Mission: to advance high impact collaboration, service excellence and organizational development among community assistance ministries Δ Δ Δ Vision: ACAM envisions a community that is supported by a network of faith based collaborative ministries that provide opportunities for families and individuals to meet and rise above their basic needs. We do this through: Collaboration Training Networking Setting the Standard High Impact Programs Advocacy Brand Promotion 1

What is ACAM? Established in 2004, ACAM is a 501(c)(3) public charity and management support organization (MSO) that facilitates a dynamic, high-performing network of member ministries, funders and community partners to increase the network s collective impact and its ability to effectively respond to community needs. What is ACAM s purpose? Pursue shared goals and contribute to each others success Help members develop collaborations and service models to strengthen their communities Create awareness of the ministries & their clients Fosters a focus on organizational development 2

What is ACAM s Value? ACAM funder or investor" partners may choose to directly and personally engage with the network beyond providing financial support. ACAM s programs produce measurable improvements in its members capacity through a combination of training, networking, collaborative projects, and targeted grants to build infrastructure. ACAM s model offers standardized reporting, a common evaluation procedure, and facilitation of multiyear outcomes measurement, which save time and money for both funders and ministries. ACAM created and is trademarking an objective tool for evaluating organizational capacity for faith-based human service entities. The relationship between ACAM and its members fosters a safe and collaborative environment. 3

Key Terms Management Support Organization (MSO) A nonprofit that exists to provide capacity building, project assistance and supportive services to other nonprofits Organizational Development/ Capacity Building Any activity that increases nonprofit effectiveness or enhances its impact on people s lives and their communities Collaboration A mutually beneficial and well-defined relationship entered into by organizations to achieve common goals *Nonprofit Resource Network *adapted from National Council of Nonprofits *Building Successful Collaborations, Carolyn Parkinson,

What is a Community Assistance Ministry (CAM)? Traditionally, a CAM is an organization supported in part by a collaboration of congregations (ecumenical, intra-denominational or interfaith) in order to provide basic needs assistance services to members of their community. ACAM s member ministries serve as the social service safety net, preventing homelessness, meeting basic needs and helping people become self-sufficient. ACAM s focus is on ministries that provide homeless prevention/basic needs services without charge to a broad base of community residents living at or below the poverty level without requiring a particular expression of faith as a basis for services. Members must provide 2 or more of the following : 1. food 5. rent assistance 2. case management 6. utility assistance 3. clothing 7. school supplies/uniforms 4. employment services 8. transportation 5

ACAM s Core Programs Capacity Building Training and Networking Collaborative Initiatives Advocacy and Outreach 7

Capacity Building Core Programs ACAM promotes sound practices in nonprofit operations and programming. Organizational assessments inform members of their strengths, weaknesses, challenges and opportunities and are incorporated into their organizational development plans. ACAM supports member plan implementation through training and consulting stipends and direct grants to implement organizational or programmatic enhancements. 8

Training and Networking ACAM promotes best practice knowledge, peer learning, collaboration and information exchange. We offer training in five areas that are most critical to community assistance ministries. ACAM regularly convenes 5 groups: Executive Directors Volunteer Management Program Development Resource Development Thrift Store Institute Thrift Store Institute meeting 9

10

Collaborative Initiatives The ministries are uniquely positioned to work together. Through this program, ACAM garners resources to leverage the collective strength of the collaborative in emergency situations. Some examples of collaborative initiatives include: 1. Homeless Prevention Program (HPRP) was a response to the economic downturn 2. The Basic Needs Assistance Project (B-NAP) supported members during a city-wide food shortage 3. Disaster Recovery 4. Boosted Back-to-school drives 5. Collaborative for Counseling (CFC) provided free counseling at 4 member ministries 6. Infrastructure Development Grant Program (IDGP) to support capacity building and client services 7. Emergency Solutions Grant Program (ESG) to support the work of members in homeless street outreach, homeless prevention and raid re-housing 11

12

Advocacy and Outreach ACAM advocates for its members by: Providing a platform for unified communication Interfacing directly with local and state-level policy-making groups Coordinating with philanthropic and government offices for resources Highlighting the role of ministries as service hubs in their communities to raise awareness of the issues affecting people served by the ministries ACAM is a member of: Alliance for Nonprofit Management Coalition for the Homeless Coalition of Behavioral Health Services One Voice Texas Association of Nonprofit Organizations (TANO) 13
