Pam Kidwell District Governor I finally see the signs of spring - tulips, daffodils, and trees are beginning to bloom warm weather cannot be far behind! Just as everything is bursting to bloom so are we as Lions. This is the month to grow our membership and BLOOM with so many service projects being offered by our clubs. There is something for everyone. April 11 th is Chairman Mary Durbin s Journey for Sight. This should be very exciting and a lot of fun at the same time. We will take part in races and try to compete as if we are visually impaired and experience for a short while what they experience every day. An excellent service project for a potential new lions take part in. April 18 th is the Districts Leadership Day, an opportunity for all new officers and interested Lions to find out a little more about the positions in the club. There will be President s, Secretary s, Treasurer s, Region and Zone schools that I am aware of. Also, a membership school to help all club membership chairs have an opportunity to hear how critical membership is to our organization and the latest incentive ideas and training tools available to them. April 25 th is our Youth and Family Diabetes Camp Lion Debbie Edwards and PCC Chet Cramer have worked all year to make this camp a huge success for children with diabetes and their parents. This is another excellent opportunity for potential Lions to experience how Lions support the diabetes awareness program to our youth and communities. April 26 th is another excellent opportunity to bring potential lions out to walk on the board walk at Virginia Beach and support the SUBJECT IN THIS ISSUE PAGE District Contest 5 Calendar 6 Centennial Service Tracker 7 Centennial Challenge 8 Region I Bland 9 Region II Bland 10 Publicity 11 Journey for Sight 12 Audible Easter 13 Egg Hunt Leadership Trng 14 Kempsville Golf 15 & 16 Tappahannock 17 Golf Vision Magnifiers 18 LCF Bid n Buy 19 & Intl Theme 21 & 22 1

Vision Walk challenge. This is a project very near and dear to my heart. If you have ever known anyone with visual problems, i.e. glaucoma, macular degeneration, or retinal disease, then this may be one that you want to support. I would like to see District 24D raise $55,000 to help with the research to find a cure for eye disease. Join your fellow lions in the Lions Pride team, come walk, run, jog whatever but have fun doing it. Supporting this worthwhile cause to help fund research to find a cure for eye disease would make Helen Keller proud and help your Lion s organization make a difference! Another great opportunity to meet, greet, enjoy fellowship and test your skills are the several golf tournaments planned as fund raiser projects by Kempsville, Tappahannock and Lancaster Lions Clubs. Imagine if these clubs supported each other? New friends, new golf courses, potential new members where could we go with this??? Let s support each other, nothing to lose but lots to gain! Remember, our International President s request to support World Wide Service Week May 16-22, 2015 and start that service project planning now! Hope to see you at these projects, laughing, having fun and participating so until then stay safe, happy and productive Lions! POSITIVE ATTITUDES MOTIVATE DG Pam 2

Tucker Casanova 2nd Vice District Governor Hello Lions! I want to start out by thanking everyone for their support and encouragement in recommending me for the Advanced Lions leadership Training in Calgary, Alberta Canada. The first thing many of you asked me when I got back from this intensive training session with other Lions from all over North America was naturally, How cold was it? It was fine. Really. Nicer than in Va. somehow one day I left my coat in my room and took a walk. The second question I get is a little more engaging, What did you learn? That s better! I learned a lot, too much to go into here. Feel free to approach me and I ll take the time to go over what I can with you one on one, but even if I can t cover specifics with you in person I will be sharing it all with you through my leadership and strategies to strengthen our numbers and make us a more visible organization. That said, if I could pick one thing I learned to share right now it would be this; I found that I could work with people I never met from all walks of life while separated by literally thousands of miles. The preassignment project we were given months before we started. It required five of us to work together and create a project for an imaginary club. Lions from Denver, British Columbia, Calgary, Chicago, and Norfolk had to coordinate over , phone and Skype to make our project a success. Our final idea, a technology based scholarship/training program to inspire youth to get into STEM and encourage tech businesses to come to our town was very well received. As were the others. Something else real quick before I go Some of you are aware that in my spare time I have been working on a district map. Some of you have even provided input to help me make it more accurate. If you could please check out this link: google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zoq57tweqdka.k EJUn9iXy8dw Uhh hold on. I can do better than that there we go: tinyurl.com/24dservicearea Right! Check out that link and let me know what changes need to be made. Con t next page 3

Oh, and be sure you are looking at the real map and not just the preview. You ll know the difference when you see it Thanks Lions! I m looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Tyson s Corner for the State Convention! Don t forget to register ASAP! Yours in Lionism, Lion Tucker C, Actual Work in progress 4

Lions of 24D, here is the current Tracker showing how we are doing around the world toward our goal of 100 million acts of service by our 100 th Anniversary of Lions. Each of the 4 areas of service is shown. Our progress is right on track but all Club Secretaries must be sure to send in their LCI Service Activity Report monthly and be certain to report all the great service projects we do in 24D. Keep up the great work! Why not start your own Club Centennial Service Challenge Tracker? PID Hauser, Centennial Service Challenge Chair 7

The environment is a major concern for communities and people around the world. During the last century alone, the world lost more than 80 percent of its original forests, which provide a source of livelihood, protection from natural disasters and absorb carbon dioxide emissions that lead to global warming. Lions have an opportunity to bring attention to the environment and show the strength of our worldwide network during a special service action campaign, Protecting our Environment. Protect the Environment to benefit 25 million people and be part of the Centennial Service Challenge! During April, we invite your club to join Lions around the world to protect the environment. Help us raise awareness on the importance of protecting the environment in connection with Earth Day on April 22, From collecting used newspapers and plastic bottles, to planting trees and cleaning our roads and waterways. Lions everywhere are participating in environmental service projects that make the world are a healthier, greener, safer place. Environment Project Ideas Plant trees. Create a sustainable community garden. Organize a beach or riverbank clean-up project. Organize a roadside clean-up project. Establish a school-wide recycling program Raise awareness about the benefits of going green. Remove debris from a nature trail. Gather clothing from your community members and donate them to a local shelter. Volunteer at a recycling center. 8

