Hippocrates Upcoming Event 11th Annual Share the Love Luncheon Wed, Feb 27; 12 pm Center for Visual and Performing Arts This annual luncheon is hosted by the Friends of the Cancer Resource Centre and the auxiliaries of the hospitals of Community Healthcare System. Tickets for the event are $50. Proceeds benefit the Cancer Resource Centre. For more information, contact Sherri Holt at Greetings from the Administrator I wish you all much joy as we bring in the New Year. In December we celebrated our 18th annual tree lighting event, honoring more than 1,000 individuals who light up the life of their loved ones. We are thankful for all who supported this event. Also in December was the Cancer Resource Centre holiday celebration featuring the Munster High School Chorale. This event is a great way to celebrate with those who have used the services of the Centre. This year more than ever I am reminded of the successes that have occurred over the years and how many lives have been touched by our organization. I have had the pleasure and privilege of serving as the Administrator of the Community Cancer Research Foundation since its beginning in 2001 and am grateful to have been able to bring the Cancer Resource Centre to its fruition in 2003 with the help of so many individuals. It is with gratitude and satisfaction that I am ending my career with Community Hospital, having been involved in many aspects of cancer care. It has been because of the support of our organization, our leaders, our community and those we serve that we have been able to fulfill our mission year after year. I am confident that the strong caring individuals remaining in this organization will continue to make strides in finding the best treatments for cancer and providing support and encouragement to those diagnosed with this disease throughout their journey. 2 Cancer Awareness Spotlight on Susie Marcus, MSW, LCSW Susie Marcus is a clinical social worker who facilitates the Caregivers and Support Group at the Cancer Resource Centre and the Hope Network Support Group at St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. She has learned personally from the support groups how beneficial it can be for cancer patients, survivors and caretakers to be connected with others who are going through or have gone through similar experiences. There is a deep level of understanding, compassion and encouragement when facing a cancer diagnosis. Susie is also a cancer survivor. She said, I know very well the fears, anxieties, challenges and hopes that accompany cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. My approach therefore is both personal and professional. World cancer day is celebrated February 4 to raise awareness of all type of cancer and to motivate cancer patients. It is celebrated to encourage the prevention and treatment of cancer. A normal and very common reaction when finishing treatment. Tue, Feb 19; 12 pm Scanxiety: anxiety about having a medical follow up/ checkup? Tips to help manage these feelings. Tue, Feb 26; 12 pm Techniques in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. Breathing exercises to help lower stress and bring a sense of peace to your mind-body connection.

3 Spotlight on Sylvia Strick In 2008, Sylvia Strick was diagnosed with Stage IV Thyroid Cancer and was looking at resources in the community that could assist her needs. Sylvia came across the Cancer Resource Centre where she started her journey of healing. She reflected on a boxer named Rocky Marciano who wrote a book called, Somebody Up there Likes Me. I feel that way - that somebody likes me and did not want me up there yet, she said. Sylvia started to attend Mind Body Spirit programs upon her niece s suggestion. Sylvia started to attend support groups and Chair Yoga and Tai Chi. Sylvia found herself meeting other survivors and learning strategies to deal with her anxiety. The staff at the Centre made her feel comfortable. It s a safe haven with love and hugs. They care for all of us. she said. During her cancer journey, she found the Centre, the volunteers and staff to be extremely kind, helpful and supportive. Sylvia is extremely appreciative for the programs and services offered by the Cancer Resource Centre. Sylvia in her free time enjoys going to plays, day trips, making friends and eating at Manny s. If I can do anything I want to inspire other cancer patients to live their life to the fullest, she said. The Cancer Resource Centre is fulfilling their mission by offering support, education and encouragement. Upcoming Events Hoop Dreams for a Cure: Fri, Apr 5; 6 pm Munster High School Gym, Entrance J&K Community Healthcare System professionals take to the basketball court for a good cause. Basketball teams comprised of medical staff, administration and staff. Halftime entertainment included. Please call Centre for further details. Brick Dedication Ceremony: Sat, May 18; 10 am 12 pm Bricks are placed in the healing garden twice a year. For spring placement in the garden by mid-may, you must have your order in by February 1. For fall placement in the garden by mid- October, you must have your order in by July 1. An invitation will be sent in the mail regarding Brick Ceremony date. Greetings... During the holiday season, the colorful lights shine outside Community Hospital in Munster with the hope that a cure will be found for cancer. For the past 18 years, holiday lights on the Lights of Life trees outside Community Hospital in Munster have been illuminated and serve as a reminder of the journey of hope that goes along with a cancer diagnosis. Each brilliant pink and lavender light on the Lights of Life trees represents a donation made to the Community Cancer Research Foundation, Inc. This year, more than $15,000 was raised for cancer research.

All proceeds from the weekend went to the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster. They asked their riders to show support and wear pink. The studio was filled with riders excited to be there cycling for a cause. The pedaling event raised $355. Thank you to all who made this event successful. ORIENTATION SESSIONS An orientation introduces the philosophy of the Cancer Resource Centre and is required prior to joining support groups. Orientation is NOT required prior to attending any educational seminar or workshop, mind/body/spirit program or networking group. Call for dates and times. REGISTRATION It is important that you register for all events as soon as possible. In the event of poor weather conditions, call the Cancer Resource Centre regarding possible program cancellations.
