Many Lions looked at each one and saw what you do in your clubs. The great comments from visiting dignitaries should make you proud of your accomplishments. We had a tie for best which were Region 4 Zone 1 and Region 4 Zone 2. Congratulations. A freelance reporter, Eric Beuning, for the Morrison County Record, contacted me about the Lions of Morrison County. He is writing an article on service organizations in Morrison County. He choose the Lions Clubs. He wanted to know all the clubs in the county. I gave him all the Clubs names and a contact in each club. I believe he was surprised on how many clubs there actually are. Is this a sign of keeping the Lions the best kept secret? We need to change so everyone knows who the Lions are. So look for this article coming soon. On February 23, the St. Cloud paper had pictures of the Cold Spring Lions giving awards to their members along with a picture of me giving my presentation to the Richmond and Cold Spring Lions Clubs. Thank you Cold Spring Lions Club for the publicity. Recently I published in my local paper on Who, How and What are the Lions. I had excellent response on this article. It seems very few people know who we really are. Please use this in your local papers. If you need an copy to put in your local paper, I ll be glad to send it to you. The following is the Article: Who, How, and What are the Lions? The who of a Lion is simple, they are fellow members of your local communities that volunteer to better the citizens in their communities and the surrounding areas. They are your neighbors who choose to help others of need, not themselves. How - what finances this Lions organization. We, as Lions members, finance each Lions Club through the dues that we pay. Dues pay for all the administration costs from the local level to the International level. No money from the public is used to benefit a Lions club or the Lions Organization.. All the money raised from the public must go back to the public. The events that each Lions club sponsors raises money that goes back to the citizens of the community or special charities that the Lions Club chooses to support. The International Lions Clubs organization recommends that 75% of the money raised locally, stays locally. For every $1.00 profit, $.75 returns to the community to support food shelves, fire victims, special needs at the public schools, swimming pools, hockey rinks, ball fields, parks and shelters, town celebrations and many more. But our main goal is to help people of need, especially children in each community. The other $.25 may be used to finance Lions sponsored charities such as Leader Dog for the Blind, Can Do Canines (service Dogs), Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation, Minnesota Lions Hearing Foundation, Minnesota Diabetes Foundation, Lions Club International Foundation and many more. What is the easy part. The letters of the word Lions defines a Lion. L is for Loving, I is for Individuals, O is Offering, N is for Needed, S is for Service All put together, Loving Individuals Offering Needed Service, that is the Lions organization. Thank you for your support of your local Lions Clubs and Lions Clubs International. Your continued support will further the efforts of your local Lions club. If you wish to be a part of this great organization of volunteers, contact a local Lions member and they will be glad to welcome you into the greatest service organization in the world. 2 Page 2 District Governor Elect Lion Ted Peterson Wow, it s March already! I m hoping each club will do officer elections this month. I see that Askov Area and Staples Host have reported their new club officers already. A BIG THANK YOU to those two clubs for being on the ball and getting it done. I attended the three zone meetings this past month in Belgrade, St. Cloud and Pine City. Eunice & I attended 5M-2 Mid-Winter Convention in Mankato, MN. I also did one webinar with Lions Clubs International about Project Management. I have also been busy gearing up for my year, working on the things I need for Officer Training in April. On February 28 th and March 1 st, I attended Area D GLT-GMT Goal Setting Workshop in the Twin Cities. On March 10 th, Eunice & I will be attending Multiple District 5M DGE Training in the Twin Cities for three days, finishing our weekend with a Council of Governors meeting. It will be the first time I (all the DGE s) get to sit at the table with the District Governors. The DGE s will be selecting next year s Council Chair on March 14 th, so I will be a part of thatprocess. Those district governors who want to seek the Council Chair position will indicate their interest and will go through an interview process with the DGE s asking the questions. The DGE s vote on the candidates and the one with a majority and most votes becomes the new Council Chair Elect. It s an exciting process knowing that you had a part in selecting the next Council Chair. As I mentioned above, Club Officer Training will be in April 7 th, 21 st, 28 th and May5th. Look in the newsletter for time and locations for your area. It s starting to hit me that in four months I will be the district governor. We need to keep moving forward with Governor Duane s goals for this year and finish the year out strong. March is Eye Donor awareness month. The following paragraph is a direct excerpt From LCI s February Newswire: The month of March is a special time to honor eye donors and their families for giving the gift of sight. Eye donations are crucial for research and education, as well as for corneal transplants that can help restore the sight of children and adults. Lions Eye Banks recover, evaluate, store and distribute human eye tissue for sight-saving procedures. Lions support more than 50 eye banks in eight countries. Recognize Eye Donor Awareness Month