1 Rotary Club of Bendigo South Signpost Volume 60, No June 2018 Meets Thursdays at 6pm for 6.30pm at the Foundry Hotel High Street Golden Square. Rotary Making a Difference bendigosouthrotary.org.au President s report Club meeting 7 June Members thoroughly enjoyed the get to know you presentation by new member Kylee McCalman, chaired by Gary Pinner. Kylee took us through a pictorial history of Bendigo commencing with the establishment of Keck s nursery by her forebear Herbert Keck in the late 1800s. Not only innovative in his extensive nursery businesses, he represented the community for many years as a Councillor and Shire President and was an active supporter of the YMCA and Scouts. Kylee also told us about her husband Greg s great uncle, Eaglehawk identity Albert Roy. Kylee and Greg carry the same community focused genes, being active supporters of charitable causes, including hosting two youth exchange students following daughter Tarleya s Rotary youth exchange experience in Poland. I have a lot of respect for younger members like Kylee who can fit community service with Rotary into their busy lives as parents and full-time workers building their careers. It is probably an appropriate time to remind all members that the only expectation the club has of you is that you contribute to Rotary within your own capacity, acknowledging that we all have work, family, age, health or other priorities that come first. We heard an update on RC Rochester President Bryan Griffiths who is in hospital in Bendigo after surgery, and we wish him well in his recovery. We also heard that Zoe is having a great experience in South America see her message to members in this Signpost. June Board report We welcomed Lindsay Jackson as Acting International Service Director, and incoming Board members Ian Ellis and Tom Campbell, to the joint changeover June Board meeting. Issues addressed included: Couples memberships challenges and options. A process for evaluating and responding as promptly as possible to feedback from the member survey. Catering feedback will receive special attention in consultation with our Foundry Hotel hosts due to the wide diversity of views received. It will be hard to please everyone. An invitation from Steven Lee to assist with the Bendigo Legacy Junior Public Speaking Awards. Key goals for 2018/19. A proposal to assist with the Bendigo component of the biennial Garden DesignFest program managed by the Rotary Clubs of Kew, Brighton North, and Central Melbourne. Options to assist south western Victorian areas affected by fire during the D9800 District Conference. Adoption of the Annual Report.

2 Other news I am pleased to confirm that Strategem Investment Services has again agreed to provide sponsorship to the club for our Annual Report. We are grateful for their support, and I have attached their flyer for your information. Strategem can be traced back to Bill Ashman s earlier business practice, and I thank Strategem practitioner Andrew Palmer for his assistance. I would encourage members to read the Klingsmith Challenge article in the June RDU magazine. It reiterates the reasons why Rotary must continue to innovate and reinvent itself if it is to stay relevant and viable. It recognises that change is not easy, and provides some guidance to ensure that members are not alienated along the way. As always, I and the Board welcome your feedback. This week our guest speaker is Tashara Roberts, Indigenous Engagement and Capacity Building Officer at Bendigo TAFE, who will talk about her role supporting Indigenous students. See you then. Cheers Update from our South American correspondent Hi Rod. Nice to hear from you. I m doing great thanks. How is everything back home? At the moment I am in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica. I started working at the sloth institute last week and will be here for the next month. It s a tropical paradise here. I m living on the coast and working with sloths!!!!! Basically I track 2 and 3 toed sloths collecting behavioural data, prepare food for and watch hand raised (now wild) sloths and take habitat measurements. Despite being so slow sloths are incredibly hard to find!! Prior to arriving here I was in Ecuador at an animal refuge caring for monkeys, macaws, coatis and turtles and was also lucky enough to spend two weeks on the amazing Galápagos Islands. Other highlights of the trip have been Machu Picchu, the salt flats in Bolivia and the Amazon. Hope you are surviving the cold weather. Please say hi to everyone for me. Zoe Strengthen Your Clubs Workshops The District Support Team is conducting three facilitated workshops in August 2018, involving Warwick Cavell (Facilitator), Kerry Kornhauser OAM (Public Image/Communications), Yvonne Flynn (Club Service) and PDG Neville John (Membership Director).
