1 District 24-B BLUEPRINT FOR A STRONGER CLUB The theme of our International President, Joe Preston is Strengthen the Pride. Over the next few Beacon Articles that I write each month, I would like to focus on the different ways that YOU can Strengthen the Pride. I would like to begin with Lion Joe Preston s Blueprint for a stronger club. While some clubs struggle with membership, perhaps we ve noticed that we get new members but have a hard time keeping them. Every month, it seems that we drop more members than we induct. One way to find out why we are losing members is to ask departing members in an exit interview. Maybe more things are going on in the club than you are willing to admit. If we are truly serious about membership, maybe we should ask the members what they like, and what they don t like about the club. We might need to make some changes in the way we are doing things. If you examine the Club Operations section of the Blueprint, one of the concerns could be lack of attendance at meetings. If you survey your members, perhaps they might tell you: 1. The meeting is boring. 2. We never get anything done. 3. We used to have good programs. 4. Everybody ignores me, and I don t feel welcome. If they say any of these, perhaps it s time for a change in the way the meeting is run. As I look at the different District Committees, I see a wealth of talent serving as Committee Chairs, and just about all of them have volunteered to provide a program at a club meeting. You could select programs on everything from the Hearing Aid Bank, sight conservation, hearing research, and even membership or leadership. Our Committee Chairs are an excellent resource to provide interesting information to our members on a wide range of subjects. If you would like to request any of the District Committee Chairs to present a program, you can reach them by phone or using the information in the District Club Directory beginning on page 46. Next month I will talk about the Goal Setting component of the Blueprint. If you would like to view the Blueprint now and begin the process, you can click on the link below. If you decide to go through the Blueprint Processes, please make sure that it get reported on your monthly Service Activity report. REMEMBER MEMBERSHIP JUST ASK ONE! Lion Ray Mueller District Governor

2 Seotember 2014 Issue OUR VISIT AT LEADER DOGS FOR THE BLIND Early in the morning on August 8 th, Lion Jane and I arrived at the Leader Dogs for the Blind Headquarters located in Rochester Hills, Michigan. We were most excited to experience all the events that many of you had told us to expect. We did take the walk around the building blindfolded with leader dog Fiona, enjoyed the lunch of chili and large donuts, talked to puppy raisers and their puppies, and heard the amazing stories from blind individuals (all members of Lions Clubs) on how Leader Dogs for the Blind and the gift of a guide dog has empowered them with lifelong skills for independent travel. Leader Dog was founded by Lion club members in 1939 and has successfully trained more than 14,500 guide dog teams from countries all over the world. Hundreds of clients travel to their residential campus each year to receive training in guide dog technology, orientation and mobility programs. All programs are offered free of charge, including room and board and travel to and from campus within North America. Leader Dog is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that relies entirely on donations from individuals, foundations, corporations and service groups such as Lions Clubs in order to provide all programs free to clients. In celebration of Leader Dogs for the Blind s 75 th anniversary, and in support of their $14.5M Canine Development Center Project, Lions are undertaking a historic campaign. This Canine Development Center Project will create the ideal learning and living environment for the dogs which will make it possible to better serve their clients by providing the besttrained and highest quality guide dogs possible. This project will provide a renovated training and kennel area, a centralized veterinary clinic, an expanded puppy area, space for the dedicated campus volunteers to interact with the dogs, a new intake area, a new breeding area, and an enhanced welcome lobby. Leader Dogs for the Blind Facts: 14,500 guide dogs raised, trained and paired with a client since 1939; 1,000 volunteers, including puppy raisers; 275 clients who participate in Leader Dog s Life changing training programs each year; 4 clients who are Deaf-Blind paired with a guide dog each year; the only organization in the U.S. with GPS technology as a standard component of their guide training at $0 cost to clients. Amazing!! We enjoyed the day and thank all of you in the District for your support to Leader Dogs for the Blind. Please let me know if I can provide more information about this organization or the Canine Development Center Project. 3 Seotember 2014 Issue DO YOU HAVE AN ELEVATOR SPEECH? When I attended LLI, I got to participate in what I consider to be one of the most enlightening classes I have ever taken as a Lion; it was all about promoting Lionism. Past International Director, Wayne Davis was the instructor and he asked the class, Do you have an elevator speech? Some of you may ask, What is an elevator speech? The term itself is derived from the idea that if you engage in a conversation with someone in an elevator, you should make that conversation so interesting that the conversation will continue beyond that elevator ride. An elevator speech is based on the premise that you should be able to explain or promote an idea/person/organization/event/ etc. In the amount of time that it takes to ride an elevator. When you approach someone to explain what Lions do, or more importantly, about becoming a Lion, you immediately want to make the greatest impression possible. Most of us can explain what being a Lion is all about. You tell them we have meetings, fundraisers, and service projects. But being a Lion is about so much more. One of the problems that Lions have is not being able to brag about themselves. Often times we neglect to share our accomplishments. Your speech doesn t have to be consistently the same. Change it up to include whatever large project you are working on or just finished. Here are some items tht you could include in your elevator speech: Lions Club International is the largest service organization in the world. 100% of the money raised by Lions clubs goes to service projects or to helping those in need. Include a great experience you may have had working a project. One of my favorites is to describe LAMP and the feeling I got from helping pick out glasses for someone who hadn t been able to see clearly in a long time. Tell them about some of the great social events you hold. I love to tell people that, as Lions, we work hard but we also know how to play hard. Make sure they know how much the club gives back and does for the community. If you project how much joy and elation you experience being a Lion, they will get a better understanding of what a wonderful opportunity joining can provide. Don t forget to let them know that we are always looking for new members and that they are welcome to join the club. Next time you see me, ask me about my elevator speech. I will be more than happy to share it with you. Lion Heather Jones-Lancto 2nd Vice-District Governor 3

