1 S O C I A L A C T I V I T Y P R O G R A M M E S R U N N I N G I N Armagh Craigavon Dungannon Newry South Down Coastal Tour: Newsletter S E P T E M B E R On Sunday 19th August we held our first ever road cycling event. We were delighted to welcome over 70 cyclists on the tour. We were thrilled with the very positive feedback that we have received about the event in person, via and Facebook. We have raised over 1,400 from the event and this will allow us to continue to provide vital services to adults with a head injury within the southern trust area. Thanks to the generosity of Re-Gen our main sponsor of the event and to Rocwell Pomeroy who supplied all of the water for the event for free, we really appreciate this support. Thanks also to Newry Leisure Centre for allowing us to use their facilities and also Café Core at the Leisure Centre and The Harbour House Inn in Newcastle for providing the refreshments on route and food at the end - charging us reduced rates to support us. A huge thanks to all of our marshals and volunteers, we couldn t have made this event so successful without you. Lastly to Slieve Gullion Wheelers, especially to Kevin Kenny for making it happen, so successfully. A big thank you is also due to First Derivatives in Newry who recently held a Dress Down Day in aid of ourselves and raised a fantastic 600! We were blown away by the generosity of the staff. Thanks to Super Valu Hill Street Newry who continue to hold our collection pots in their store over a number of months and collected and Many thanks to their customers for their ongoing support.

2 P A G E 2 S E P T E M B E R What we have been up to at our Outreach Groups: In August at our outreach groups we have enjoyed the usual mix of activities and games. We started the month by working on grass heads, this was a lot of fun and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone! We also worked on some creative decorative stone displays. Towards the end of the month we started working on some air drying clay projects. This was new to a lot of our members and was great to try out something very different. We made hanging fish decorations, decorated with sequins and beads for displaying in bathrooms or elsewhere and we tried out clay candle holders. Well done to you all for getting engaged with the activity and trying something new. After our craft activity we like to relax with a cup of tea and a biscuit and try our hand at some group games that help with memory, concentration and focus but are fun as well! We had great craic with Monopoly, jenga, dominoes, bird matching games, memory games and activities with usual craic, laughter and banter. We are delighted to have a record number of our outreach members coming along on our annual holiday. It will be great to see all of our outreach groups and the Newry group mixing together and getting to know even more of the Head Injury Support Family!! Our Armagh group even managed to get involved in the recent We Deserve Better movement which is sweeping across Northern Ireland at the moment in response to our lack of government. Septembers crafts will include artistic acrylic painting, jewellery making and creating floral decorations with pipe cleaners!!

We will be returning to Castlewellan Forest Park for some outdoor activities, we have a PIPS 5 Steps to Wellbeing course happening as well as our usual arts, crafts, upcycling and activities. We also hope to have more trips out and about if the weather is good and we are hoping to start a monthly Ladies Day Session to allow female survivors to meet up at the same time in the centre and do some activities that they would like to take part in. 5 S E P T E M B E R Head Injury Support in Newry Weekday support: We had a fun filled August in our Newry Centre this summer. We enjoyed creating candle and wax melts with Anne Marie which was so interesting that the new skills we learnt from Anne Marie s workshops will allow us to start production of these for our Creative minds shop. We have been very busy with our pebble art creations, these have been flying out the door (we can hardly keep up with orders) for birthdays, new babies, weddings and graduations. One of our survivors is making beautiful wooden planters in the shapes of lorries and buses which are sure to be a hit in our shop! We were also busy working on our outdoor mural which is nearing completion and has really brightened up our outdoor space. Preparations were also underway for our annual holiday late in the month. In September we have another jam packed calendar of activities on offer. We will be returning to The Life Adventure Centre at Castlewellan Forest Park to take part in some of their outdoor pursuits. This was so much fun last year and we only have limited places so contact the office if you would like to get involved. In September we are delighted to be partnering up with Newry PIP s around positive mental health with their 5 Steps to Wellbeing Course. This will be run over three Thursdays in September and will provide a basic understanding of positive mental health for ourselves and others. This will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the fact that we all have mental health needs and staying mentally healthy requires both awareness and effort. In addition we will be continuing with our arts and crafts activities and getting some new items up for sale in our shop area. Traditionally September brings us some nice weather so hopefully the sun will make a welcome return and we can get out and about and get sitting out into our garden area. P A G E 5 Friday Night Drop-In sessions: Our Friday night sessions are a fun, social night for survivors, and their families as well as volunteers and supporters. This happens in our Newry Centre and is open from 8pm to 10.30pm. (Please note new time for Friday Night Drop In) Big Night Out: In August we enjoyed a lovely night out at The Whistledown Hotel in Warrenpoint which never disappoints. In September we are going to go along to A Night of Laughter which is the fundraising event happening in Dromintee on Friday 7th September. We will meet at the centre for food before it and then travel out to Dromintee for the show. Please let the office know if you would like to attend. Our second Big Night Out will be on Saturday 22nd where we will be going to Bravo Chinese at The Quays Newry for a bite to eat and then hopefully on to somewhere else for some music!

