1 Volume 76 Issue 12 Tuesday 21 September 2010 Things to remember: District 9800 Bushfire Recovery Essendon Rotary Club in conjunction with Kangan Institute is in the process of planning a cocktail party/art show on Friday 12 November. Eighteen months after the February 2009 Bushfires the character our assistance is changing from provision of support to communities to an approach that seeks to encourage the survivors to take more control of their own situations. Nevertheless, there still remains great need for compassionate support for the many people who are suffering from post traumatic effects and the related negative consequences of that form of psychological impact. It is particularly pleasing to report that groups of D9800 Rotarians and their friends continue to devote time and effort to assist via face-to-face activities. The value associated with lending a hand to people who have lost their homes and have to still endure the difficulties associated with reestablishing their lives is very considerable. Volunteers who have helped in this way seem to have almost invariably felt that they have gained much themselves from the experience. Example areas of support to date include: - worked with Australian Rotary Health to help facilitate the establishment of $1m+ University of Melbourne research project: Bushfires, social connectedness and mental health - financial support to Marysville YMCA to re-open swimming pool - provision of transportable buildings to be used as a Music Room at Strathewen Community Centre - provision of a BBQ trailer to be used for catering at various events - Financial support for farm boundary fence reconstruction projects undertaken by Rotary teams working in the Kinglake, Marysville Triangle, and Gippsland areas. 2 Upcoming Committee Meetings Fellowship : Note the proposed Oct 2/3 weekend trip to Maldon has been postponed Strathmore Community Bank Sponsorship The Strathmore Community Bank has agreed to provide $10,000 in sponsorship to our Club for the current Rotary year. We are very privileged to receive this level of funding, due mainly to the value we have added in the past to projects involving the Strathmore Community Bank. The bank returns all profits to the community. Philip Stewart is the new branch manager, replacing Michael Maloney. Call in to the branch at 337 Napier Street Strathmore to discuss any banking needs. We will be visiting Bahay Tuluyan orphanage for Street Children, as well as meeting with our project partners, The Rotary Clubs of Los Banos Makiling, and Manila Maynilad Seafront. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Vocational talk/vocational Visit October Talk by Frank Forgione at luncheon meeting. New postal address is P O Box 347 Moonee Ponds 3039 and he can be contact by phone at work on or mobile on Youth Exchange: The district Youth Exchange committee has asked if we could host an exchange student from Brazil next year. The host club would be RC Moonee Valley. The duration of the hosting would be three months. A Rotarian is not required to be host parent, but a working with children card is required for all adults in the hosting household (this applies to Rotarian families as well). If you would like to help out or know of someone who would be suitable and willing to be involved please contact Peter Baker ASAP. If we cannot get a place for this exchange student then the exchange may be cancelled.

5 The Adelaide District Conference promises to be a memorable event in a superb location with wonderful speakers, fine wines, food and company everybody s perfect long weekend! Ten apartments have been booked for club members at the recently renovated Oaks Embassy Apartments on North Terrace, directly opposite the conference venue, the Adelaide Convention Centre. A dinner function has been arranged for Friday 1 April at Ayers House, Adelaide s most historic and exclusive function house.
