2 Seventh Annual New Savoy Conference Psychological Therapies in the NHS Welcome this year to the Mermaid Theatre and the 7th annual Psychological Therapies in the NHS conference. Psychological therapies in the NHS 2013 marks the halfway point for the Coalition Government s Mental Health Strategy and its 4-Year Talking Therapies Plan. Is it working? The new Mandate includes new and further expectations and requirements on NHS England and its partners to expand and transform the quality of NHS psychological therapy services. But will the problems with implementing IAPT be addressed at this point, or will we reach 2015 having learned and changed fundamentally little in the way we work in target-driven silos? How can we do the business of talking therapies as a less fragmented, less marginalised discipline with more in the way of inter-professional dialogue? This year s theme is about how we re-think our approach to improving quality and how to navigate a way forward with new clinically led commissioning frameworks. Some of the answers to these questions can be addressed by looking at the real world evidence. Professor Michael Barkham is internationally respected as an expert in practice-based evidence and real world outcomes alongside evidence-based practice. He will be presenting the results of the 2nd National Audit with Professor Mike Crawford and the NAPT team in our opening keynote. Has the unprecedented investment yielded significant dividends and if so for whom? If this event has gained a reputation for anything it is for giving delegates the opportunity to challenge and engage with Ministers, policy makers and decision-makers so they know directly from the people on the front line what doesn t work! This year will be no exception and given the reforms and general acceptance that centralised, top-down programmes are not effective at improving outcomes we are delighted that the new National Clinical Director for Mental Health at NHS England will be joining the Health Minister on day one, and the new Directors for Mental Health and Wellbeing and Long-term conditions at Public Health England and NHS England will join us with the Minister for Welfare Reform for day two. If the previous top-down approach wasn t working, what should it be replaced with? At last year s event the clear message from delegates was that work and capability assessments and the failure to join up the work programme with talking therapy services the original promise of IAPT was damaging to mental health. Since then both Ministers have been meeting and work was commissioned to review how we can integrate and implement our approach more effectively. The results of this major review will be announced at this year s conference. Finally, do take a look at the programme outline and book your place early for what promises to be another exciting and stimulating event with the best speakers addressing the most relevant subjects for critical thinking and debate. Let me conclude this invitation to you by highlighting our other keynote on day one given by two of the most highly respected researchers into stepped care in psychological therapies in the UK, Professor Pete Bower and Professor Simon Gilbody. The central story of recent years has been the drive to scale up access to stepped care services. Who better then to ask whether and how these service models work, and what the evidence points to as factors that make low-intensity interventions effective? Their findings, I guarantee, will make you think again.