in March! Warm on March s heels, April follows, hopefully with soft spring rains to soak into the ground and partnered with warm sunshine for plants to wake up and bring forth beauty! Now is the time to start planning an environmental project. Brain storm projects with Club members, talk with City Hall about what you can do to help beautify your town. If there is more than one Lions Club in town, partner with them or another organization. If you have a Lions Park, plant some trees, shrubs, flowers. Nothing cheers the soul like natural beauty!! LCI is challenging Lions to protect our Environment for its fourth Centennial Global Action Campaigns to benefit 100 million people by December So put on those thinking caps, wander through magazines, plant catalogs, Home & Garden Shows, and come up with ideas to implement! Then form a committee. Select a service project that meets the community s needs. Have the Lions committee motivate Lions members and community members to get involved, and publicize the project. Implement the project, and have someone direct and choreograph the work on the day of the project. Make sure you report the activity to LCI also share your success and accomplishment in local media and social media. Go to LCI Centennial Service Challenge for a more comprehensive action plan. The Zone Service Activity Poster Contest was a great Idea! As we socialized in the pool area, it was great to see what other clubs throughout the District do for their Communities and District Programs such as True Friends. Remember to snap pictures, so easy today with the new phones or appoint a couple lions as Official Club Photographers media specialists! 6 Page 6 SPOT LIGHT ON: GLOBAL LEADERSHIP TEAM OR GLT Who are we, and what do we do? One of the biggest concerns that we hear from many Lions is the use of acronyms by Lions and Lions Clubs International. So, we will use the actual terms. The Global Leadership Team is responsible for many Lion activities. Some of these include providing OFFICER TRAINING Sessions throughout the District. The Officer Training Sessions offer and provide excellent information, ideas and how to, and responsibilities for presidents, secretaries, treasurers, and all Lions interested in these and other aspects of Lionism. They also provide opportunities for interaction with other clubs and Lions, as well as hands on training for secretaries. We encourage all Lions to attend and learn as much as possible about these leadership positions and Lionism. These session times and dates are located elsewhere in this Newsletter. We are also responsible for providing a training session for the District 5M8 Zone Chair Persons. This training is arranged with the District Governor Elect, Zone Chairs, and Leadership Team. This is usually done after the International Convention, and after all of the zone chairs have been selected. This session goes over the role, duties, responsibilities, and job descriptions for zone chairs. Another responsibility of the team is to provide orientation information about Lions Clubs at the International, Multiple District, District, Zone, and Club levels. All of the team members are available to provide orientation programs to our zones and clubs. All you have to do is ASK! We are available to assist Clubs with the Club Excellence Process. This program is a means to determine community needs, club members evaluate your local club, determine goals to improve your club, and how to accomplish these goals. The Club Excellence program has several versions that include the Pro Version. This involves a facilitator who is trained to assist clubs with the process. The Club Lite Session is similar to the Pro Version, but it does not require a facilitator. This version is a self-guided program from within your club. Both of these versions would provide your club with an acknowledgement patch upon completion from Lions Clubs International. Both versions do have some time concerns for the entire process. There is also a Blue Print for Strong Clubs Evaluation available. This version consists mainly of a club evaluation; however, you would not receive an acknowledgement patch from Lions Clubs International. More details are available from any team member. We also work with the Global Leadership Team. One of the other tasks that we have is to help identify future and potential leaders throughout our district. We gather information from clubs, zone chairs, Lions, personal observations, and relay this information to the District Governor and the District Governor Team. The Global Leadership Team consists of Past District Governor Frank Leidenfrost Coordinator, District Governor Duane Finger, District Governor Elect Ted Peterson, 1 st Vice District Governor Elect Judy Hoofnagle, Past Council Chair Jim Diehl, Lion Lori Steinemann, and Lion Joe Musel. Please do not hesitate to contact any of these team members to do a zone or club presentation. In a brief summary, these are most of the items that the Global Leadership Team is involved with. 8 Page 8 American Diabetes Association Alert Day Americans are urged to take the Diabetes Risk Test on American Diabetes Association Alert Day and to share it with everyone they care about to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. American Diabetes Association (ADA) Alert Day is a "wake up call" asking the American public to take the Diabetes Risk Test to find out if they are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. This year, during the Association s 75 th anniversary, Alert Day will kick off on Tuesday, March 24 and continue through Tuesday, April 21. The Diabetes Risk Test asks people to answer simple questions about their weight, age, family history and other potential risk factors for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Preventive tips