1 AASW 70th Anniversary: WA Branch Film Festival... Social Work Through the Looking Glass 6 3 June 2016 Dear, From the Branch Manager's Desk The big news of the week, if not the Year, is the 2016 Social Worker of the Year Award Ceremony which was held on Monda May. On behalf of Sabina Leitmann, Branch President (who is currently en-route to the USA), I would like to express my appreciation and thanks to the dedicated volunteers, judges, event coordinators, partners and sponsors who made this year's a great success. Congratulations to all the finalists, and in particular Stephan Lund, the overall winner of the 2016 WA Social Worker of the Yea Award. Just a reminder regarding the 70th Anniversary Regional Funding, we have extended the deadline to the 15 June, and you find out more about this grant here. CPD: Last month we held a workshop with the Commissioner for the Victims of Crime, Ms Jennifer Hoffman, Dr Ann O'Neill an Verley from angelhands. The workshop focussed on the experience of victims of crime, and strategies to assist in their re process. IT'S NOT TO LATE TO REGISTER FOR THIS SEMINAR: 16 June 2016, Stories of Transformation, This workshop will provide an opportunity to explore social work and activism throug Buddhist teaching of suffering. In this space participants will delve into some of the philosophical teachings of yoga as well as modern day manifestations and research. Participants will be invited to consider moment-to-moment awareness in practice, as for reflective practice, as well as shifting the focus off the client to notice the growth of the social worker/self. 28 July 2016, Failure to Identify Child Sexual Abuse in Institutions: what we can learn from the Hear no Evil, See no Evil Repo the Royal Commission. This one day workshop, facilitated by Gail Green, will explore the findings from the Royal Commission Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse the impact on practitioner and agency practices, policies and accountability standards. This workshop provides an opportunity to start conceptualising, planning and taking action, for the inevitable chang service delivery when working with children and young people, and creating child safe organisations. 9 August 2016, AASW 70th Anniversary, Film Festival: Courageous Heart 2

3 The festival kicks of with the screening of the Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler (2009) on 9 August at Backlot Cinema. Doors open at 5.30 film will commence at 6.30pm. This Emmy award-winning film honours Polish social worker Irena Sendler, who was one of the most remarkable heroes of World War II, sa 2500 Jewish children during the German occupation of Poland. Working with a band of like minded compatriots and at great personal risk, s devised an extraordinary plan to smuggle children out of the Warsaw Ghetto under the noses of the Nazis. She found safe refuges for the ch and record the family history of each child in the hope that they would be reunited at the the War s end. She was eventually arrested, impriso and tortured but survived. In 2005 the IFSW at its 50th year celebration honoured Irena Sendler with the award of Most Distinguished Socia Worker' and in 2007 she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
