4 Workshops and Seminars W S CO Workshop (Workshops are more participative) Seminar Cruse delegates only This is an overview of the workshops and seminars. For further details go to: Addressing client anger Alan Donaghey A succinct review of client anger from a bereavement practitioner s perspective, and a reminder of basic skills already learnt. We will look at what anger is, and link basic theory and practice to working with angry clients. Will include opportunities to share good practice. Bereavement behind bars Sue Pritchett and Marion Wilson An overview of the differences between being bereaved behind bars and on the out, with an opportunity to look at an innovative new model used by Cruse incorporating both 1:1 and groupwork. Bereavement following drug or alcohol related deaths Tony Walter This workshop invites those with personal experience of drug and alcohol-related loss, and those who have worked with such clients, to share their experiences. It will also report on the early stages of a research project. Commissioning working in partnership with your local Clinical Commissioning Group Terry Silvers Explore the new emerging clinical commissioning landscape, what it means for local Cruse Areas and learn how to engage with and influence CCGs. Effective reporting after securing funding will also be covered. Developing bereavement services for children and young people in Wales Alison Thomas and Veronica Snow An informative and interactive workshop designed to promote discussion and give participants an understanding of the strategic and operational steps required to build a National Children and Young People s Bereavement Service in Wales. This session will be useful to all looking at strategic development of services and partnership working. Disenfranchised grief The contexts, causes of and complications arising from disenfranchised grief (grief that is not openly acknowledged, socially sanctioned, or publicly mourned) will be explored, together with interventive strategies that can enfranchise grief. Doing therapy briefly Professor Robert Bor An overview of the theory and practice of time-limited therapy, with an emphasis on starting it in a consultative format. By using your main or preferred therapy approach in a brief and focused way, collaboration, clarity of focus and an optimism that helps the client to feel that
5 Workshops and Seminars solutions are possible, without denying their difficulties or emotional pain, much can be achieved in a shorter period of time. Early intervention in bereavement Sarah Cheape There is increasing evidence that the experience of bereaved people around the time of death and soon afterwards influences the grieving process and the longer term health of bereaved people. Cruse s Early Intervention Project Manager Sarah Cheape outlines learning from this project and invites participants to discuss the challenge that early intervention may pose for current service delivery. Encouraging community engagement Lesley Lopez Who are the local partners, stakeholders and community leaders that will work with us in a joined up approach to providing bereavement support? Working collaboratively with these partners we will be able to support and engage with hard to reach communities, providing and developing services that are accessible, appropriate and inclusive to all. Groupwork for those bereaved by suicide Margaret Ginger This will explore the particular issues raised for people bereaved by suicide and the benefits of group support, drawing on the example of an open support group for those bereaved in this way which has run for 17 years in Cambridge. There will be opportunity to learn from each other. Handling concerns raised by or with volunteers Mike Pearson and Annika Taal As Areas grow and volunteer numbers increase, it is natural that more issues will be raised by or with volunteers. Cruse has developed a procedure to handle such issues as fairly as possible. This practical session will provide guidance to Areas. Making the most of supervision Robin Shohet A demonstration of group supervision, showing how a few simple techniques can be very effective, followed by a theoretical exposition of the seven eyed model described in Supervision in the Helping Professions, which places the demonstration in a theoretical context. Making sense of it all: using therapeutic songwriting with the bereaved Bob Heath Music therapy can help clients move through memories and begin to attach meaning to their experiences. Using real case studies this session will trace the journeys of clients who have used therapeutic song writing to express what at times felt inexpressible. It will include opportunities to engage with the process itself and explore your own use of creativity in bereavement care.
6 Workshops and Seminars Metaphors in the therapeutic encounter as a lever in grief therapy James Turner This workshop will enable the participant to work with and recognise metaphors in their therapeutic encounters. Working with metaphors and the imaginative imagery of metaphors has been found to be effective in grief therapy as well as in wider therapeutic encounters. Social media for Cruse Areas Clair Pike and Amber Dowell A workshop focusing on how Cruse Areas can utilise Social Media with a basic overview of Facebook, Twitter and Mailchimp. Successful partnership working Jim Glennon and Cecil Sinclair This practical session introduces participants to the key elements that need to be in place for successful partnership working, using real examples drawn from recent Cruse work with Samaritans at a local and national level. The challenge of technology Jim Glennon and Sarah Cheape With new technologies come new challenges for providing bereavement support. This highly interactive session evidences the power of both telephone and support and showcases new online training programmes in both Helpline and support now available throughout the Cruse network. When talking is not enough structured therapeutic writing following bereavement Trish Staples Writing is a useful medium through which to convey grief responses bereaved people find difficult to talk about. A brief explanation of the aims and benefits of structured therapeutic writing will be followed by a number of different writing structures. Attendees will be expected to participate in the writing. When two worlds unite: accompanying young children through grief Ruth Graham and Ruth Wilson This workshop will look at how bereavement might impact on a very young child, and how we can actively listen to their stories and their grief through activities and by using media. Working systematically with bereavement and loss: working with couples and families Barbara McKay An introduction to systemic and narrative ideas about bereavement and loss, exploring ways in which practitioners can use systemic interventions to incorporate the lost person. Bring your own case material for application of the ideas. Working creatively with bereaved people Suzanne Quinn Explore a hands-on approach to working with clients, including using memory boxes, stones and other props to help them make sense of their world. Participants will create memory boxes during the session.