are provided for everyone who takes the test, including encouraging those at high risk to talk with their health care provider, eating more healthfully and getting active. You can be part of the movement to Stop Diabetes! In addition to listening to great speakers on Saturday afternoon, in keeping with our motto, We Serve, you also have the opportunity to participate in a great service opportunity. We would like to remind you to please check with your District Diabetes Co-Chairs if your club or individual members are eligible for a Dream Catcher Award. A total of $1,000 in donations is needed to qualify for this award. Starting July 1, 2014, to qualify for a Dream Catcher Award, a club or individual must have accumulated $1,000 in donations to the MN Lions Diabetes Foundation, Inc. All accumulated donations for any diabetes contribution in the past are still eligible for qualifying for the Dream Catcher Award. There is no time limit for the accumulation of donations toward the award. CAN DO CANINES TAILS TO TELL TOUR Saturday, March 7 at 10 a.m. Tails to Tell Tours are a friendly, informal way to see what Can Do Canines is all about. You'll have a chance to see our training facility and meet a graduate, their assistance dog, as well as a puppy raiser and our staff. Tails to Tell sessions last exactly one hour. If you had a chance at the Mid-Winter Convention to look at my poster board, you saw the newsletters from three of the clubs in 5M8. I highlighted some of the wonderful things they do in their newsletters. Congratulations to the Duelm Area Lions for first place, St. Cloud Lions for second place and Sobieski Lions for third. Thank you to all the clubs that take the time to send me your newsletters. This helps to make my job easier by adding your information to share with the district. I did put together a pamphlet for the club newsletter chairs, but after my fall, I did not get the pamphlets out. I will the pamphlet to the club secretaries in hope they will pass it on to the newsletter chairs. If you don t have a club newsletter, please consider doing so as it helps in keeping your members informed and in the know. 13 Page 13 e-clubhouse Calendar Report Lion Jim Muellenbach (February 20, 2015) Thanks to everyone that attended our 5M8 Website and e-clubhouse Workshop on Saturday, February 7 at the 5M8 Mid-Winter Convention. It was great to see so much interest. Since last month, we now have 58 Clubs having activated e-clubhouse sites, up from 55 last month, with the addition of Grey Eagle-Burtrum Lions, Long Prairie Lions and Pine City Lions. Here are some links that you should find useful. The first is a link to take you to the sign in Page to make changes to your e- Clubhouse site. It also has links to all e-clubhouse sites in District. The second is a link to take you to the e-clubhouse application page IF you are not yet signed up for e-clubhouse. The third is the link to the new District 5M8 website. This should be very helpful to not only see what other Clubs are up to, but also you may get new ideas how to use e-clubhouse. Here is a recap of some of the topics we discussed at the workshop: Put your future events and plans on your Calendar for the entire year. Maintain the Calendar at least 13 months out. It doesn t matter that you don t know the exact date yet, enter the event and update as the event gets closer. It is an excellent place to send a prospect that wants to know what you do? Does a prospective member get a positive or negative feeling about your Club if they look at your Calendar and it is empty? Get into the habit of looking at other Club s Calendars. Simply use the links provided on the 5m8 website to easily find all e-clubhouse sites in the District. Announce your upcoming events on the District 5M8 Facebook page with links back to your e-clubhouse Website. Entering information on your e-clubhouse is not limited to your Club s administrator. Coming Soon! Multiple District 5M has access to Go to Meeting and will make it available to District 5M8. Using Go to Meeting, we can remotely show you step-by-step how to use e-clubhouse on your own screen!

15 Page 15 Dear Lions: The 37th Annual Lions Day with the United Nations (LDUN) will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2015, at the iconic United Nations Headquarters in New Your City. LDUN program highlights include presentations from President Preston and key UN speakers, along with engaging panel discussions focusing on this year s theme of Children in Need. Be amongst the first to find out and celebrate this year s winners of the International Peace Poster and Essay Contests. Inspiring and informative, LDUN recognizes the impact of LCI s volunteer efforts in supporting the shared vision with the UN of improving our local and global communities. LDUN attendees also have the option to attend the popular Lions-UN Luncheon inside the UN s signature Delegates Dining Room with invited ambassadors. Seating is limited and offered on a first come basis. For the first time we will be offering early registration material pick-up Friday, March 6, at the One UN New York Hotel, located directly across from the UN Headquarters, where attendees can conveniently pick up their event badges, program and more. Cash bars will be set for an afternoon hospitality from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm where you can meet and mingle with fellow attendees and staff at the Registration area. LDUN attendees will receive one complimentary drink ticket redeemable from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on March 6 only. For attendees that need hotel accommodations, the One UN New York Hotel has a limited number of guest rooms available at a special LDUN rate offered on a first come basis. Guest rooms can be requested when registering online.
