Vice President: Hari Atkuri Secretary: Jeremy Neal Treasurer: John Harden shin@lci.kent.edu hatkuri@kent.edu jneal@lci.kent.edu jharden@lci.kent.edu Congratulations to all the new officers! In the future, we hope that Kent State Chapter will continue to make big contributions in SPIE society. In the meeting, we accept the suggestion that each member s membership number should not be present on the website. So, we decide to remove these membership numbers. In addition, the new officers expressed their initial plans that this student chapter will continue the outreach activities in the future based on the fact that our chapter had good experiences and well-built outreach tool packages. Furthermore, they plan to recruit more members especially from Physics department since one of the officers is from Physics. We also discussed that we are going to have a student meeting on June to prepare for the 2007 annual San Diego SPIE conference.
4 2. We held another student chapter meeting on May 3, ) Secretary Jeremy mentioned that everybody needs to renew memberships in order to get more chapter funding. For the new members, the chapter will support $10 for the first year membership fee. 2) We discussed our plan to the annual San Diego SPIE conference. The officer traveling fund will be split evenly. So far, Shin, Bohdan, Shawn are interested in attending the conference. 3) Treasurer Report: $1658 remaining in current account 4) SPIE Field trip possibilities: COSI wins plan trip for ~1 month from now SPIE pays gas members pay entrance fee $12.50 Future: GLSC, Inventure Place, Cle. Museums Hari: Work on private planetarium show for SPIE. 5) Student research presentations We decided that before or after meetings from now on, there will be a student presentation to introduce some recent student research results. John will go first ~20 minutes before next meeting 6) Little Scientist Day Committee: Jeremy, John, Shin, Hari, Fenghua, Feng LCI may provide 50% funding. Professor Oleg Lavrentovich likes the idea. And we will meet on 12:30 for planning 7) Names of SPIE students to appear on website: the membership number and will not appear on website. 8) Chapter meetings will be held on Monday/Tuesday from now on. 9) Oleg would like us to work on getting quality new students for the CPIP program. 10) Possible collaborations with other student chapters. SPIE have funding to support chapter collaborations. In addition, SPIE has $5000 research grants available. We will plan to apply for more funding to make our chapter more active. Details of Activities Planned for Future We will actively maintain our chapter s good standing, advertising members academic research strength, attract more new students into members and broaden the network of collaborations and communications. The following is a brief list of planed activities: 1. Apply for SPIE grants and scholarships available to chapter and individual chapter members to support travel and research activities. The institutes fund is our major goal this year. 2. Actively participate in conferences in the fields of Optics, Chemistry, Engineering, Physics and Applications of Liquid Crystals. 3. Continue to have outreach for local high school in collaboration with the Great Lake SPIE Chapter. 4. Attracting undergraduate students from Physics and Chemistry by giving seminars, tours and interactive communications.