Lions Magazine Article Submission Lions Provide Vision Aid to Emergency Room Patients Submitted by: PDG Donna Weiler In July of 2014, the Lions of Virginia District 24-D approved a Lions Vision Magnifier Program. This program provides Emergency Rooms patients at our local hospitals throughout our district the ability to read papers and documents when their eyeglasses are broken, missing or they just are not available. The concept of this program began when Lion Timothy Marinelli had a heart attack and was rushed to a nearby hospital. He didn t have his eyeglasses with him in the Emergency Room. Upon admittance, the hospital staff asked him to sign medical release forms, authorizations and insurance data. Without glasses he could not read the documents. Lion Tim came back home to Smithfield, Virginia and began to think about this situation and others to which this had happened. He, along with Second VDG Tucker Cassanova, developed a Lions Vision Magnifier. The magnifier is the size of a credit card. It is made of plastic and has a 5X magnifier. Most suppliers carry only the 3X Magnifier. The patient can move the magnifier closer or further way to adjust for their reading correction. The cards have the Lions Logo, and state Compliments of your local Virginia Lions Clubs printed on them with a Lions QR code. The QR code will take you the web address indicated at the bottom of the card. Lion Tim also added a cautionary message: Use for Reading Only. The Vision Magnifiers are small enough to be kept on every room cart in the Emergency Room of the Hospitals. Since the adoption of this program, The Lions of 24-D have distributed over 2000 Lions Vision Magnifiers and they are currently in all the Emergency Rooms of the Riverside Hospital System and the Sentara Hospital System. covering both Southeast Virginia and Northeast North Carolina. 18

Highlights of the International Theme: Dignity. Harmony. Humanity. Every year, thousands of small cranes cross over the Himalayas at an altitude of 8000 meters for their seasonal migration. These demoiselle cranes are the smallest crane species, and their survival during this grueling migration depends upon the cooperation, teamwork, family structure, and harmony between every member of the flock. In Japan, the crane has traditionally been a symbol of long life. In the Japanese art of origami, the crane is the most basic form that all children learn how to make. The custom of folding origami cranes is a meditative act that shows the heartfelt wishes of friends and family for the ill to become well again. The crane has also become known as a symbol of peace not only in Japan, but around the world. Peace, hope, determination, teamwork and uniting people through service are central elements of the presidential theme Dignity. Harmony. Humanity. Dignity through Humanitarian Service One of the basic tenets of human dignity and self-respect is the ability to provide for oneself and for one s family, yet millions of people face the future with little hope of bettering their lives and caring for their children. Making a difference through service to children will continue to be a main focus area this year by strengthening or expanding our existing programs with the Children s Dignity Initiative. Under this initiative, Lions are encouraged to expand service to children by: Supporting and brightening the outlook of children in hospitals Responding to the needs of children in refugee camps Addressing the needs of hungry children Continuing and expanding the Reading Action Program Those are only a few of the many services opportunities that address the needs of children. More information about the Children s Dignity Initiative will be available on Serving others. Our legacy of service has been cultivated for almost 100 years. In order to reach our Centennial Service Challenge goal of serving 100 million people between now and June 30, 2018, we must triple our output of service in those areas and continue to encourage clubs to report their efforts via the Service Activity Report in MyLCI. In serving others, we are changing the world and sowing the seeds of harmony, understanding and peace. Harmony through Cultural Exchange and Joint Global Projects As an international association, we must understand and appreciate cultures unlike our own. District governors and council chairpersons are encouraged to connect with each other internationally to seek opportunities for joint international service projects. Clubs are also encouraged to participate in this 21

initiative through our Twinning program. Interacting with members from different cultures and with different points of view will broaden our outlook and provide inspiration for activities in our own communities. More Members Equals More Service Our members and our clubs are the heart of our organization, and to continue to serve, we must continue to grow our membership. Our growth depends on many factors, including a dynamic Global Membership Team, effective marketing strategies coupled with membership growth programs, dedicated leaders beginning at the club level, and outreach to women and family members. Together, we have built our membership to nearly 1.4 million, and must continue that growth to stay relevant in our next century of service. Be open to new ideas, and work with the members of your Global Membership Team and Global Leadership Team to find new ways to promote growth, engage members through service, and develop leaders. Club Presidents Hold the Keys to Our Success Club presidents are critical to our success as an association. Each club president will be encouraged to transform the atmosphere of their clubs so that members feel confident and work in unison with each other and their communities. Ask One Begins at Home Share your commitment and enthusiasm for Lions with your family members. Families that serve together as Lions establish a family tradition of serving others. The Ask One membership campaign starts at home. If Lions families are on the front lines serving their communities, we will gain the recognition we deserve as the greatest service organization in the world. LCIF Restoring Dignity, Promoting Harmony, Serving Humanity LCIF is at the heart of our worldwide service, using grants to create goodwill, eliminate human suffering, and restore hope and dignity for people around the world. Lions are asked to take every opportunity to support LCIF with your generous donations and Melvin Jones Fellowships. District governors-elect, as we approach our centennial celebration and strive to serve the needs of others, let us always remember to respect the dignity of those we serve; that serving others is not only an act of kindness, but also a means to build understanding and harmony; and that serving humanity is not a duty, but our responsibility.