This simple gesture helped open up their lives by connecting them with friends and needed services, but what I got out of it was even better the satisfaction of making a difference in their lives. In every community, there are people like you and me who want to make a difference. Let s give them an opportunity to serve their communities as Lions. New members increase our ability to serve, ensure club health, and prepare clubs for success today and tomorrow. October is New Membership Growth Month, and I d like you to set a goal of adding new members to your club. It starts by asking one friend, one neighbor or one family member to join your club. If every member asks one person to join, I think you ll be amazed by the results. Be sure to give your recruiting a boost with Ask One! 8

The Lion who holds this office, your District Governor, was chosen because of his exceptional talents and dedication to Lionism. Accordingly, proper recognition and respect for the Lion who holds this office requires the careful attention of the clubs within the District. No one means to be inconsiderate and, certainly not rude, but sometimes under certain circumstances we lack the information to guarantee a smooth meeting. The following list of suggestions may prove helpful: Do not have any other programs during the District Governor s visit. The Governor is the program. Have a member (preferably a Past President) meet and entertain the Governor until dinner. It is a good practice to have all the Lions present to meet them. Be sure that the Governor is seated at the head table next to the President and to his/her right. Many times the Vice District Governor, Region and/or Zone Chairperson will accompany the Governor. In these cases, the President should introduce the officers and the highest ranking officer will then introduce the Governor. The District Governor is the ranking officer in each District and deserves the respect of the office. When introduced, the members should immediately rise and applaud and should do so again at the conclusion of the talk. The Governor should NOT be introduced at any time other than when he is to speak. In other words, his only introduction should be the last introduction, and that is when he is being introduced as the speaker. District Governor and Cabinet Secretary are usually treated as guests of the club, and are NOT expected to pay for their meals. Even though the District Governor will most certainly be a good sport, it is not considered good taste to have the Tail Twister bother them to excess. Remember that the Governor would like to meet with your entire Board of Directors. Try to have 100% attendance. Do not hesitate to discuss club problems with your District Governor. It is his job to help solve problems, give new ideas to clubs that have run out of ideas and maybe your club has ideas that will help others. Make the meeting with your District Governor a real down-to-earth get-together. 11