6 PAGE 6 SEPTEMBER 2018 South Down Coastal Tour 2018 Fundraising Event - Please Support Gullion Players present A Night of Laughter. They will be presenting two comedy plays Mother s Own and Mother s Own Flying High as well as musical entertainment from Fainne. This will take place in Dromintee GFC Marquee on Friday 7th September at 9pm. All proceeds will be in aid of Head Injury Support and the night is in memory of Peter Hughes. Tickets are 5 each and can be purchased from the Head Injury Support Office, for more information please call or michelle@headinjurysupport.org.uk Next meeting: Wednesday 12th 7pm This group meet in our Centre on Kildare Street, Newry on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 7pm - 9pm and we are happy to promote their services. It provides an opportunity for parents that have lost a child, at any age and through any means, to come together. The group is facilitated by a professional counsellor but no one that attends is under any pressure to talk publicity. 7 S E P T E M B E R P A G E 7 Heads Up: An exciting opportunity for carers with Head Injury Support. A day in October to look after yourself. Caring for Me will be a morning time session spent with 2 lovely trainers focusing on you as a person and what techniques would work for you to care for yourself, a lovely lunch and then some pampering in the afternoon. Suitable for men and women. Carers Club: In August our carers enjoyed a break away on our annual holiday to Westport. This proved an excellent opportunity for the carers from Newry to spend time with our carers from all our Outreach Groups. In September our Carers Club will be going to The Rostrevor Inn on Wednesday 19th September from 7pm for food and some music. Breast, Cervical & Bowel Screening: Learn More - Fear Less Carer s Trust are organising some awareness programmes around cancer screening. They are offering a 3 session programme which is designed to raise awareness of the importance of cancer screening by providing information which will encourage participants to avail of the screening services available. Programmes running on Wed 12th, 19th & 26th September in Ballybot House, Newry from 10.30am pm and on Fri 14th, 21st & 28th September in Banville Hotel, Banbridge from 10.30am pm. Promoting Good Dementia Care: The Alzheimer's Society and The Southern Health & Social Care Trust are organising a free carer education and support programme. The programme will run on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 8.30pm for 4 weeks starting on 4th September. The sessions will cover various topics including advice and practical support to allow for living independently, overview of services available for people with dementia and their carers, information and advice on legal matters such as Enduring Power of Attorney, advise on personal wellbeing, benefits and support and updates and developments in research. For more information or to book a place on this course please call Pauline Murphy on Asist Training - PIPS are hosting an Asist Training Workshop on Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th September from 9am - 5pm at An Riocht GAC in Kilkeel. These sessions will teach suicide first aid skills to anyone who may come into contact with a person at risk. This is an essential tool for all community caregivers and this is also very effective in challenging the stigma and taboo around suicide. This workshop aims to increase knowledge and confidence in responding to a person at risk. For more info or to book a place on this course please call Sarah on or sarah@pipshopeandsupport.org Safe Talk Suicide Alertness Programme - This is a new suicide alertness programme that teaches community members to recognise persons with thoughts of suicide and to connect them to suicide intervention resources. This free programme will take place on Wednesday 19th September from 10am - 1pm at Culloville Community Centre, Co. Armagh.
