Alcohol and substance use are on the increase in the Muslim population in Tower Hamlets, which is creating huge issues in families and a great deal of concern that traditional family structures are beginning to break down. Young people usually become homeless to get away from a desperate family situation. They often have many problems such as with drugs, alcohol or mental health. Moving On provides them with the help needed to find somewhere to live and supports them so they have a chance to take hold of their lives and make their own choices. Many of the homeless young people staying at Darlington YMCA have severe mental health and/or drug problems. They have a mental health worker to work with these vulnerable young people in groups or one-to-one, providing the support they need to begin to take control of their lives and avoid becoming homeless again. Blackpool has a large number of disadvantaged and vulnerable young people affected by drug use, which is made worse by homelessness, exclusion from school, youth crime and antisocial behaviour. This project provides young people with one-to-one, face-to-face support to help them work through their difficulties and get their lives back on track.
