3 Biographies Dr. Katherine Shear Marion E. Kenworthy Professor of Psychiatry Director of the Center for Complicated Grief at Columbia School of Social Work. Complicated grief is a serious, worryingly common, and poorly treated condition. Diagnostic criteria are still under development, but surveys suggest nearly 4% of the general adult population is likely to be suffering from current complicated grief (Kersting, 2011). Amongst people who are already seeking psychological help from mental health professionals, Complicated grief prevalence is likely to be over 20% (Pini, 2012). Complicated grief is typically comorbid with other disorders, is persistent over many years, and involves loss of parents, grandparents and friends as well as partners. Despite the availability of simple screening questions, complicated grief diagnosis is routinely missed with serious consequences for prolonged psychological distress, increased physical illness, and raised death rates (Stroebe, 2007). Dr. Shear has spent decades conducting clinical research in anxiety, depression and related disorders. She developed complicated grief treatment and confirmed its efficacy in three large NIMH-funded studies. This treatment is strength-based and incorporates methods from other proven efficacious psychotherapies to provide a short-term, focused approach to fostering adaptation to loss. She is widely recognized for her work in bereavement, including both research and clinical awards from the Association for Death Education and Counseling and invited authorship of articles for Uptodate and the New England Journal of Medicine.
4 Biographies Dr. Colin Murray Parkes OBE, MD, FRCPsych, LLD Author, researcher and Emeritus Consultant Psychiatrist to St Christoper s Hospice President for Life of Cruse Bereavement Care Colin Murray Parkes is an emminent psychiatrist and author of numerous books on grief and bereavement. Colin has worked with John Bowlby at the Tavistock Institute on problems of attachments and losses in adult life, with Dame Cicely Saunders on the inception of palliative care and bereavement services at St Christopher Hospice, Sydenham and with Margaret Torrie and Derek Nuttall to develop a nation-wide bereavement service Cruse Bereavement Care using carefully selected, trained and supervised volunteers. Recent work has focused on prolonged grief disorder, traumatic bereavements (with special reference to violent deaths, armed conflict, and the cycle of violence) and on the roots in the attachments of childhood of the psychiatric problems that can follow the loss of loved persons in adult life.
5 Biographies David Trickey Consultant Clinical Psychologist The Anna Freud Centre David Trickey is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist specialising in traumatised and bereaved children and young people. He works at the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families in London and at Cambridge Clinical Psychology Services. He has worked as a clinical psychologist with children and young people since 1994, and has specialised in trauma and bereavement since David is a member of the committee that is currently updating the NICE Guidelines for PTSD.
