1 JOB DESCRIPTION POST: DIVISION: RESPONSIBLE TO: SALARY: Sessional Support Worker Children and Family Services Project Worker per hour Children 1st Vision, Mission and Values A happy, healthy, safe and secure childhood for every child and young person in Scotland. Our core values guide how each one of us works in our individual day to day job: Respect - Treating everyone with respect and fairness Integrity - Being responsible and accountable Participation - Involving others in our work Excellence Striving for the highest possible standards GENERAL ROLE In consultation with the Service Manager and Project Worker, the sessional Support Worker role will be expected to promote the development and delivery of the Recovering Families Service for children and young people in the south of Glasgow by: Working in partnership with other members of the team, parents, children and young people in order to develop and deliver the Recovering Families Service. Work in partnership with other agencies in the south of Glasgow supporting parents in recovery either through group work or awareness raising activities.
2 Work collaboratively with children and young people to assess and identify their specific needs. Undertake work with children and young people individually, within their families and in groups as appropriate. Contribute towards effective and robust evaluation mechanisms and report back to the Project Worker and Service Manager as appropriate. KEY RESULTS AREAS Identification of and support for the needs of children and young people, who have experienced parental substance misuse and whose parents are now in recovery. Increase the resilience for this specific group of children and young people through activities which increase their confidence, self esteem and understanding of their family situation. Development and sharing of good practice across all services for children and young people in the local area, across Children 1st and nationally. Engage constructively with partner agencies such as Education, Social Work and other voluntary organisations who operate in the local area. ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES To be committed and adhere to Children 1st vision, mission and values. To comply with Children 1st Child Protection and Adult Protection policies and procedures and with National Guidance. To comply with Children 1st code of conduct (All Children 1st staff) and Codes of Practice for Social Service Workers and Employers (specific to Children and Family Services Divisional staff). To actively consider the involvement of children, young people and families with whom we work, in all areas of practice and to implement the Children 1st Participation Standards. To actively consider the involvement of volunteers in all areas of our work and to implement the Children 1st Volunteer Development Policy. To observe all health and safety requirements. To work within and promote policies in relation to Equal Opportunities and antidiscriminatory practices. (Common Core ref: A1, A2)
3 ADDITIONAL DUTIES Any additional duties will normally be to cover unforeseen circumstances or changes in work, and will usually be compatible with the regular type of work. If an additional task or responsibility becomes a regular or frequent part of the job, it will be included in the job description in consultation with the post holder.
4 POST: Sessional Support Worker PERSON SPECIFICATION AREA ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE Qualifications Experience of the issues and difficulties felt children/young people who have previously experienced parental substance misuse A relevant SVQ or qualification which identifies an enthusiasm for learning Experience A track record of actively supporting families in recovery Evidence of an understanding of the importance of collaborative working Experience of group work and 1-1 support with parents/carers, children and young people Work within the voluntary sector. Knowledge / Skills Knowledge and understanding of the needs of this specific group of young people affected by parental substance misuse Working knowledge of other services providing support to this target group Knowledge and understanding of child protection and the responsibilities of any member of staff working with children and families Organisational and planning skills
5 Working knowledge of the relevant support networks available to families in the south of Glasgow. Ability to work flexibly Commitment to engaging hard to reach families Understanding and supportive approach to parents/carers, children and young people in difficulty. Communication Planning & Organising Team Working Ability to write short records of work and contribute to overall service recording. Effective communication and listening skills with parents/carers, children and young people Ability to work on own initiative and to access support and supervision appropriately Effective time management skills and ability to meet deadlines Ability to work as part of a team Ability to develop and maintain effective and supportive relationships Inter-agency liaison and communication skills Other Ability to work flexible hours in line with service delivery requirements, which will include evening and weekend work Commitment to Children 1st vision, mission and values Current driving Licence and access to own vehicle
