3. Chapter Activities During the year, we held a couple invited lecturers and elected the new cabinet for the year. The new cabinet held its first meeting on August 25, Recruitment, the Fall Interest/Welcome Meeting, forming a chapter website, and transferring fund management from Kendra to Nick were discussed. The cabinet held its second meeting on September 22, Fall Interest/Welcome Meeting date was established as October 8, 2014, and tasks for this meeting were delegated to the various officers. Additionally, potential guest speakers were discussed with a choice of inviting Dr. Saleh from UCF being decided. The cabinet held its third meeting on October 6, 2014, in which the plans and the presentation for the Fall Interest/Welcome Meeting were finalized. The chapter held its first meeting of the year on October 8, 2013 as a welcome meeting to recruit new members and discuss the benefits for members. 3a. Invited Talk - Dr. David Peters On March 5, 2014 Dr. David Peters from Sandia National Laboratories gave an invited talk at Georgia Tech about Next Generation Infrared Imaging at Sandia National Labs. Our chapter provided logistical and advertising support. 3b. Invited Talk - Dr. Kartik Srinivasan On April 7, 2014 Georgia Tech OSA hosted Dr. Kartik Srinivasan with logistical and advertising support from our Chapter to give a talk on Manipulating the Color and Shape of Single Photons. 3c. Officer Elections On April 11, 2014, the officer elections were held. Electronic votes were cast prior to the meeting if a member could not be in attendance. The results of the elections were as follows: President: Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer: Domenic Carr Kendra Albers <open> Nicholas Guida Since no members wanted to be Secretary, we decided to move forward without a Secretary until the Fall Semester began or until a member indicated interest in assuming that role. On August 25, 2014, Lakshmi Raju was nominated to be Secretary and was voted in.
3d. Midsummer Brown-bag Get-Together On July 7, 2014 the Chapter hosted an optional lunch get-together at the Georgia Tech student center. The attending members discussed plans and potential speakers for the upcoming year. 3e. SPIE Optics & Photonics Conference Officer Travel Grant From August 15-22, Domenic Carr and Nicholas Guida attended the SPIE Optics & Photonics Conference in San Diego, California as part of the Officer Travel Grant funding. Domenic and Nicholas attended the Student Leadership Workshop on Saturday, August 16, and attended many of the courses and workshops offered free for students. Domenic made a powerpoint presentation of their experiences in San Diego and has plans to make this available to students in the GaTech chapter. Nicholas Guida (left) and Domenic Carr (right) attend SPIE O&P 2014 in San Diego, CA. 3f. Fall Welcome/Interest Meeting On October 8, 2014, the chapter hosted its 2014 Fall Welcome/Interest Meeting. Twenty current and prospective members attended the meeting. The cabinet provided pizza and sodas for the event. During the meeting, a 10-minute presentation was made by the cabinet regarding planned activities for the semester and the benefits of joining SPIE as a student member. 4. Chapter Outreach on Campus On September 22, 2014, the Chapter formed a new website through Georgia Tech s Student Activities Center (jacketpages.gatech.edu) to enhance visibility on campus. Students on campus can now search for SPIE GaTech Chapter, find us, and request information or membership into the chapter.
On September 29 and 30 and on October 1, the cabinet spoke at four separate Optics & Photonics classes being offered during the semester. The cabinet emphasized the benefits of joining SPIE as a student member and promoted the Welcome/Interest Meeting on October 8. The cabinet continues to maintain its website on Facebook to reach out to Chapter members and the GT Optics and Photonics community. (
5. Chapter Outreach in Community Members of the GaTech chapter assisted with The Laser Project, a traveling exhibit of lasers to teach children about lasers and get them excited about science. Mostly the exhibits stay in the Atlanta area and travel to various elementary or middle schools. On March 11, 2014 we brought the exhibits to Crabapple Middle School, and March 29, 2014 we presented at the Atlanta Science Festival. On April the exhibits traveled to Washington D.C. for the USA Science and Engineering Festival. The exhibits include: Laser Ray Box: A box of 40 led lasers, fog, and lenses allows kids to trace a laser ray from one end of the box to the other and then insert lenses to see how the rays travel through objects. There are positive lenses, negative lenses, triangular prisms, and rectangular prisms for the children to experiment with.
Replica of the first ruby laser: The replica shows the different parts of a laser, the ruby rod material, the flash lamp, the end mirror, the output coupler, and the electrode. Laser Telephones: Two telephones that are set up so voices are transmitted along a laser to sensors at the other phone. You can then block the laser so kids can see the laser and simultaneously won t be able to hear the person on the other end. Lasers In Your Life: This exhibit shows examples of lasers that are used every day such as barcode scanning, DVD players, and fiber optics. Laser Fountain: There are three colored lasers set up behind a box of water and then the water flows out of the box at such an angle the laser experiences total internal reflection and
bounces around inside the water until the water experiences turbulence. Transmission Speckle: A box with a laser and ground glass to demonstrate laser speckle. Children can move the ground glass up, down, and sideways to see how the size of speckles change and how the direction of speckles sideways change based on which side of the focal point you are on.
Laser Show: Children are able to make a laser show by moving laser light. One side the children move two mirrors to make the laser light dance around. Another side the children twist knobs that control the actuators for two mirrors to make the laser light dance around. The last side the children use a keyboard to type in a message that will be written in laser light.
Helium Neon open-frame laser: A He-Ne laser with the cavity open so the children can move the mirror at one end of the cavity. By changing the cavity length, the different modes of the laser can be seen. Hologram: There is a hologram so kids can learn about how to make 3D pictures. Fraunhofer Diffraction: A wheel with different opening show how laser light is diffracted through a single slit, a double slit, wire mesh, or hair on your finger. 6. Planned Activities We have invited Dr. Saleh from UCF to speak using the SPIE Invited Guest Lecturer funds. We are currently waiting for his response. This event will either be in Late November, or Mid-January, based on the timeliness of Dr. Saleh s response and his availability. We have discussed submitting a proposal for International Year of Light Outreach funding for our work with The Laser Project. We are currently in talks with the managers of The Laser Project to discuss how funding could best be used. Possible ideas are helping with the upkeep of exhibits if needed and/or creating new exhibits in their program based off of ideas Domenic and Nicholas saw at the Student Outreach Games in San Diego. 7. Financial Report Starting Balance (Aug. 2014): $ (Carry over from previous year) Major Expenses (Fall 2014): SPIE Interest Meeting $47.52 Income:
