2 This two-day conference, offered in both Sydney and Melbourne in October 2011, offers a unique opportunity to hear and meet distinguished international leaders and teachers in the fields of palliative care, death education and grief and bereavement support. Being conducted prior to the 25th meeting of the International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement (IWG) in Melbourne, all conference speakers are members of the IWG. The IWG promotes the search for and sharing of reliable knowledge in the field of death, dying, and bereavement. The IWG meets approximately every 18 months for the purpose of facilitating informal interaction among its members, and to allow members to convene into work groups, and to develop standards of practice. Membership currently comprises 150 members from various countries around the world. This conference will be of interest to bereavement counsellors, nurses, pastoral care workers, physicians, psychologists, school counsellors, social workers, teachers, and all who have an interest in care of the dying, the bereaved, and in death education. CAROL WOGRIN Reflection in Action: The Use of Self as a Clinical Tool in End of Life and Bereavement Care. CECI CHAN Inspiring Hope and Transforming Grief: Working with Victims of Disaster and Traumatic Events in China Presenters Dr Colin Murray Parkes is a psychiatrist, researcher and author. He has contributed to, and edited, numerous books and articles on the nature of human attachments and loss. Recent work has focused on traumatic bereavements (with special reference to violent deaths, the cycle of violence, terrorism and other armed conflict). He has been a member of the International Work Group on Death, Dying and Bereavement since its foundation in the 1960s, and was awarded an OBE by Her Majesty The Queen for his services to bereaved people in June Dr Carl Becker has a PhD in Comparative (East-West) Philosophy and has taught Asian Philosophy at Southern Illinois University, Asian Studies at the University of Houston Department of Education, and Comparative Thought at Japan s National Osaka, Tsukuba, and Kyoto Universities. 3 He became the first American to be fully tenured and promoted as a civil servant within the Japanese national university system. He has participated in projects of Japan s Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Education, and is consulted frequently by the news media on medical ethics in Japan. In 1986 he received the SIETAR Award for Contributing to Cross-Cultural Understanding, and in 1992 he received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Bombay University for his work in comparative studies of death and dying. Dr Carol Wogrin is a clinical psychologist and registered nurse with a background in acute care, home care, and hospice. An author and educator, she is the Director of the National Center for Death Education, Mount Ida College; serves on the Board of Directors of the International Work Group on Death, Dying and Bereavement; and is Associate Editor of the Handbook of Thanatology. She has a private psychotherapy practice in Newton, MA. Dr Ceci Chan is the Si Yuan Professor in Health and Social Work in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration at The University of Hong Kong. She is also the Director of Centre on Behavioral Health, and Associate Director, HKJC Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention. Her focus is on growth and transformation through pain. Her Eastern Body-Mind-Spirit Approach has been widely adopted, locally and globally. Her research areas include empowerment, health and mental health, suicide prevention, Eastern Body-Mind-Spirit Intervention, women, family and marriage, practice innovations and research. Presenters Dr Simon Shimshon Rubin is a Professor of clinical psychology and director of the International Center for the Study of Loss, Bereavement and Human Resilience at the University of Haifa in Israel.
4 Dr Rubin is active as a clinician, researcher and teacher, and has focused on the life-long implications of loss and bereavement, the significance of the relationship to the deceased, and the impact of child loss upon parents and families. His Two-Track Model of Bereavement (1981, 1999) has served as the basis for ongoing research and intervention strategies across a range of bereaved persons. Dr Ruth Malkinson is Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the Bob Shapell School of Social Work, and the School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University. She is the founder and director of the Israeli Center of REBT (Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy). She is internationally recognised for her expertise and research in the fields of grief and bereavement and cognitive grief therapy. She teaches and practices individual and family therapy along the life cycle. Dr Kenneth J. Doka is a Professor of Gerontology at the Graduate School of The College of New Rochelle and Senior Consultant to the Hospice Foundation of America. Dr Doka was elected President of the Association for Death Education and Counseling in In 1995, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the International Work Group on Dying, Death and Bereavement and served as chair from The Association for Death Education and Counseling presented him with an Award for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Death Education in In 2000 Scott and White presented him an award for Outstanding Contributions to Thanatology and Hospice. Dr Doka is an ordained Lutheran minister. Dr Therese Rando is a clinical psychologist in Warwick, Rhode Island. She is the Clinical Director of The Institute for the Study and Treatment of Loss, which provides mental health services through psychotherapy, training, supervision, and consultation. Since 1970, she has consulted, conducted research, provided therapy, written, and lectured internationally in areas related to loss, grief, illness, dying, and trauma. Current professional and research foci include treatment of complicated mourning; loss of a child; the interface between posttraumatic stress and grief; anticipatory mourning; specialised intervention techniques for traumatic bereavement, and the integration of EMDR into intervention with grief and mourning. * Programs subject to final confirmation
