2 September is Prostte Cncer Awreness Month Regulr physicin check-ups re importnt. The Centers for Disese Control (CDC) nd other federl gencies follow the prostte cncer screening recommendtions set forth by the U.S. Preventive Services Tsk Force which recommends ginst PSA-bsed screening for men who do not hve symptoms. (The min gol of cncer screening test is to reduce the number of deths from the disese. The Tsk Force found tht becuse prostte cncer grows t such slow rte tht in the mjority of dult men it isn t likely to cuse helth problems during lifetime. Therefore, only very smll number, if ny, benefit from PSA screening.) Informed Decision Mking With the understnding tht men nd their doctors my continue to screen for prostte cncer, the CDC continues to support informed decision-mking. Men nd their fmilies will turn to trusted helthcre professionls to help them mke informed decisions. CDC encourges doctors to hve open converstions with their ptients who hve questions bout prostte cncer nd PSA screening. Informed decision-mking occurs when mn: Understnds the nture nd risk of prostte cncer. Understnds the risks of, benefits of nd lterntives to screening.
