1 IN THIS ISSUE Ray Yannello District Governor SUBJECT PAGE DG Calendar 6 Welcome Lions 7 Farewell Lions 8 Children First 9 & 10 Tech Expo 11 Fellow Lions, We are two months into the year already and there is so much more I wanted to have completed by now. Time flies when you are having fun. With 20 visits under my belt I ve heard one consistent concern from our members: When will the District and MD web sites be updated. The district web site is being updated as we speak. Updated this past month the Proud Lion/Proud Sponsor form, an updated Sight & Hearing listing, an updated Club Bulletin Contest rules, updated District Achievement Instructions, and the current Policy & Procedure Manual with all changes. We hope to have the updated State Achievement Award, Scrapbook Contest, & Website Contest forms by end of September. I submitted updated club information to the State Secretary /Treasurer and it has been updated. Working on a handful of other changes which should also be completed by the end of September. 2 Does anyone really need the Knight s Vision? This publication takes a lot of work and effort to assemble and distribute. My concern over the years has been to see if anyone really reads it and the messages from the District Leadership. Let us know if we should drop it or keep it. MMRs: Well 47 of 56 clubs submitted their July Monthly Membership Report on-time. Two clubs submitted late reports, which cost them each an extra $21.50 in dues for members dropped in the late report. Any club willing to throw away $43 is welcome to send it to me. August was much better with 51 clubs submitting on-time MMRs ACHIEVEMENT REPORTS: 45 clubs filed a report for July and 42 for August. Only four clubs picked up the bonus for the magic word and this month the magic word is patunia for fifty points. That s correct, it is spelled wrong. Clubs are NOT required to participate and have the option to opt-out, however, the reports do provide the District Leadership with a lens into what the clubs are doing. For those clubs completing the reports, thank you. LCI SERVICE REPORTS: I am sure that all 56 clubs are completing all four of the service projects of the Centennial Service Challenge. They just aren t reporting to LCI. This is an important of being part of the larger good and living up to the motto, We Serve. Please report completion of your service projects to LCI. It reflects great credit on our District and your club. FALL CONFERENCE: I only have ten visits scheduled in September. Seems light after a fifteen visit August, but I m also wedging in our first Council of Governor s meeting and our District Fall Conference. The success or failure of our Conference depends on the membership. It is a full weekend of activities, training, and social events, starting with Friday Nights Ride m Cowboy dinner. Our Saturday morning training includes the normal Secretary/Treasurer and President training, along with classes on Blood Sugar Screening/Certification, SPOT Training/Certification, Lions Alert (Disaster Planning), State Redistricting, 24D Charity Foundation, LAMP Trailer Utilization/Certification, Leo Club training, and the coup de grace, a Membership Class being conducted by International Director Jerome Thompson. WORLDWIDE WEEK OF SERVICE: Our first Worldwide Week of Service is over, but the next one is right around the corner, October 4-10 is the Worldwide Week of Service in Sight. Plan a vision or sight project and join Lions around the globe in preventing curable vision loss and restoring vision for those that need help. Use your imagination and plan an event now. Help us, help others. In closing I d be remiss if I didn t thank all those that came before me. I have learned a lot over the years from many Lions and non-lions alike. I take the crumbs of information left behind and use that to create my own ideas. I know, sometimes I m way out-of-line, but I am trying. I ve seen many Lions depart this life for the next and I look at their many years of service as laying the foundation for what I am doing today. While at Williamsburg Host this week and at many clubs I see the club banners with the names of PDGs I never knew, but realize they too served our District with all their heart and love for the Community at large. We can only hope to live up the legacy provided by those before us. Take an opportunity to thank our long serving older Lions. They deserve an extra handshake and a pat on the back for a job well done. DG Ray Yannello Your Raging Bull 2

