Logic Models for Prevention Programming I Alexis Marbach, MPH, RYT 2
Initial thoughts about creating logic models If you can t see success, you can t reward it If you can t reward success, you might be rewarding failure By the end of our time together today, participants should be able to: IdenNfy and describe the value and unlity of creanng a logic model Define the main terms that facilitate the creanon of a logic model Establish connecnon between logic model, evaluanon tools, and measurable outcomes in scope of work 3
What is a logic model? Logic modeling offers an organized way of defining your program goals, services, and measurable outcomes by producing: An inventory of what you have and what you need to operate your program A strong case for how and why your program will produce desired results A method for program management and assessment Main Components 4
Why create a logic model? ProacHve planning tool to determine program feasibility Why create a logic model? Conscious process that creates an explicit understanding of the challenges ahead, the resources available, and the Nmetable in which to hit the target WK Kellogg 5
Charting the course Visual representanon that can be used by program staff, agency administranon and leadership, and funders Question Have you ever worked in an agency where you inherited a program/curricula without training on the program/ curricula origin, logic, theory of behavior change, and intended outcomes (aside from ending sexual violence)? 6
Era of Accountability Funders? Target Audience? Community? Staff? Board? But I have a Workplan! Logic model: Why the things you are doing will get you where you want to go Workplan: How you will get something done 7
Steps to creating a logic model Resources AcNviNes Outputs Outcomes Impact AssumpNons and External Factors Your planned work Resources AcNviNes Outputs Outcomes Impact AssumpNons and External Factors 8
Your intended results Resources AcNviNes Outputs Outcomes Impact AssumpNons and External Factors Community assessments and environmental scans Resources AcNviNes Outputs Outcomes Impact AssumpNons and External Factors 9
Internal agency assessments Resources AcNviNes Outputs Outcomes Impact AssumpNons and External Factors Where do I start? 1. Gather a team! A logic model is best designed when program managers and staff are all involved in the process 10
Determine the purpose of the logic model Who will use it? For what purpose? Set boundaries for the logic model How specific should it go? Who will the end users be and what boundaries would meet their needs? Left to right? Right to left? How do I read this thing!? Resources AcNviNes Outputs Outcomes Impact AssumpNons and External Factors 11
Timeline How long will it take to get from the lei to right side of your logic model? 12
TALK TO YOUR COMMUNITY!! Address assumptions 13
IF then Certain resources are needed to operate your program. If you have access to them, then you can use them to accomplish your planned acnvines. If you accomplish your planned acnvines, then, you will, it is hoped, deliver the amount of product and/or service that you intended. If you accomplish your planned acnvines to the extent intended, then your parncipants will benefit in specific ways. If these benefits to parncipants are achieved, then certain changes in organizanons, communines, or systems might occur under specified condinons. Identify external factors Surrounding environment that can affect program success posinvely or neganvely Can include polincs, program history, other ininanves exisnng in your agency and within the community, and social norms 14
Can be human, financial, organizanonal, or community assets Both needed AND available assets Identify resources Identify activities Processes, tools, events, technology, acnons that are an intennonal part of your program implementanon Used to bring about intended program change 15
Identify outputs Types, levels, and targets of service to be delivered by the program Your program widgets Identify outcomes Specific changes in program parncipants behavior, knowledge, skills, status, level of funcnoning Specific changes in community climate including 16
Identify impact Fundamental intended change occurring in organizanons/communines or systems as a result of program acnvines SMART Outcomes and Impacts should be SMART: Specific Measurable AcNon- oriented RealisNc Timed 17
Time to measure Relationship between logic models and evaluation Resources AcNviNes Outputs Outcomes Impact IMPROVE through process evaluanon 18
Relationship between logic models and evaluation Resources AcNviNes Outputs Outcomes Impact PROVE through outcome evaluanon In program implementation What is working? What is not working? How many acnvines, parncipants, and acnon items? Are parncipants sansfied? Are we being consistent in our measurement? 19
In program evaluation and strategic reporting Plan for next year Inform Stakeholders Capture a story of change IdenNfy challenges Share learnings Determine long- term feasibility Present successes Our journey 20
