2 Information Packet 2011 Interfaith Build General Information Serving Together in Ministry Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ministry that invites people of all faiths and no faith to join in its mission to build simple, decent, affordable houses. Habitat is built on the Biblicall principles of obeying God, loving one another and caring for the poor. The Theology of the Hammer Habitat is a partnership founded on common ground- bridging theological differences by putting love into action. Everyone can use the hammer as an instrument to manifest God s love. We refer to this concept as the Theology of the Hammer. Although individuals may often disagree, everyone can agree on the mission of building homes with those in need. Furthermore, at Habitat, we believe in doing so using biblical economics: no profit and no interest. Habitat for Humanity welcomes alll people to build with us in partnership. Our faiths teach us that love should not exclude anyone. This understanding drives the Theology of the Hammer on Habitat for Humanity work sites around the world, as more and more houses are being built with those in need. What is the Interfaith Build? The Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County affiliate s Faith Relations Department is coordinating our Third Annual Interfaith Build Project a house sponsored and built in conjunction with a gathering of faith-based groups and organizations. We call it the Interfaith Build because we engage in the project believing that people in our faith communities will provide the finances and volunteer time necessary to help a family make their dream of home ownership a reality. In a nutshell, each church or faith-based group commits to doing its share, according to its size and resources, to build a home in partnership with a family in need. The Interfaith Build is a true demonstrationn of the Theology of the Hammer. This build is a partnership that will allow Mobile area churches and faith-based groups or organizations to fully fund and build a safe, decent affordable home with a Mobile family in need.

Where and when is the build? The build will kick off on September 8, 2011. The house location will be announced at a later time. Who can participate?

Organizations of all sizes and backgrounds are encouraged to participate and no prior Habitat experience is required.

You do not have to be a current Habitat Faith Partner to be a part of this exciting event. Organizations of all sizes and backgrounds are encouraged to participate and no prior Habitat experience is required. What will my organization have to do? Each Interfaith Partner Group will share the responsibilities of sponsoring this house. See the Levels of Partnership page in this packet for the different options of commitment. Habitatt staff will supervise construction, provide the required tools, order materials, handle inspections and hire sub- provide contractors. Benefits of an Interfaith Partnership There are numerous benefits to partnering with Habitat! The Interfaith Build is a great way to experience all the benefits of a house sponsorship, with only a portion of the responsibility (thanks to the help and support of many other partners along the way)! This appealing project provides a ministry of service with a beginning and an end that allows participants to put their faith into action and seee a tangible result. Another benefit of this partnership is the face-to-face time with the homeowner family. This important component of the Habitat experience allows participants to hear the family s story first hand, and realize the difference they are making in the lives of others while fostering their own faith. Ramona iss very active in her churcch community and Haabitat selected her as the 2010 Interfaaith Build family, she annd her son arre excited to be Habitat hom meowners. The T house was w started inn Septemberr 2010, and over o 30 grouups worked on o the projecct. A deddication cereemony was held h on Marcch 4, 2011 too welcome thhe Taliaferroo family to their new hom me. Ram mona and heer son, David d, continue to t support thheir Habitat family by working w on their neighbbors houuses. David spent his Sp pring Break working w withh volunteers from Indianna to compleete five otherr houses in his new neighbborhood.

5 Project Checklist Turn in Letter of Intent/Contact Form to Habitat Determine source of financial contribution (special offerings, fundraisers, etc.) Interfaith in Action Partners and Roof Raisers: Sponsorship money turned in to Habitat (due September 2011) Recruit volunteers for framing day Recruit 5-10 volunteers for finishing day Framing Friends: Take up special offering and bring to Habitat Make arrangements for lunch duty Make arrangements for devotion duty Attend the dedication!