3 Tucker Casanova 1 st Vice District Governor after a great evening of with our fellow Lions you can retire to your room, no stress Try it, spending evenings with not just Lions you know but guests that stop by. What could be better than hanging out with your friends & meeting new Lions in a relaxed atmosphere knowing you can just pop back to your room when done? Last year I had to go to work at about 2 AM after Lion Ray s Hospitality room I had a good time but couldn t really cut loose. Not that having a room this year means I m going to start running around with a lampshade on my head probably. I hope I got a chance to talk to everybody at the Lions Eye Bank Annual Dinner. Sometimes I don t get to visit with everyone I d like since half the district is usually there as well as my co-workers, our guests, as well as my counterparts at other like-minded organizations. Sometimes all that company means I get spread a little thin. Excuses aside, I hope I at least got the chance to say hi, and you had a good time. Of all our guest speakers, I think Mrs. Zena Ward was one of the best. She had one of the most memorable presentations in the dinner s history. To hear her commit so strongly to the cause of donation makes me think that even if you didn t catch her this time you ll see her again soon enough. I mentioned co-workers a minute ago we had the honor to introduce my good friend Donna Stephens to the world of Melvin Jones Fellows. A hard worker and an organizer of many of the most visual events the Eye Bank puts on; Donor Family Luncheons, Annual dinners and others. She has done a great deal to spread the cause of Lionism in her more than 17 years at the LMEB. Since she tends to avoid the spotlight, a few of us felt it was well past time she received some of the recognition she s earned. Congratulations Donna! With as much going on at the dinner it would have been easy to overlook a flier going around for an intriguing event The Suffolk Art Gallery, is currently showcasing an exhibit entitled Please Touch the Art, the work of artist Sally Barker. Mrs. Barker is the creator of The B-Code, a system of color and texture pairings done in fabric, enabling the blind to enjoy works of art. Details about the B- Code are available on line at If you are interested, please check it out. The exhibit will be running through September 10 th. The gallery days and hours are Tuesday Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday, 1 p.m.-5 p.m. This is exactly the kind of event the Lions should be supporting, so if you can please attend and introduce yourself who knows what kind of collaboration we could achieve or future projects we can learn about or even be a part of! Yours in Lionism, Lion Tucker Casanova Get a Room! No really, get a room the Fall Conferences are upon us and every room that s reserved give us more negotiating power each and every year, even if you live locally you ll get a great room at a lower price, a base of operations where you can keep your good clothes or can do a quick change into something more comfortable before heading to the hospitality room. Speaking of, 3

8 The 24-D Youth Exchange Committee extends its deep appreciation to Lion Herb Harlow of the Cradock Lions Club for 34 years of continuous service to youth from around the world. Lion Herb was on the committee establishing the first John M. White Youth Exchange Camp in He was the last remaining active charter member, whose assistance over the years was integral to the program's multiple Top Ten Awards from Lions International. As recently as 2014, Lion Herb continued to make arrangements for both the students' fishing trip on the Chesapeake Bay and bowling at Victory Lanes. He joined students each year on the head boat, cutting up watermelon and passing around lemonade on inevitably the hottest afternoon of the summer. He recently moved to the Front Royal area to be near family, and can be reached though the Cradock Lions Club. Please keep the following Lions and their family in your prayers. Each will be missed in their own special way as they departed in August for the Lions Pride beyond the sunset: Emery Haynie, Lancaster, 68 years Gene Beacham, Southside, 58 years Pete Kassab, Little Creek, 42 years Bill Knoble, Oyster Point Mariner, 27 years DG Ray 8

9 Expanding Children First Services through New Clubs Each and every day Lions are answering the call to serve children in need throughout the world. Your projects give children hope for the future and help them grow up safe and healthy, with the opportunity to reach adulthood. Current statistics reveal that millions of children make their way through life impoverished, abandoned, uneducated, malnourished, and discriminated against, neglected and vulnerable. The need for health and education services is constant and universal. A glimpse at these numbers may create an impression that so many children cannot be helped. However, the sight of a child suffering in our midst always creates a deeper impression this child must be helped! More and more, Lions are meeting the distressed, yet hopeful, gaze of the children nearest them. Lions have demonstrated care and compassion by putting children first. Rooted in communities across the world, Lions are helping through food and clothing drives for children in poverty, recreational activities for children with illnesses, camps for children with special needs, reading programs for children and countless other projects. By responding to the specific needs of children in their respective communities, Lions are making a difference, one child at a time. Lions everywhere are encouraged to organize hands-on service projects to address essential needs, where perhaps no services exist. Through Lions Children First, you can mobilize the community to build awareness and join in our association s efforts to provide hope and help to underserved children. Lions are needed now more than ever. To help form a new Children First Lions Club or Branch Club- Contact PCC Gary Rapier 24D Extension or pccgarymd24@cox.net 9

