I know some of you are active participants in your community walks. For those who are not, this is a great opportunity to get your group together and support the Ohio Valley Chapter. Your support doesn t only consist of walking, you can volunteer to help in any of the following areas: registration (seated) advocacy, food server, event set-up or clean-up, finish line cheering or a greeter. 2 Items of Interest MS Trial Alert: Investigators in Ohio Recruiting 24 People for Study of Autologous Mesenchymal Stem Cell Transplantation Investigators in Ohio are recruiting 24 people with relapsing forms of MS for a study of the safety and tolerability of transplanting one s own mesenchymal stem cells (derived from bone marrow). The study is being conducted at Cleveland Clinic Mellen MS Center, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, and the National Center for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, all in Cleveland. This study is supported by the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs, a program funded through the Defense Department, thanks in large part to the tireless work of MS activists across the country who helped to secure funding. Please note: This study involves numerous visits to study site. To learn more about the enrollment criteria for this study, and to find out if you are eligible to participate, please contact: Sarah Planchon Pope, PhD, Program Manager, planchs@ccf.org, or Cynthia Schwanger, RN, MSCN, CCRP, Research Nurse, schwanc@cccf.org, Female MS Volunteers Needed for Research Study Ohio State University is looking for women with relapsingremitting MS for a 24 month study to see if there are less relapses with the treatment of Copaxone injections plus oral estriol as compared to treatment of Copaxone injections plus oral placebo. They are looking for: women years old, diagnosed with definite RRMS, able to walk without any aids such as can or walker, and had at least one relapse within the last 2 years. You are not eligible for the study if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, smoke, or have other serious medical conditions. Those treated in the past with Copaxone, Avonex, Rebif or Betaseron will NOT BE EXCLUDED. This study is being conducted by Michael Racke, MD, Professor Ohio State University, Department of Neurology. 3 Healthy Tips for Mind and Body The Yoga of Falling, Part III In our last two articles, we reviewed ways to prevent falling, but many people living with MS will acknowledge that regardless of how dutifully and mindfully one seeks to prevent it, falling happens. Facing that truth, one can take to heart the key principle about falling: GO WITH IT. The GO WITH IT principle means that without having to think much about it (as if there were time to think while falling), one allows the fall to happen as if it were supposed to. One softens the body. One releases the knee and elbow joints and in certain instances, allows the back to gently round as one goes down. When one hits the ground, one encourages the body to continue the momentum of movement. All of this will enable one to lessen the power of the fall s impact. Remember the axiom you learned in grade school if you should accidentally be on fire? Stop, drop, and roll! Perhaps remembering that old axiom will help trigger an understanding of how a GO WITH IT response feels like when falling. Our typical reaction in falling is to stiffen the body and reach out, increasing the chance of injury. Because this is our typical reaction, it is highly beneficial to PRACTICE the GO WITH IT principle. That is what those who fall on purpose do, so why not people living with MS? Have a conversation with people who fall on purpose the athlete, the skater, the dancer, the clown about how they protect themselves in a fall. They have many tricks up their sleeves regarding falling and this writer is sure that they uphold the GO WITH IT principle and practice implementing it regularly. Our next article will feature a yoga practice that gently incorporates the GO WITH IT principle of falling. We hope it is of benefit to you! Until then, Brenda C. Kayne Page 3
