1 Making more of life Headline Notes New from Age UK - Hearing Aids Trading Services Age UK has teamed up with leading hearing specialists UK Hearing Care to offer a complete hearing aid service. It is run by a team of highly-trained audiologists who will guide customers through the process from start to finish whether that s in the comfort of their own home, or at their nearest Age UK office. The service is totally independent with a full range of manufacturers so customers will be offered a clear, unbiased choice whether that's getting a free hearing aid from the NHS or a bespoke option tailored to their personal needs supplied by Age UK Hearing Aids. And it s all backed by a price match promise, so they can rest assured you won t pay a penny more than you need to. There are currently TV ad running for the Hearing Aids which you can see here - Some of the team from UK Hearing Care are coming out to talk to staff and volunteers about the new service in the coming months so if you would like to attend please let Martin Dixon at the Bradbury Centre know. 2 Transgender Group The Age UK Transgender Group that meet in Whitley Bay would like to say a big thank you to Angie McDine, Kerry Parker, Angie Dawson and Mary Forster for coming along to see them this week. The four Age UK staff volunteered their time to do nails and demonstrate and model various hair styles and gave general tips and hints about styling techniques. The group thoroughly enjoyed the night and hope to be able to do it again in the future. 3 Dementia Friends To have your name added to our waiting list By now most of you will have seen the current National campaign on television promoting Dementia Friends Oh I get by with a little help from my friends, Mm I get high with a little help from my friends Oh I'm going to try with a little help from my friends Age UK North Tyneside would like all of our volunteers and staff to sign up to become a Dementia Friend, to find out more simply follow the link at the bottom of this article, watch the short video s and please sign up Congratulations Best Practice in Dementia Care Devised by the University of Sterling, accredited by City & Guilds and Royal College of Nursing, delivered through the Care Academy in Whitley Bay, saw local learners celebrate their success. The training was completed over a period of 6 months, Patrick Hughes, Senior Trainer at the Care Academy said To ensure we maintained a quality service in Dementia Care, we arranged for the training to be delivered from 4pm to 6pm., all the staff involved attended during their own time on a Thursday evening. Each committed additional time to complete set assignments, which were then sent off to Stirling University for verification. Customers were keen to get involved in the presentation ceremony which took place at Age UK

It is a two-way process, as a volunteer you bring your knowledge, skills and experiences and in return you are offered a wide range of interesting and diverse opportunities to support individuals in your community. Being a volunteer at Age UK North Tyneside hopefully will give you a sense of pride and satisfaction knowing that you are making more of life for older people. Our volunteers act as the face of the organisation and provide the opportunity for our demographic to get to know us better through information sharing, participation and ultimately enjoyment.

5 It s not all about giving either, last year staff and customers nominated volunteers for the annual David Luke Staff and Volunteer Thank You and Long Service Awards; and for the Chairman of North Tyneside Council Awards. Indeed one of our greatest accolades last year was the winner of both the above awards ceremonies was then nominated as a National Age UK Volunteer Champion. An invite was exended to Gillian Kerr to attend the Vitality Ball 2013, a star studded evening filled with fabulous food, wine and entertainment in the unique surrounding of one of London s most iconic landmarks, Battersea Power Station, including all travel & accommodation expenses. We want to attract new volunteers from a wide mix of ages and backgrounds to support older people and share their skills through activities across our projects and services. This has the added benefit of promoting respect and value for all individuals regardless of age, race, gender, sexuality, disability, religion. In case your still wondering what you will get out of volunteering, here are a few comments for you to consider. I love being able to put a smile back on Florence s face, and see her confidence build again, by helping her get out and about again I now have a purpose in life again, volunteering allows me this It makes it worth getting out of bed in the morning there s always something new to do, it give me a sense of belonging I am able to put something back into the community, I know I can still contribute to society, it is a great way of meeting new people I really enjoy knowing that Harry is getting