17 Sign Found Is this your Lions Club s Sign? On my travels throughout 24-D, I came across this Lions Club highway sign. It sat off the road about 12 feet in a thicket of vines in the wods. The club it belongs to is a very active club in our District. Highway signs are another way to advertise and promote your Lions Club in the community. It allows people to know when and where you meet. So potential members or visitors can come and visit your club. If you can identify the Lions Club that this sign belongs to, the District will provide a free highway emblem decal to give your sign and this one a new facelift. to me, PDG Donna Weiler, with your answer at weiler2020@cox.net. Only one entry per club. The winner will be announced in the following month s Knight s Vision. 17

HELEN KELLER THE PERFECT TEN In 2013, the United States Treasury Department had announced that an American woman s image will be placed on the new $10 bill, scheduled to be introduced by 2020 (the 100th anniversary of the passage of the nineteenth amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which gave women the right to vote). The Treasury has invited public input into which woman that should be. The Helen Keller Foundation wants the redesigned $10 bill to bear the image of the Alabama-born woman who overcame blindness and deafness to become an international voice for the disabled and goodwill ambassador. Keller became an author and advocate for the rights of women and workers as well as the blind and disabled. She received the Presidential Medal of Honor in Time magazine named her one of the 100 most important people of the 20th Century. In 1925, she attended the Lions Clubs International Convention and challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness." 21 By Travers Eubank - July 31, 2015 Congressman Rob Wittman and Barbara Food Truck Friday: A Feeding Frenzy The streets of Kilmarnock were grid locked. People strolled the sidewalks, shoulder to shoulder; breaking the traditional small town visage that normally permeates the quaint Steptoe s district. Cars queued at lights for a quarter mile in either direction. It was apparent that Food Truck Friday had given the town a taste of excitement. As I meandered up Main St., I first encountered Barbara s Hot Dog Cart. A fifteenperson line sprawled in front of me, a line that would have been daunting, had it not been for the delicious aroma seeping into the streets. After a surprisingly short wait, aided by the out-going and friendly members of the community eager to get their free hot dog and drink, I finally reached the front of Barbara s long, serpentine line. Her food truck is clearly designed for efficiency, organized in a system so ingrained in muscle memory that she barely looks down while assembling multiple orders at once. Within an instant, I had my free hot dog and drink; courtesy of Dr. Harold Weiler and Old Dominion Eye Care, one of many local businesses lending their support to local food trucks by donating 200 hot dogs and drinks free of charge to both Barbara s Hot Dog Stand and Terrie s Place and the hot dog was delicious. I joined a couple as they journeyed further up Main St., excited to see what the larger, Terrie s Place, had to offer. As we approached, it became apparent that Barbara wasn t alone in being busy. Crowds of anxious eaters surrounded the trailer, clamoring to get their free hot dog and drink; and to register for a free pair of Ray Ban sunglasses that the Tappahannock Lions Club was raffling off, free of charge, courtesy of Old Dominion Eye Care s Optical Shop. Gary Rapier, a local resident and member of the Deep Creek Lions Club helped with the raffle and was involved in crowd control and clean up with other members of the Lions Club. Unlike Barbara s, Terrie s Place featured a full menu of sandwiches, burgers and hot dogs. As I was trying to decide what to get for my second serving; I noticed something very interesting about the chalkboard-menu. Many items featured a sponsor in their names. I tracked down an employee taking a break and asked how this marketing ploy came about; I discovered it is a truly symbiotic relationship. They advertisements were free. At long last, approached the front of the ever-growing line, I got one of the best BLTs I ve ever had. Terrie s Place 21