6 Volunteer Information Required Skills: No prior construction experience is required to work on our site. Volunteers of all different skill levels are welcome to work with us. Age Restrictions: Volunteers ages 18 and older can work on all aspects of construction. Volunteers age 16 and 17 may do general construction and carpentry, but they may not do excavation, demolition, operate power tools, or do roof work. 14 and 15 year olds may do finishing work on the site, such as painting, or landscaping, but they cannot be on site when heavy construction (framing) is underway. Schedule: Work days are from 8 a.m. 4 p.m. with an hour-long lunch break in the middle of the day. We do ask all of our volunteers to arrive on time so that everyone is present for the morning safety meeting and devotion and so we can get the build day started promptly. What to Wear: In general, you should wear comfortable, breathable clothing that you don t mind getting dirty. In cooler weather you may want to bring along extra layers. During the summer months loose, cotton clothing is optimal. Shorts are permissible. Also, closed toe shoes such as work boots or tennis shoes are required. Anyone not wearing proper shoes will be asked to leave the site. What to Bring: All tools and materials that are needed for construction are available on site. We always have plenty of hard hats, safety glasses, and any other safety equipment you might need. We are also set up at the sites with plenty of water. We encourage you to bring a water bottle to refill in order to cut down on the need for cups and trips back and forth to the water cooler. We do recommend keeping sunscreen and bug spray on hand as well! Type of Work: Volunteers work on nearly all phases of homebuilding including framing, roofing, siding, painting, flooring, and landscaping. Arriving on Site: When you first arrive at the site, there will be a sign-in book and name tags. All volunteers should sign-in and turn in their completed waiver forms. If you have not brought a signed copy of our waiver of liability with you, there will be extra copies available. Before starting construction, the site supervisor will go over safety procedures and the plan for the day.

7 Project Assignments Framing/Exterior Work Day Date Assigned: Volunteers needed, must be at least 16 yrs old (Record names below) 1-2 Crew Leaders Needed (Record names below) These are people in your group that will serve as team leaders on the site. They are often the ones receiving the instructions from our construction staff and then are in charge of making sure everyone on their crew gets the assignment finished. They do not have to have extensive construction experience, just be able to take instructions well and lead a team!

9 Fundraising Ideas *Make a model house Build a model in which to collect donations. Place the house in high traffic areas. *Distribute Habitat house banks and fund-raising calendars Children learn to count their blessings and join in the giving as they collect money based on the conveniences in their homes. *Buy a brick Create a grid on a poster containing a drawing of a house. Sell sections of the grid and write donors names in the spaces. *Sell square feet Create a stylized foot on a certificate and have fun selling square feet for a house *Pound it home with a nail sale Paint the tips of nails and sell them-- $1 for bronze, $3 for silver, $5 for gold, etc. *Collect a mile of pennies or nickels or dimes Have your resident genius figure out how much that would net and then get to work! *Host an out of town volunteer group If you can provide a room to sleep in, and kitchen and bathroom facilities for out of town groups, start taking reservations! Groups are often willing to pay $10-15 per person per night. *Collect aluminum cans Partner with the Aluminum Association for great proceeds. *Plan a special offering or offerings Designate a specific Sunday or several Sundays as times for special Habitat offerings. *Serve up your congregation s favorite dinner, desserts or ice cream Plan a social and spice it up with a speaker or a dance or performers *Crank up a concert Invite members or local artists to give a benefit concert *Get creative with a craft show Solicit crafters from the community to donate items or a portion of sales *Try the tried and true Bake sales, auctions, babysitting, garage sales, and clean up days for donations are often still great fundraisers.

10 Partnership Levels Levels of Partnership Please check the partnership opportunities below that your organization is able to commit to. All participating organizations will be recognized in HFHMC s E-Newsletter and on the website. BUILDER Partner Provide $5,000 or more 25 volunteers for 1 framing/exterior day 5-10 volunteers for 1 finishing day *Recognition on signage at the Interfaith Build work site CARPENTER Partner Provide $3, volunteers for 1 framing/exterior day 5-10 volunteers for 1 finishing day *Recognition on signage at the Interfaith Build work site APPRENTICE Partner Provide $1, volunteers for 1 framing/exterior day 5-8 volunteers for 1 finishing day *Recognition on signage at the Interfaith Build work site FOUNDATION Partner Provide a one time financial contribution from a special offering or fundraiser of any amount and provide willing volunteers (if available) for 1 build day (no amount is too small!) We are interested in providing lunch for up to 35 people during one of the framing/exterior work days (September and October) of the Interfaith Build. We are interested in providing lunch for up to 15 people during one of the finishing work days (October, November or December) of the Interfaith Build.

11 Letter of Intent This agreement is established between Habitat for Humanity in Mobile County (HFHMC) and, which will serve as an Interfaith Partner. Organization Name In signing this letter, the parties agree to the following: 1. HFHMC will select the partner family, provide staff to supervise construction, order materials, handle inspections, hire sub-contractors, and provide required tools on site. 2., will pray for the ministry of Organization Name Habitat and will exert its best effort to provide the labor, financial contribution, and/or meals as indicated on the attached Partnership Levels form to construct the house. 3. HFHMC agrees to sell the house to the partner family and will use the zero-interest house payments to enable other people in need to get decent housing.
